The rapidly growing needs for energy and their associatedenvironmental problems have led to the formation of mostchallenging issue facing human civilization. This has mas-sively signified the role of energy analysis and optimizationin a wide range of engineering disciplines. Further, the recentadvancement in manufacturing of small scale devices andintroduction of synthetic materials has added new dimen-sions to energy analysis. Historically, thermal energy analysisincluded first law investigations or heat transfer analyses.Over the last two decades, it was demonstrated that such anal-yses could be lacking and do not provide a complete picturefor many applications. Hence, combined first and second lawanalyses were conductedmostly on convective systems. Morerecently, the problems which chiefly involve conduction incomplex media, such as porous or multilayer media, startedto attract attention of the research community. This class ofproblems is essential in a number of applications includingenergy systems, energy storage, underground reservoirs, and micro- and nanoscale manufacturing. Optimization ofcombined conduction, convection, and radiation of heat andthe resultant generation of entropy in these applicationsintroduces a very rich and mostly unexplored problem.

This special issue brings about various problems in thesefields through comprehensive considerations. Editors hopethat provided problems and investigations help engineersand scientists regarding optimum thermophysical designingconditions for discussed systems.
