WHAT IS EDUCATION???

EDUCATION SOCIOLOGY Does not concern on what is right or

wrong, good or bad , positive or negative Ed.Socio concerns the state of education

and outcomes of certain policies

WHAT ARE POLICIES?

Policies are… Courses or principals of action that are

adopted or proposed by a government, party, business, organization or individuals

Name me some policies…

SOCIOLOGY AND EDUCATION

Sociologists study people in group situations Area of specialties:1. Studies of institutions in society2. Studies of processes3. Studies of interactions between individuals and groups

STUDIES OF INSTITUTIONS When talking about society, there are SIX (6) MAJOR institutions

that constitute subject areas in sociology1. Family2. Religion3. Education4. Politics5. Economics6. health

So, what about schools??? Schools are considered as formal & complex organizations These organizations are part of the institutional structures that

carry out the work of societies

STUDIES OF PROCESSES Defined as the action part of a society that brings the structures

alive Through the processes of socialization, people learn how to fit

into society and what roles are expected of them Process of stratification: determines where people fit into the

social structure and their resultant lifestyle Change: an ever-present process that constantly forces schools

and other organizations to adjust to new demands Education: takes place formally (in classrooms) and informally

(at home). Influences lives

The institution of education interacts with other institutions

Family institution & School institution How are they related? Education institutions and… Religion Social Political

Sociology of education… A field that is devoted to understanding

educational systems Questions range from teacher and

student interactions to large educational systems of countries

Via Ed.Socio, policies can be guided for schools

Goal of sociology of education To objectively consider educational

practices, sometimes controversial topics, and even unpopular beliefs to gain understanding of a system that affects us all.
