El indicativo • Sabemos y hemos estudiado el indicativo

• Yo camino = I am walking, I walk

• Tú hablas = you speak, you are speaking

• Nosotros vivimos = we live, we are living

• El/ella comió = s/he ate

El indicativo vs el subjuntivo• The indicative expresses:

• Certainty, knowledge, fact, reality

• The subjunctive expresses:

• Desires/wants, demands, suggestions, uncertainty/doubt, unreal things/ideas

• one person wanting, suggesting, or demanding that someone else do something

El subjuntivo• Still a bit confused?

• Don’t worry...everyone knows the subjunctive is a WEIRDO

• W = Wish (quiero que, espero que...)

• E = Emotion (temo que...)

• I = Impersonal expressions (es importante que...)

• R = Requests / Recommendation (recomiendo que...)

• D = Doubt / Denial (dudo que...)

• O = Obligation / Ojalá que

Frases importantes

•There are MANY phrases, but here are some common ones:

•esperar que to wish that ...•insistir en que ...to insist that ...

•mandar que ...to order that ...•**preferir que ...to prefer that ...

•prohibir que ...to prohibit that ...•**querer que ...to want that ...

•es aconsejable que ...it's advisable that ...•es necesario que ...it's necessary that ...

•**pedir que ...to ask that ...•**recomendar que ...to recommend that ...

•**sugerir que ...to suggest that ...

Frases importantes•Some common phrases that DO NOT require the subjunctive:

•Creer que... to believe that...

•no dudar que ...to not doubt that ...

•estar seguro que ...to be sure that ...

•no es dudoso que ...it is not doubtful that ...

•no hay duda que ...there is no doubt that ...

Conjugations! • It might be difficult to determine WHEN to use

the subjunctive...

• But it is EASY to form it!

• Remember how to make Ud. and Uds. command endings (mandatos)??

• It works the same way for the subjunctive!

• yo hable, tú hables, e/e/Ud. hable, nosotros hablemos, e/e/Uds. hablen

• Comer ==

• yo coma, tú comas, e/e/Ud. coma, nosotros comamos, e/e/Uds. coman

• Decir ==

• yo diga, tú digas, e/e/Ud. diga, nosotros digamos, e/e/Uds. digan

Conjugations!• Go to the YO

• Drop the -o

• Add the opposite ending

• Yes...it really is that simple!

• And you already know what to do with -Car, -Gar, -Zar!
