3. Summary of Water Ballast Tank Inspection Results
No. 1 Double Bottom Tank
Assessed as “Good” by Class. Minimal maintenance or repair carried out throughout the 15 years. Some
corrosion on underside of cargo holds caused by reverse impact damage but coating system still intact
and performing well in the immediate surrounding areas. Edges, weld seams and cut-outs in excellent
condition. Hopper tanks also in excellent condition, with only a few very minor areas of corrosion.
No. 4 Starboard Topside Tank
Assessed as “Fair” by Class. This is largely as a result of structural repairs required from stress areas,
rather than breakdown of the coating. Some general corrosion on the deckhead caused by highly
corrosive micro-environment and damages on the reverse side of work carried out on the main
deck. Some maintenance of coating system carried out in service using a (non-IP) solvent-free ballast
repair coating. Edges, weld seams and cut-outs generally in very good condition with some corrosion on
erection joint areas.
Forepeak Tank
Some general corrosion evident, particularly around tank access areas. Good corrosion protection in
complex areas with some localised breakdown on scallops, manual welds and mechanically damaged
edges.
4. Superintendent Comments
“The cleaning of the areas to reveal the true nature of the coatings beneath is impressive, as the casual
observer would consider the discolouration as staining of the coating”.
“The few inserts insisted upon by LR were as a result of stress and fatigue of the metal and not due to any
coating corrosion. In fact, the removed panels exhibited coating in good condition on both sides, which
was impressive given the aforementioned material fatigue”.
“My own opinion is that the main fabric of the TST’s is still well protected and edge failure around scallops
is to be expected”.
“The photos are representative of the tank conditions”.
