ENDOMETRIOSIS: AN OVERVIEW BY MONTGOMERY JOHNS, M.D.

One of the most common health conditions afflicting women worldwide is endometriosis, a disorder in which uterine tissue grows outside the uterus, usually elsewhere in the pelvic region. Endometriosis can cause severe pain and irregular bleeding and can also lead to infertility.

The most frequent symptom of endometriosis is pain in the pelvic region, often associated with menstruation, intercourse, or bowel movements. However, the amount of pain does not necessarily correspond to the extent of the condition: some women with mild endometriosis have severe pain and vice versa. A laparoscopic procedure is the only way to obtain a certain diagnosis of endometriosis.

ENDOMETRIOSIS: AN OVERVIEW BY MONTGOMERY JOHNS, M.D.

Treatment options for endometriosis depend on the severity of the condition and whether the woman plans to become pregnant. For mild to moderate cases, pain can be managed with over-the-counter pain relievers or supplemental hormone therapy, such as birth control. For those with severe cases or those who wish to become pregnant, laparoscopic surgery to remove the endometrial growths is an option. In very severe cases and as a last resort, a total hysterectomy (removal of both ovaries, the uterus, and the cervix) will extinguish all symptoms.
