• Wordplay: clever use of multiple meanings of words to express ambiguities

Homework• Following the style of “The Frog Prince,”

write your own poem based on a famous fairy tale or nursery rhyme. Try to give the original story a humorous twist while at the same time conveying an insight about life.

• Your poem should also mirror Smith’s use of diction/wordplay – 2 different words

“The Frog Prince” and “Not Waving But Drowning” by Stevie

summarize each stanza of Smith’s poems.

• Analyze Smith’s use of wordplay (next slide has directions)

Diction in Poetry-on separate paper• Skim “The Frog Prince” for the following

words: disenchantment and heavenly

• Skim “Not Waving But Drowning” for: far out and cold

• For each of the words you track, discuss the line(s) where they are used and how their meanings change throughout the poem.
