2009-10
enrichmentenhancing your studies & your CV
Sports & fitness...Fitness Suite Denise Cleal: dcc@cirencester.ac.uk Only £25 for your whole time at the college! After completing a short induction
session you can use the gym whenever convenient to you.
Ski Club/Team Chris James: chj@cirencester.ac.uk The ski team competes in various fixtures throughout the year and visits the ski
slope at Milton Keynes to train. Each year a ski trip is also arranged during the
Easter holiday which is open to all students who want to ski and have fun in a
wonderful outdoor environment.
Sports Leadership Academy Scott Chappell: sac@cirencester.ac.uk The Cirencester College Sports Leadership Academy is a new Academy that
started in September 2009. The aim of the Academy is to give those interested
in a career in Sports Coaching and Teaching the opportunity to increase their
knowledge, experience, skills and qualifications.
If you…= are enthusiastic about sport = have a desire to develop your skills and coach voluntarily = have an interest in coaching or teaching in the future…the Sports Leadership Academy could be for you!
Sports Teams Chris James: chj@cirencester.ac.uk Rugby (Men’s and Women’s), Football (Men’s and Women’s), Basketball, Netball,
Athletics and Badminton – all teams open to all students!
We’re also looking at setting up opportunities for students
to play golf and there may be more sports teams running
when you join the college depending on interest.
Out & about...Duke of Edinburgh Award Sarah Blackford: syb@cirencester.ac.ukThis is a great award that enhances any job application or
CV. As part of completing the qualification you will complete
volunteering, physical, skills and expedition sections over a period of time (the
length of time you do each section for depends on the level you choose).
Equestrian Society Angela Hughes: ajh@cirencester.ac.uk Organises horse forums (including links with an equine rescue centre in Spain)
and also opportunities for work experience and to join the Equine team.
Outdoor Activities Club Aiden Scott: acs@cirencester.ac.uk orStuart Williams: sxw@cirencester.ac.ukThis is a great society that incorporates a wide variety of activities from
kayaking to rock-climbing to fell-running. This year, organised trips will include
a Winter Mountain Walk (Cader Iris Challenge) and a Hadrian’s Wall Walk (for
five days over the Easter break).
Art, Music, Performance...Choir Pollyanne Strange: prs@cirencester.ac.uk The choir sings a variety of repertoire (from popular music and music from West
End shows to classical pieces) and performs in many concerts. A big project
for singers at the college at the moment is the ‘Last Night of Proms’ Concert
currently being organised.
Instrumental Lessons Gillian Eames: gxe@cirencester.ac.uk Currently Singing and Piano lessons are already running. There are Violin and
Drums teachers available and we are recruiting for Woodwind teachers for
next term. We will also be looking for other instrument teachers (e.g. Guitar
teachers) in the future.
Jazz Band CirenYouthBand@aol.comThe Big Band was originally set up by Cirencester College student Louis Murray
and Music/Saxophone teacher Sally Groves. Since then they have gone from
strength to strength and grappled with famous, and sometimes challenging,
signature pieces such as Glenn Miller’s “In the Mood” and “American Patrol”. The
band also organises performances such as playing at Cheltenham Jazz Festival.
Life Drawing Janet Parkinson: jmp@cirencester.ac.ukTake this opportunity to draw the human figure using a range of approaches
and materials.
Open Mic Nights Sarah Blackford: syb@cirencester.ac.ukA programme of Open Mic nights will be put in place soon
with the view of giving any student the chance to
perform: all styles of music, stand-up comedy, dance
or even small circus performances...
Orchestra Tim Cambray: Tim_cambray@hotmail.comThe orchestra currently performs one concert per
year at the end of the Easter term. However, their
big project for next year is the ‘Last Night of the Proms’
concert which is sure to be a fantastic event involving a large
percentage of the student community: if you are musical then
participation in some way in this event is essential!
Pottery Mitch Thompson: mjt@cirencester.ac.ukLearn about the art and craft of ceramics and how to develop your own ideas
within this medium.
Sundial Theatre Eric Richards: ejr@cirencester.ac.uk The Sundial Theatre at Cirencester College was opened in January 1998 as a
professional and community venue. The professional programme incorporates
drama from top touring companies, classical and folk music, lectures and
celebrity evenings.
Sundial Youth Theatre Danny Price: dcp@cirencester.ac.ukNo experience necessary – just enthusiasm! The group puts on one
performance (of a very high standard) each year.
Discussion...Christian Union James Bladon: james.bladon@hotmail.co.ukA willingness to discuss the big issues of today is the only criteria necessary for
joining the CU.
Debating Society Katie Broad: kxb@cirencester.ac.ukCirencester College Debating Team recently won the West and South Wales
finals of the Debating Matters competition in Cheltenham. They will now
go on to compete in the regional finals in Bristol. This is a great society and
participation looks particularly good on any university application.
Making a difference...Charity Events Sarah Blackford: syb@cirencester.ac.ukMany charity events are organised throughout the year so there will be ample
opportunity to get involved. Most recently the college organised a marathon
relay known as the ‘Annual Great Ethiopian Run’. The event was planned and
organized by students from Cirencester College and devised to combine
friendly but competitive running with raising awareness of the achievements of
Aspiration Hope club runners in Ethiopia, who, with poor nutrition, equipment
and training, produce times of international standards.
Student initiatives for charity events are also most welcome for example, later
this year one of our (female) students will be shaving her head to raise money
for the charity ‘Warchild’ and the student union plays a very active role in
raising money for many different causes.
Environmental Action Matt Reynolds: mxr@cirencester.ac.ukStudents within this society complete many different tasks on a weekly basis to
help the environment and they are planning various events to raise money for
related charities.
People & Planet Kevin Lister: kjl@cirencester.ac.ukIf you are concerned about the human impact on the planet, issues
surrounding climate change or how to reduce your carbon footprint (and help
encourage others to do the same) then this is the club for you.
Student Ambassadors Hannah Luffingham: hml@cirencester.ac.ukStudent Ambassadors... are brilliant! They are students who give up
their own time to come and help at events such as Freshers Day, Induction Days, Open Evenings, Choices Days etc. They wear
a red College T-Shirt so are easily recognised by the new students and are a friendly face to help signpost and
offer help and support to new visitors to the college.
Student Magazine Sarah Blackford: syb@cirencester.ac.ukThe magazine is entirely student run.
Content includes: opinions pages, reviews, college gossip,
problem pages and anything else relevant to student life!
The Student Union...student.union@cirencester.ac.ukThe Student Union Committee is responsible for = welfare of students= social and sports activities= charity/fundraising events = communication for and with students And is made up of democratically elected officers. If you want a say in how the
college is run then this is the society for you!
Special interest...Academies Weeks The Academies Team: academies@cirencester.ac.ukTwice a year, in Spring and Autumn, a programme of business events and lectures led by key business people are offered for all students on the Marketing, IT, Finance or Science Academy Programmes within the College. Individual and group activities for years one and two are arranged both in college and out in the corporate world so students gain more experience and exposure to the real work environment. Academy members are required to attend but where possible an invitation to attend will be extended to other interested students.
Historical & Archaeological Society (HACSOC)Aiden Scott: acs@cirencester.ac.ukHACSOC is open to anyone with an interest in history and/or archaeology.
Meetings are held throughout the term for this society and many exciting
events throughout the year, including talks by visiting speakers and
archaeological digs.
Job Shop The Academies Team: academies@cirencester.ac.ukThe job shop is an excellent way for students to search for part time, full time and apprenticeship vacancies. Accessed only by students at the College the job shop website holds many jobs aimed at 16 – 19 year olds, perfect if you are looking for work to fit in around your studies. Local employers advertise for free on our website which attracts some fantastic job opportunities. As a
student you will be given a password and login when you join college which will allow you to access this website
www.academyjobshop.co.uk.
Law Club Sarah Clough: shc@cirencester.ac.ukThis society is for anyone who wants to learn more
about the law. Recent trips have included attending a
talk by Michael Mansfield QC and various other visits to court
cases are planned.
Money Week Nicki Williams: njw@cirencester.ac.ukVicky Brandon: vab@cirencester.ac.ukAs part of our continuing drive towards providing financial capability for all we organise ‘Money Week’ in association with the National Skills Academy in Financial Services (NSAFS). Information and advice on all things financial is made available to students and is tailored to help them become more financially aware as they
enter into Higher Education or into the workplace.
Psychology Club Clare Smith: cas@cirencester.ac.uk
Kate Lawson: kll@cirencester.ac.uk The psychology club meets not only to discuss issues relevant to this field but
also organises many lectures.
Science Liam Nolan: lgn@cirencester.ac.uk Lectures by distinguished scientists are organised throughout the year: this
is a great society if you are considering doing science at university (including
medicine/veterinary/dentistry and engineering) or if you’d just like to find out
more about a certain area of science.
