We understand that making decisions about your post-16 choices, particularly now in such a competitive market place, can seem a very daunting process. It is the job of this prospectus to try and answer your questions.

Twenty years after Cirencester College first opened its doors to provide education and training opportunities to its respective communities, it was delighted to gain Sixth Form College designation. India Collins-Daviesformerly ofCommonweal School

Taken from Cirencester College Facebook page after India had picked up her A-level results on 16 August 2012:

“Feels amazing being able to write this... following today’s results, I will be going to Lady Margaret Hall, Oxford to study Classics and English this Autumn!

Excited beyond belief but I think coming in today made me realise quite how much I’m going to miss Ciren - no shadow of a doubt that I chose the best place for me to go to College and I am so grateful to everyone who’s helped me out over the last two years, however much or little. It speaks volumes when you can leave a place feeling excited and well prepared for the future but also shed a few tears at leaving it behind!”

India gained A*AAA in her A-levels results.

student unionThe Student Union is here for everyone, and you can all be part of it! We’re a collective body of students, whose job it is to make sure that your voice is heard! Our aim is to create a greater sense of unity at Cirencester College, by ensuring all students feel involved and up to date, as well as encouraging the growth of College spirit. And this means, of course, that all student contributions are welcome! We are here to listen to any questions or ideas you might have, so feel free to stop us for a quick chat, email us ([email protected]). You can even get in touch with us by liking our Facebook Page ‘Cirencester College Student Union’. Whatever it is, we will strive to make your college experience the best it possibly can be.

Besides having the amazing chance to help your fellow students, being on the Student Union gives you a range of opportunities for fun things to do, like working with the College Governors and fundraising for charities, like Help For Heroes. This year, we’ve also had a helping hand in design ideas for the planned refectory refurbishment! So, if you’re wondering how you can get involved, every year the College holds elections for the 8 places available. Any student can take part, campaigning for one of the spots and you can be as creative as you like to try and win votes. Any of this year’s members will be glad to give you their winning advice, or information on the different roles. Remember, it’s your time at College so don’t miss out on a great chance to make a difference! But whether you are on the Union or not, your ideas and opinions will always be taken into account, and you can have as much a part in College life as you want!

Welcome from the Student Union

Welcome to Parents

Jane SharpChair of GovernorsCirencester Sixth Form College

I would personally like to extend a warm welcome to all prospective parents and guardians to Cirencester Sixth Form College. Both as Chair of the Corporation but also perhaps just as relevant, as the parent of a current A2 student here, I would like to stress the importance that we place on the partnership between you, our students and the College.

Since becoming a Sixth Form College this year, one of our priorities has been to form a Parents Association, so that Parents have the opportunity to become more involved and to have a recognised voice within the College. We hope in this way we can continually improve this three-way partnership and at the same time enhance the overall experience of our students in the short time that they spend with us.

In our first year we will be particularly focusing on our communication with parents, with the use of small focus groups; and the creation of a Parents Association, which in turn will elect a new parent governor to the Corporation. In the future we hope to expand our work with parents by looking at other areas of interest, such as fund raising.

I look forward to meeting you at our forthcoming Open Days. If you would like to become more involved please email our principal Kim Clifford: [email protected].

Jane SharpChair of Governors

From one of our parents’ Dawn Porter. Dawn’s son Zack Grant (see page 21) was a student at Cirencester Sixth Form College from 2010 to 2012 leaving with A*A*A*A*A at A-level.

“Zack worked very hard but he was able to do this because he was interested in his courses and because he was encouraged and challenged by his teachers. Every course he took had great teachers, all the lessons were interesting and challenging and he thrived in the atmosphere his teachers created. His work has always been thoroughly marked and he was constantly pushed to improve. He originally intended to do 3 A2s but enjoyed all his subjects so much that he couldn’t bear to give any of them up. His greatest regret about the College is that he was only there for 2 years. All his teachers not only supported Zack but provided me with well prepared, clear and well thought out reports at Parents Evenings. Even though he was doing well he always had actions set out for further improvement. I don’t know if you realise how good, useful and well organised these events are compared to anything we experienced in schools. It is also really good having 2 a year. Everyone I spoke to was really professional and you could tell that they love what they are doing.”

In the future I hope to carry on as a professional linguist and also to keep learning whilst I work, ie a Diploma in translation from the Chartered Institute of Linguists as well as maybe adding another language to my repertoire! How did Cirencester College help you on your journey? My time at Cirencester allowed me to develop as a linguist and exposed me to a wide variety of media in each of the languages I studied. Consequently, when I arrived at university I was more than prepared for the level of work as well as being stoked up on enthusiasm for languages from my time at the College, something which always helps when it comes to doing a degree in a subject!

Welcome to your future!

Our well-established Career Academy programmes have been part of Cirencester College since 2004 and we now have Career Academies in Finance, Business, IT, Sport, Science & Technology and Heritage.

Academy programmes are employer driven, managed and influenced by active and enthusiastic Board members comprising both industry and academic representatives - focussed on raising aspirations and developing career awareness, enabling students to reach their full potential.

The student’s focus, commitment and motivation are key to their acceptance on to an Academy Programme.

Students gain a blend of work skills alongside their academic studies, giving them a very real choice of Higher Education study or a head start in embarking on a full-time career when they leave College.

Operating in conjunction with Career Academies UK, Cirencester College is the only local college to offer Academy programmes.

Course A-level Economics, Psychology, Business and BTEC Personal & Business FinanceEnrichmentYoung EnterpriseWhat benefits has the Academy brought? The Academy programme has provided me with direction and motivation to develop myself further and has encouraged me to do my best. Without it I would not be achieving as high as I am today! What advice would you give a future Academy student? It’s very easy to watch other people reach for the stars and achieve great things, and think ‘that will never be me!‘ Two years ago this was also me. But with sheer hard work and determination, you will be amazed at what you can achieve. Use every opportunity and experience as a platform for learning and make yourself even better. What’s your favourite lesson? My favourite lesson is my BTEC lesson as I enjoy the topics that I write assignments on and I have been given responsibility over my own work but the support is there whenever needed.Ambitions? In the future I would like to become CEO of a large corporation somewhere in the world. I can also see myself starting my own advisory business. I just want to keep challenging myself!

Sam Taylor

Sam Taylor who joined the Finance Academy two years ago epitomises everything that the Career Academy programme represents. He aspired to work in a professional business and was focussed on achieving his goal from day one. Making the most of every opportunity, Sam’s six week internship was spent at St James’s Place in Cirencester. Sam leaves Cirencester College in the Summer of 2012 to take up his post as a Business Trainee for Ernst and Young (one of only 10 students in the country). Sam graduated in May 2012 picking up the inaugural Sir Win Bishcoff Award for the most improved Careers Academy student in the UK!

Career Academies Employer FocusNikki Steed, Capita

Working for Capita on our Finance Academy Board, Nikki epitomises the perfect employer partner. Recognising the need for employers to bridge the gap between work and education, Capita have always been keen to support the Career Academy programme to ensure that our students meet the needs of employers as they progress into the workplace.

Nikki is also a dedicated Mentor working one-to-one with Academy students.

The ‘jewel in the crown’ for most Academy students is the summer

internship, usually consisting of a four to six weeks paid role where the student really gets a feel of the workplace and develops essential employability skills. It also gives the employers the opportunity to identify possible future employees, whilst clearly it is also just the ‘right thing to do’.

Finally, it was no surprise to us (although possibly to Nikki) that she received the Academy Employer of the Year Award (see below) this summer in recognition of her personal dedication and Capita’s commitment to the Cirencester College Career Academy programme.

Apprenticeships are an excellent opportunity to gain a career, with real training whilst you are earning - combining a programme of work-based skills at your place of work alongside a day-release academic course at College.

At Cirencester College there are three levels of apprenticeship available; Intermediate, Advanced and Higher. For Intermediate and Advanced, we do apprenticeships in the following areas:

Apprenticeships

A wide range of Higher Apprenticeships are currently being launched, more information will be available on our website alongside our current vacancies. To view them use the QR code (right) on your smartphone or go to our websitewww.cirencester.ac.uk/apprenticeships.

Welcome to your future!

What advice would you give to anyone who is considering an apprenticeship?Make sure you balance your job with your college studies. Keep up with the college work so that you don’t get behind. Remember to be enthusiastic. Apply for as many positions as you can to make sure you get an apprenticeship place. One of my best moments was receiving my first pay from work! Also, I liked completing my first NVQ unit and mixing with other apprentices during my day release - great for sharing experiences. My assessor was really supportive and encouraged me through the programme. I wanted to work quickly through my units and she helped me to do this by setting some useful aims which suited my speed of working.Ambitions? To do the higher apprenticeship when it is available. To take more opportunities for learning as they arise and eventually to become a manager or owner of a nursery.

You are also getting your foot in the door with a job giving you great experience. The teaching is excellent! If you stay on top of your work it’s easy to get done as you work in small groups so you can get all the help you need!Ambitions? To continue in the job role I hold currently, but get more experience and a wider job role, in the future.

SchoolChurchfields SchoolCourses taken at Cirencester College Level 3: BTEC Diploma Uniformed Public Services; AS Law; A Level Applied ICT, General Studies; GCSE Spanish ab initio; University Level Courses: FdA Criminology and Criminal Justice (2009/2011); Final top up year : BA Criminology at the University of West of England, Bristol (UWE) (2011/12).Why choose a Foundation Degree? The flexibility of it, I was able to continue working full time and work towards a degree at the same time. I also liked the emphasis on work based learning which allowed me to gain relevant work experience that looks great on CVs. What about a work placement? In my 1st year I had a voluntary role with Wiltshire Police and in my 2nd year I was lucky enough to spend a week with the Crown Prosecution Service. Would you advise other students to stay on at College to study a university level course? It’s great for those wanting to save money on university accommodation and living expenses. You can work whilst learning and gain valuable experience in the industry. Classes are small which means that lecturers can offer more support. Just work hard and make the most of it!Ambitions?I am going to travel through Asia and New Zealand before spending a year working in Australia. When I (eventually) return I hope to join the police and work my way up through the ranks. Having this degree should help with that!

In Summer 2013, Cirencester College will be hosting places for young people looking for adventure, fun and achievement.

NCS is a summer programme of activities and challenges for 16 year olds that will support them to develop the skills and attitudes they need to be more engaged with their communities and become active and responsible young people. It is a challenging and enjoyable opportunity for young people to gain new skills, meet people they would not normally meet, and work together for the benefit of their communities. It supports young people to realise their potential and prepare for adult life.

2013 will be the third year of the Government-backed NCS programme and thousands of young people have already participated in 2011 and 2012. Feedback from young people who have participated in NCS summer events tells a fantastic story:

“It gives you confidence and challenges you in different ways. You feel proud of yourself afterwards.”

National Citizen ServiceNCS Summer Challenge 2013

“I would tell anyone thinking of doing it to just do it. You learn new skills, it’s good for your CV and you make friends you’ll stay in touch with forever.”

“It’s been great. The people are friendly and the activities are brilliant. We’ve been canoeing, expedition walking, camping and rock climbing, which are helping me develop team building skills which will help me later on in a job.”

In 2013 there will be up to 60,000 places available across England (over 50 places in Cirencester and surrounding area) and the programme will be open to many more young people in future years.

If you are in Year 11 now and you would like to find out more about NCS, please contact the NCS team at our Tetbury site on 01666 505 833 or e-mail [email protected].
