Why do so many students join Cirencester College?

Rachel Uzzell (pictured right) joined Cirencester College a year ago from Highworth Warneford School to take AS levels in German, History, English Language and Law. In her own words she tells us why she joined Cirencester College.

“Students like myself who want to continue with their studies will usually come to Cirencester College; these are a few of the reasons why I chose Cirencester:

n First of all the exam results are very good compared to other colleges and schools.

n The pastoral care that is offered at Cirencester allows me to feel like the lecturers do care about me, my education and my future.

n Lessons are more enjoyable because the lecturers are specialists in their field and are able to talk more around the subject and teach beyond the syllabus.

n Having an enrichment afternoon gives all students the opportunity to join clubs, next year I intend to get involved with the law club and debating societies.

When I finish at Cirencester it is my ambition to study Law with German at university and to go and on and qualify as a barrister.”

Neil Ash (pictured right) joined Cirencester College a year ago from Bradon Forest School to take AS levels in Biology, Geography, Maths and Physics. Neil explains why he thinks Cirencester College is special.

“I chose to study at Cirencester College as it has a fantastic reputation and high academic standards. In addition to this, I like the friendly, open atmosphere and the green space available due to the College’s location. As well as this, there are many good facilities available such as the library, the science labs and private study areas.

Staff at the College are friendly and passionate about your learning and have great enthusiasm for your subjects, thus enabling you to acquire an interesting and high quality education. There is plenty of opportunity to be independent and take control over your education, exploring your own views and ideas using the knowledge you have gained in lectures.

I became a student ambassador and have helped out at numerous open evenings which allows you to give something valuable back to the College.

After Cirencester I intend to do a degree in Geography before applying to the RAF, or a civil aviation school, to train to become a pilot which has always been my ambition.”

This is what our students say!

Fred MacDonald (pictured right) joined Cirencester College 3 years ago from Deer Park School. Fred completed some level 2 courses before progressing to the BTEC Extended National Diploma in Media.

“Cirencester College is responsible for really giving me a purpose and a clear vision of what I ultimately want to do!

I found a course, the BTEC Extended National Diploma in Media, which I could really enjoy, express my creativity and make a future with!

Since I have been at Cirencester I have had the opportunity to network with industry professionals which has given me an invaluable feel for working in the industry.

Making 2 brilliant films has already helped me fulfil part of my ambition to have a long career in making movies!

In five years time I hope that ambition will be fulfilled with a job as a writer or researcher for a company like the BBC. In the meantime there is a lot of work for me to get there but I’m really looking forward to it!”

Fred gained a triple distinction in his BTEC Media and is now going on to Glamorgan to study Film and Video.

Students of both vocational and A-level courses can now continue on to Higher Education at Cirencester College. This could become a popular choice for students facing high fees at university.

Aaran Judson (pictured right) left Cirencester College in 2009 with a triple distinction in Countryside and Management.

His ambition was to continue his education at the Royal Agricultural College in Cirencester and ultimately find a career in the countryside industry.

“The Extended Diploma in Countryside Management at Cirencester College covered everything I was interested in.

So moving on to the Foundation Degree in Environmental Conservation and Heritage Management, from the College to the Royal Agricultural College, for me was a natural progression in my education.

One of the main benefits for me in taking this next step was that I would be taught by some of the same lecturers I had at College. I learn from their enthusiasm for the subjects and the countryside.

I have very much enjoyed my time at both institutions. I have just finished the two year foundation degree and will now complete a third year to gain my BSc (Hons) in Countryside Management. When I have finished my final year, I should have the ability to specialise in any aspect of the skills which I have gained over the last five years, hopefully then I will realise my ambition to have a long and successful career in Countryside Management!”

Nadia Iqbalex Nova Hreod SchoolNadia has just finished her first year in the Business Academy taking AS-levels in Business Studies, Photography, Psychology, Textiles and she also takes part in Young Enterprise.

“I wanted to join the Business Academy because it meant I wasn’t just learning the theory I was actually putting it into practice! It also means that I have a business mentor; sharing experiences with someone else has helped me consider the possibilities that may be open to me in the future.

In the summer I completed an internship placement, which has been a valuable and unforgettable experience. My colleagues were extremely welcoming and supportive and I was allowed to flourish in my role knowing that my colleagues were always there for me to fall back on. I’ve been exposed to all different types of work during my internship and it has been most productive and thoroughly enjoyable.

Being part of the Business Academy also meant that I went on a residential trip to London which was a fantastic opportunity to gain experience of real working and a better understanding of the world of business.

I have enjoyed the support you get in the Academies but also I have enjoyed the independence too. Cirencester College is helping me to prepare for the future whether it is university or going straight into a career. In the future I hope to be part of a successful business!”

Career AcademiesOur well-established Career Academy programmes have been part of Cirencester College since 2004 and we now have Career Academies in Finance, Business, IT, Science & Technology, Heritage and also in Sports.

Academy programmes are employer driven, managed and influenced by active and enthusiastic Board members comprising both industry and academic representatives - focussed on raising aspirations and developing career awareness, enabling students to reach their full potential.

The student’s focus, commitment and motivation are key to their acceptance onto an Academy Programme. Students gain a blend of work skills alongside their academic studies, giving them a very real choice of Higher Education study or a head start in embarking on a full-time career when they leave College.

Operating in conjunction with Career Academies UK, Cirencester College is the only local college to offer Academy programmes.

“The Finance Academy provided me with numerous opportunities to network and build what turned out to be vital contacts within the Financial Services Industry.

These contacts, coupled with the frequent visits to the working environment and an internship at St James’s Place Wealth Management in Cirencester, helped to make the transition from education into a career much easier.

Since graduating from the Academy programme I have gone on to study at university and now work full-time at St James’s Place. I have kept in touch with those contacts gained from the Academy experience and will continue to build upon these as I look for further development in my career.”

Apprenticeships

Josh Brownex Highworth Warneford SchoolBusiness and Administration Level 3 Apprentice

“My ambition when I left College last year was to get a full time job, which is why I looked at doing an apprenticeship as it gives you employment as well as a qualification. This means you are being paid to learn and attending College once a week is a great change from work.

I am working at Rest Express, based in Perrotts Brook; it is a small company of 10 workers who are stockists and distributors of wood finishing products and materials.

We are set coursework on our course that we need to complete in College time and at home.

With the skills that I am gaining both in College and in the workplace, my ambition for the future is to become a manager in a company.”

Apprenticeships are an excellent opportunity to gain a career, with real training whilst you are earning - combining a programme of work-based skills at your place of work alongside a day-release academic course at College. Most of the Apprenticeship takes place in the workplace where you will work and be assessed alongside experienced staff to gain the skills and experience the business needs. In addition to this workplace based training you will study at Cirencester College on a day release basis.

There are three levels of Apprenticeship available at Cirencester College:

and 24 months GCSEs and equivalent qualifications may

James has just finished his NVQ Level 2 in Childcare. He has now taken up an Level 3 Childcare Apprenticeship in the College’s BrightEyes Nursery.

“I chose Cirencester College because their whole ethos is to learn. This is why I think I have had so much support and such a good education here.

In addition to my course I have learnt so many life skills. I also learnt a great deal on my placement such as feeding babies, and putting them down to sleep and importantly team work.

When I started College my ambition was to become a paediatric nurse but my ambitions have completely changed now that I have taken on an apprenticeship in Childcare.

At some time in the future I would like to become an entertainment rep for children and travel all around the world!”

Fund raising

Staff and students at Cirencester College are members of local, national and international communities; we encourage and support one another in developing our understanding of those communities, and in taking up our responsibilities as both local and global citizens through academic work, enrichment activities, volunteering and fund raising.

Links with Kigulu and Kenton Schools in Nairobi, and a group of Ethiopian runners in Addis Ababa, are the inspiration for 2 key fundraising highlights of the year.

Kibera Week raises awareness of issues of aid, development and global responsibility, and raises funds to support Kigulu, a refuge and school for AIDS orphans in the slums.

Staff and students raised over £2,000 in 2010/11: cakes were baked and sold; legs waxed for charity; games were played for entrance fees; a bring and buy sale held; Kibera lunches made and consumed; there was busking, dressing up, 'Three Wise Monkeys', a lecture on British Colonialism and Kenya; and a wide range of lessons and tutorials devoted to the week's themes.

The Annual Great Ethiopian run seeks to raise awareness of the plight of talented runners, and funds to provide trainers, by challenging staff and students to better the half marathon times achieved by the Ethiopians.

The Student Union, student groups and individual students each year organise events and activities for the causes they support: Stop the Traffik, climate change, green issues, animal sanctuaries, the Armistice Day Walk, to name but a few.

Our new Parents’ and Friends’ Association, shortly to be launched, will bring charity nearer to home. Since government plans to reduce spending have resulted in the postponement of our new sports hall/ classroom build we will have to find other sources of funding to meet our aspirations for the development of the College and we hope parents will want to support us

I participate in Outdoor Activity club; we have been rock climbing and kayaking, great for building your strength, meeting people and the instructors are a good laugh!”Zack has just finished his AS-levels in History, English Language and Literature, Politics, World Development and General Studies gaining AAAAA.
