Additional Learning SupportCirencester College actively welcomes students with a wide range of abilities, specific learning difficulties and disabilities. Wherever possible we adjust to, and cater for, your needs including access to buildings.
All students are screened to assess their individual learning needs and whether extra support is needed to help them through their studies. This may be given in a variety of different ways from class support to one to one tuition.
We provide a comprehensive range of support for:l students who have specific
learning difficulties eg dyslexia, dyspraxia, Aspergers
l students who have a physical/sensory impairment eg visual or hearing impairment or other physical support needs
l students who feel, or whose teachers feel, they need some extra support
l students who have had previous exam dispensations/exam access arrangements or support in their school.
CounsellingStudents can access free one-to-one confidential counselling on a short term basis. The Counselling Service enables students to explore and understand issues, be they personal, family or college related, that are impacting negatively on their ability to gain the most from their time at College. The students are then supported to make any changes they decide are necessary.
Cirencester College OnlineCCO is the College’s intranet where students can access all kinds of information ranging from careers and higher education to
College policies. Students can get involved in polls, learner surveys and discussion forums, keep up with College events and submit articles, the best of which will be published on our website. CCO is also the home of our Moodle VLE (virtual learning environment) where students can find useful course materials and take up the option of submitting homework online.

Student SupportProviding excellent pastoral care for each and every student lies at the heart of Cirencester College’s mission. You will have your own personal tutor who will get to know and support you throughout your time at College. They will be responsible for ensuring that your programme of studies meets your needs and will monitor your progress and attendance at the College. Careers AdviceAll students are entitled to Careers Advice during their time at College. A careers appointment is not just about jobs; it is tailored to the individual and can help students decide on higher education options, taking a gap year and any future plans. Careers Advice at the College is delivered impartially in partnership with Connexions.

Richard joined Cirencester College in September 2008 to take Maths and Computing; throughout his time at College Richard has used the services of the academic support team.

Oxbridge, or who are applying for competitive courses, we offer a special programme of support. This includes philosophy, critical thinking, interview techniques and a series of visits to universities.
Science Career GroupThis is for students who have a clear focus on a career in science such as medicine, veterinary, engineering or other specialist scientific disciplines. The group aims to broaden and deepen scientific understanding in order to ensure students are well prepared for applying for their chosen course. This will involve a wide range of curriculum based study and extra-curricular enrichment.
This programme offers the added opportunity of working closely with the Science Academy, giving access to a mentoring, internships and various visits, lectures and discussions.
Futures Day, Higher Education Advice and University VisitsOur programme of advice and guidance concerning Careers and University choices begins in earnest in the February of the first year. The main event is Futures
Day in June featuring over 100 talks and workshops on a wide range of subjects. Students learn how the decision making and application process works. Guest speakers come from a range of local and national universities, professional associations and employers, and students are able to pose their own questions. Students regularly rate this the most helpful single event in their decisions about what to go on to when they leave College.
Financial SupportThe College has experienced advisers who can provide support through the EMA process, welfare benefits, accommodation issues etc. The College also has some funds available to help those families on low incomes.

2 The Schools Liaison Team Our team of guidance staff visits most of
our partner schools in the area to offer information and guidance. This is an opportunity for you to find out more about Cirencester College and to ask questions.
3 Choices Day This is the nearest thing to a real College day;
you can try up to five subjects and experience the atmosphere at Cirencester (a great help in making those important choices). Our partner schools in Gloucestershire and Wiltshire will organise this for you (see page 3), but if your school is not involved please contact the Admissions Officer at the College for details.
4 Applications We start taking applications from 17 October 2009. You can apply online at
www.cirencester.ac.uk or you can download our enrolment form or collect a form from your school or the College. There is also a form in the back of this prospectus.
5 Application Deadline As Cirencester College has been
oversubscribed for the past few years we strongly recommend that you apply as soon as possible after that date to avoid disappointment. We can only guarantee your place if you apply before 5 March 2010 (and you meet our entry requirements).
6 Interviews Once we receive your application form we will
send you a date for your interview. If you have not heard from us within 2 weeks of applying please contact the Admissions Office.
Interviews will start from 2 November 2009. One of our expert team of admissions staff will interview you and will give you impartial advice on choosing the right course. This is also an opportunity to discuss any extra support requirements that you may have.
You will usually receive a conditional offer which is subject to your exam results and a satisfactory reference.
steps to becoming a student at Cirencester College7 Freshers’ Day You will be invited to Freshers’ Day, where
new students to the College come to celebrate the end of GCSEs and meet their tutor group. We have music and a Fresher Fair with all our clubs and sports teams represented. It’s a great chance to meet your fellow students.
8 Enrolment After Freshers' Day you will be invited in
on a day in August to enrol officially at Cirencester College; you will have your results checked on this day and your course finalised. If you do not get the grades you expected, we still would like you to come to your appointment, as this is an opportunity to review your programme of study with a member of the Admissions Team.
9 Induction Before the beginning of term you will be
invited to Induction where again you will meet fellow students. You will also be given your timetable and visit your classes.

facilitiesLibrary, IT facilities and Learning Resource CentresThe College library has over 11,000 course text books as well as holding recreational books, periodicals, newspapers, maps, videos and dvds which you can browse through or borrow. The library also has its own quiet study areas. There are IT drop-in suites available in all areas of the College as well as three Learning Resource Centres; these are supervised quiet areas where students are able to use the computers which have internet access and printing facilities.
TastebudsTastebuds is our refectory and offers a range of catering facilities from 8.30 in the morning, whether it is a hot meal, the Salad Bar, or a light snack from our ‘Grab and Go’ Shop.
Reprographics and Stationery ShopOur reprographics department will see to all your photocopying needs. They also run a shop which is fully equipped with cards, stationery, pens, art and textile materials and equipment at affordable prices.
Inspire Our swiss style chalet shop, run by our entry level students, sells snacks and hand made craft and seasonal items.
Early Years CentreThe BrightEyes Early Years Centre offers high quality childcare for babies from 3 months to pre-school.
Open all year round, it meets the needs of students, working parents and offers those studying childcare work placements.
Sundial TheatreThe College Theatre has established itself as a lively venue for both professional and student events, with many sell-out performances. Watch out for top touring companies and special offers for students.
Tranquillity Beauty SalonStudents can indulge themselves at very little cost in the latest beauty treatments. Appointments can be made for a variety of relaxing or revitalising treatments at Tranquillity reception in Cirencester.
Fitness Suite For the fitness enthusiast membership to the fitness suite is very reasonable and includes a fitness assessment on joining.
Media and Photography SuitesThe purpose built Media facilities offer a wide range of video, data and interactive media equipment including four suites of Apple Mac workstations.
Language LaboratoryWe have a 16 station language laboratory which students use for at least one hour per week. This facility allows language learners to work at their own pace while improving their listening skills.
Science LaboratoriesStudents and staff continue to enjoy our new state of the art labs. Theory is taught in classrooms then students move into the open plan labs for practicals alongside other groups. Chemistry, Biology and Applied Science all working together creates a great atmosphere in this large airy well-equipped practical space.
Smoke-Free CollegeCirencester has declared all college sites completely smoke free. Smokers are not permitted to smoke on site. This ban extends to college entrances, the college perimeter and land adjacent to college sites. This ensures that smokers do not cause nuisance to our neighbours or visitors to the site. For those wishing to give up support sessions are available.

“Although I live in Swindon, Cirencester was my first choice because of its academic reputation as well as the really friendly atmosphere.Lecturers are always willing to devote their spare time to helping in areas you may find difficult. They are really enthusiastic about the subjects they teach.Last year I joined the Netball Academy. This was a great opportunity and a lot of fun as there was a great team spirit.After my A-levels I would like to go to university and study either Law or English Literature.”

“I came to the Open Evening to explore my options; after half an hour I knew that this was where I wanted to be. The atmosphere was infectious. I went home bouncing and impatient for next year to begin!
The teaching is very different to school. The lecturers help students to relax around them and feel more confident to express their own opinion. They are eager to help and willing to give up their own time for some one-to-one tuition. The support is never-ending; guidance tutors, counsellors, your own personal tutor and they are all eager to help at any time, college related or not! It is easy to make friends. There are a lot of different spaces to socialise and grab some food when you need it.
I hope to go to a top university to study maths and then explore the exciting new career paths this will lead me down!”

A-level student Louis Gilbert wanted to pursue his interests both in rugby and dance.
"I had been playing rugby for about 10 years and dancing for just over 7 years, but I enjoyed them both so much I couldn’t see why I couldn’t do both. Being at Cirencester has allowed me to do so. The two complement each other; you need to be physically fit to do both, and the flexibility helps my rugby.
Coming to Cirencester was definitely the right decision for me; you are treated as an adult, lecturers are enthusiastic for their subjects. You are taught how to be independent and mature."Louis hopes to follow his interest in dance when he leaves Cirencester by auditioning for dance schools.
Louis is studying A-level History, Drama and Theatre Studies alongside a BTEC National Award in Sports Development and Fitness.

A-levels are academic qualifications which are divided into two years of study. In your first year you will study AS-levels and in your second year you will study for your A2s. If you successfully complete both levels you are awarded the full A-level.
A-levels are available in over 50 subjects and timetabled for 5 hours teaching per week.
1st year AS-levelsl are usually combined with other AS-levels in
a programme of 4 or 5 subjects, or with the first year of a National Award, Certificate or Diploma and with qualifications in key skills,
l suitable for students who expect GCSE passes at A*, A, B or C,
l mainly assessed through end of year exams with some assessed coursework.
2nd year A2sl suitable for students who achieve at least
a grade D at AS-level, and who wish to concentrate on three or four A-levels in the second year,
l usually combined with other A2-levels or AS-levels in a programme of 3 or 4 subjects, or with the second year of a National Award, Certificate or Diploma,

Qualifications include:

These are widely recognised courses assessed through coursework and assignments and are excellent preparation for both university and employment.
BTEC National Diplomas are 18 unit programmes equivalent to three A-levels. National Certificates are 12 unit programmes equivalent to two A-levels and the Award is a 6 unit programme is equivalent to one A-level. The BTEC First Diplomas are studied over one year and are equivalent to 4 GCSEs at grade C.
National Certificates and Awards can be combined with an A-level programme.

XinmeiWangA-level student Xinmei has a place at Cambridge University to study Economics.
"I really feel I was prepared well when I applied to Cambridge. As part of the High Achievers Group we were tutored through the Oxbridge application process which is slightly different to other universities. We were also given mock interviews with feedback and talks and presentations.
I chose Cirencester because of its strong academic reputation. You are taught independent study skills, but if I am struggling the lecturers are always able to help.
In Physics we visited the Rutherford Appleton studios; I enjoyed the expertise of Dr Brian Cox on the large Hadron Collider.
I have really enjoyed my time at Cirencester; it has a really friendly atmosphere. You will meet lots of new friends and the lecturers will never leave you alone, they will always give you assistance and a push in the right direction!"

DalrajBahiaAS-level student Dalraj joined Cirencester College from Kingsdown School, Swindon.
"I liked the feel of the College when I visited on Open Evening, it seemed such a friendly and lively place to study.
The lecturers at Cirencester are so different, you can tell they really care about your progress in a course. They are also wholly prepared to help you outside of timetabled lessons and with the extra support with materials such as past papers on the intranet. These are unbelievably useful when it comes to independent study, which is an important part of studying at College.
I chose to study at Cirencester as they offered an accelerated Maths course that would allow me to complete my Maths A-level in one year and then Further Maths A-level in the second year. This was really important for me as I would like to study Maths at University.”
Dalraj gained four grade As in his AS-levels in the Summer of 2009. He will now be continuing in to his second year of A-levels.

Kalan-MaiWaiteKalan-Mai needed a programme of study which enabled her to continue with her challenging training schedule for rowing which has seen her gain international honours.
Kalan is studying the Sports Exercise and Science National Diploma.
“In total I have to cover 130 km a week as well as weights, circuit training, pilates and core stability. I do get a Friday off from training!
My studies have helped me with my diet by educating me to eat specific food types and in sports psychology I have learnt how to focus more when I am competing.”
Kalan is competing with Great Britain’s Womens Junior 18 rowing squad. She hopes this will lead to her competing in the Junior World Championships in the summers of 2009 and 2010.
"I hope to go to university to study Sport and Exercise Science and then hopefully get a job within Sport England so that I can work with top athletes. My ultimate dream would be to be rowing for GB in the 2016 Olympics."

Ed Alderman formerly of Kingshill School
When Ed Alderman first joined Cirencester College, he embarked on a course of A-levels with the full intention of studying Geology at University. However, it became apparent to Ed that his real interests were in the countryside.
“I had always grown up in the countryside in a farming family, so have always liked getting muddy and enjoyed practical tasks. Countryside Management seemed like the natural progression instead of university, as it combined the increasingly important theory behind countryside regulations with real work.
Joining the Heritage Academy to study Countryside Management was one of the most positive decisions I have every made. One of the biggest incentives have been the team and their knowledge of the countryside
from forestry to animal care; they all have boundless enthusiasm.
The course has incorporated many field trips and work experience with countryside organisations. I have visited Uffington, Avebury and the Big Pit in Wales. I have also worked in Stroud with British Waterways on a canal restoration, and Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust at sites of ancient woodland. I have organised placements with Westonbirt Arboretum and the Oak and Furrow Rescue Centre.”
Ed finished the course in June 2009 with a triple distinction and is now continuing his work in the countryside, working for Barnsley House and Cirencester Cricket Club. He is also about to start work at the College as a support technician for the Countryside Management course.

Kim NelsonAccess to A-Levels
Shaun Scotford
Shaun joined the College in September 2008 to take the Foundation level 1 programme. Students work toward the ASDAN Certificate in Personal Effectiveness (COPE).
“I am in College studying 4 days a week and on Fridays I work as a voluntary teaching assistant in a reception class at a primary school. I really enjoy combining my study at College with
my work at the school. I have met lots of new people and friends.” Whilst at College I have also enjoyed college trips including one to Cadburys World.
After successfully completing the Foundation Level 1 Course, Shaun will be joining the Level 2 Childcare and Education course in 2009.
Kim joined Cirencester College from Acorn School to take a programme of GCSEs.
“I came from a small school which does not do exams, so I really wanted to get back on track so that I could start my AS-levels. The College offered some really interesting GCSE courses and they seemed to have a very close community.
The teachers are really passionate about the subjects they teach and I always feel I can ask advice. Some of the teachers show such enthusiasm for the subject that it really inspires me to perform to the best of my ability.
Initially I was nervous about joining College as it was such a different environment for me; however I soon found out how friendly everyone is and I now have lots of new friends. I am so much more confident and happier about interacting with other people, and I have the College to thank for that.”
Kim will start his AS-levels in September 2009.

Shona MoisejevsFoundation Entry Level(New Directions)Shona joined the Foundation Entry level course a year ago which is a flexible programme tailored to
Shona’s requirements. Shona studies subjects such as catering and food hygiene.
Her catering skills were useful when she went on a trip to Foxes Hotel in Minehead where she helped in the restaurant. Shona also enjoyed doing her work experience at the Brewery Arts Cafe.
As part of the course, students also work in the Cirencester College staff coffee bar. “I enjoy making the fillings for the sandwiches, but I love baking cakes like lemon sponge. I would like to learn how to make the chocolate brownies though as they look delicious!”
Shona has also enjoyed a camping trip with the other students on her course to Keynes Water Park and learning how to do archery.
Natalie is on the E2i course which is designed to help students to work towards their own learning goals. Students work on their literacy, numeracy and independent skills.
Since joining the college Natalie has particularly enjoyed her art, computer and cooking lessons.
“I have made lots of new friends at College. We went together on a trip to Cotswold Wildlife Park which helped us with our Owl project. I have also been on an Activity Day to Keynes Water Park where we built rafts together and learnt how to do archery.
Before we do our cookery lessons, we spend some time in Cirencester buying the ingredients from the shops.”

Apprenticeships are designed to offer young people between the ages of 16-24 the opportunity to gain skills and achieve a qualification through a structured programme of work and study that will lead to the achievement of a National Vocational Qualification (NVQ), Technical Certificate and Key Skills.
NVQs are work related, competence-based qualifications designed to ensure you’re totally clued up about your particular industry. Developed by the industry for the industry, they are hands on qualifications you can apply directly to the world of work. You can do an apprenticeship whilst learning on the job and earning a wage, but it’s also possible to study them full-time at College.
There are five levels of apprenticeships and levels 1 to 3 can be taken at 16. Cirencester College currently offers apprenticeships to 16-24 year olds in:

apprenticeshipsAfter completing her BTEC National Diploma in Media,19 year old Victoria Walker joined the staff of Cirencester College as an apprentice.
“I applied to do an apprenticeship because I wanted to gain practical experience within my chosen workplace, with the opportunity to further my studies. I feel you get a better grounding for working practices and real work situations, whilst at the same time getting training and getting a salary!
I have to deal with different problems and situations everyday which is helping me to learn very quickly and gain lots of experience. I am also benefitting from getting the best of both worlds; working with an employer and studying with my peers. You learn to become part of a team as well as facing individual work challenges.
I hope all the experience I gain in my apprenticeship will stand me in good stead for the future as I think employers will see that I will have a wealth of relevant experience that I can offer them.”

What is like to be an academy mentor?
Mike Hellens (Managing Director of Matters Media Ltd) mentors Charley Ridley (see opposite).
“Working with an enthusiastic, quality product like Charley means that we can cover a wide ranging dialogue. Topics
can include anything from work skills to presentation to placements. We also discuss any problems encountered on the course and as a representative on the Marketing Academy Board I am able to convey these concerns to the relevant people... problem solved.
The mentoring task has been a real challenge. I had to learn a discipline alien to the advertising business, that of ‘listening’!”
The student experienceRebecca Kilbey graduated from the Finance Academy in the summer of 2008. Whilst in the Academy she spent her summer internship at Cirencester Friendly Society. “Studying at Cirencester
College with the Finance Academy enabled me to be a lot more positive in my thinking of the working world. Undertaking my internship allowed me to become more certain at going into new places and knowing that I could work in an office environment. This meant that after college I was confident enough to apply for a job and go for an interview, this confidence I think helped me to obtain the job which I have now been working in for a year.” Rebecca is employed as a Business Processing Administrator at Cirencester Friendly Society.
James Ogden graduated from the Finance Academy in 2009 with a double distinction in his Business National Diploma and a distinction in his Award in Personal and Business Finance. James will now be continuing his studies at Oxford Brookes University.
Whilst at Cirencester he enjoyed a six week paid internship at St James’s Place, Cirencester, and visits to AIG and Lloyds in London.
“When I worked at St James’s Place I was in the Asset Management Department, where I made fund comparisons for clients and Independent Financial Advisers. The work was really interesting and I was really fortunate that they have left the door open for me. My mentor also came from St James’s Place and has been an invaluable part of my studies.My ultimate dream is to go in to an investment banking company or a stock brokers in the city.”
James is one step nearer to achieving his ambition; he was privileged to be offered a personal introduction by Career Academies CEO, John May, to the Managing Director of Goldman Sachs International, Jon Symonds, who invited James to visit him at his offices in London and find out more about how his personal career aspirations could become reality.

“The Career Academy is a well-established national programme which links straight in to businesses. It has enabled me to utilise what I am learning in the classroom, at business meetings or trips organised by the Academy.
The Career Academy is all about raising aspirations and trying to give students a more realistic and successful start to their business career.
I have a mentor (Mike Hellens, see page opposite) who has a wealth of knowledge and experience which has been really inspiring to me. Having such an experienced business person guiding and advising me has really helped me to make the right decisions. He is not only helping me now but giving me advice and good foundations for the rest of my
career, for which I am very grateful.In the summer I am spending my internship with Talk Talk and Hello Magazine in London, where I hope to get involved in all aspects of marketing. This will help me narrow down which area of marketing I wish to specialise in.
In your first year you go to London and meet up with all the other career academies around the country; we also visited McGraw Hill in Canary Wharf where we had a tour of the business and talked to the senior management about the company, followed by a national conference organised by Career Academies UK. I have also represented the College as a student ambassador at meetings in London and Bristol.
I would like to go to Oxford Brookes next year to study marketing and business management, although, if any other opportunities come my way, I will definitely look at the options available to me.”

Cirencester College’s mission is a commitment to students to ensure they realise their full potential, by achieving the qualifications and skills needed to access higher education and employment.
To help students develop the kind of skills employers demand, we have launched the Academy Job Shop – the College’s very own job finder service designed to help students to find the right kind of job – whether that is a part-time job that will enhance their CV, a high profile paid internship, work experience or the career of their choice.
The service advertises jobs via its website and on the Jobshop notice board in the College. Students will be helped in their applications by the provision of job skills workshops and one-to-one careers coaching.
For full-time students, the Jobshop will help to provide valuable additional cash and enhance their future CV and career prospects. Employers value young people who can communicate articulately, are IT literate, numerate and “employable”. The Academy Jobshop will help students achieve this.

cirencester college charitable trust
As the top tertiary college in the country, Cirencester College is attracting ever greater numbers of students. With greater numbers come greater funding issues which this year have been made even more acute by the credit crisis.
The Cirencester College Charitable Trust was set up to provide a tax efficient opportunity for parents, former students and others with an interest in the work of the College to help improve facilities for students which would not normally be funded from Government sources.
Last year we received donations and tax refunds for over £27,000 which enabled us to:
l build ’Inspire’, a small shop run by the entry level students selling snacks, crafts and other items to College students, staff and the public
l provide furniture for a ‘drop in’ IT and recreational area
l provide funds for students experiencing acute financial problems
As the problems of the economy continue, we expect that there will be more calls on our funds for students in financial difficulty. On a larger scale, the plans of the College for a complete relocation and rebuild have been put on hold. The management of the College are reassessing their plans for new buildings and it may well be that the Charitable Trust has a key part to play in funding these developments.
In the meantime, we hope with the benefit of your donations, to continue to help those in difficulties and to improve facilities for all students.

The football academy concept was initiated by Cirencester College and Cirencester Town Football Club in 1996.
The vision was to provide full-time soccer coaching in conjunction with full-time education. This model set the benchmark that numerous colleges have followed and it gained the coveted National Training Award in 1999.
The weekly training regime involves:
l Daily individual training and team coaching
l Individual player assessment and development
l Football Fitnessl Individual fitness profile and advicel Diet and nutritionl FA coaching and refereeing qualificationsl League fixtures (including South
West Counties Under 18s and English Colleges’ Football league) and Football Conference
l Cup competitions (ESFA Colleges’ Trophy, FA Youth Cup, English Colleges Cup and Glos County)
After completing your time in the Football Academy you could progress to:
l Careers in professional football and semi-professional football
l Football coachingl Football refereeingl Further and Higher Educationl Full-time work in sports and/or leisure
related areasl Overseas scholarships in the USA
As a member of the Football Academy:
l You will have a full programme of academic/vocational study
l You can select from the whole range of programmes offered by Cirencester College e.g. A and AS-levels, National Diplomas and Awards
Players are selected for the Academy on the basis of their football ability. Trial dates for the September 2010 entry are in March/April 2010. To find out more you can contact the Admissions Office at the College.
Prospective students should however submit their applications for a college place well before these dates.

After leaving school, Ethan wanted to pursue his passion for football whilst continuing his academic studies in English Language and PE.
“Cirencester College’s reputation is renowned for achieving the highest pass rate percentage. The College is supportive, and the Academy and tutors work closely together to develop the students’ abilities and needs.
Tutors always go out of their way to encourage us. We are shown respect as an adult and this is equally reciprocated.
This has undoubtedly been a learning curve and an encouraging way in which to mature and be matured. I have made good friends, learning more about myself and become more independent.
My plan is to successfully gain a football scholarship in Canada. With the College’s support and encouragement I see this goal as easily achievable!”

Cross College FootballOver 30 players had the opportunity to represent the College this year.
