Theme: “Wetlands for a Sustainable Urban Future”

The World Wetlands Day (WWD) is celebrated every year on 2nd February to

commemorate the signing of international treaty ‘Ramsar Convention on wetlands’

in 1971 for conservation of wetlands at the global level. 26 wetlands as identified as

Ramsar sites covering 15 states.

The Theme for world wetlands Day, 2018 is “Wetlands for a Sustainable Urban

Future”. The key message is urban wetlands make cities liveable by providing

multiple benefits such as ; flood control, water supply, waste treatment , green

space and livelihoods. Urban wetlands should be integrated in to a city’s

sustainable future planning and development not viewed as wasteland. Cities

should adopt policies and actions which help conserve and promote urban

wetlands.

Activities

The ENVIS Hub on Status of Environment Related Issue of Telangana celebrated

the World Wetlands Day on 2nd February, 2018. Mrs. M.Prashanthi, Programme

officer and Mrs. R.Akhila , information officer has conducted the World Wetlands

Day celebrations at Phoenix International school, Arbor international school, ZPHS

Govt. school, Sikinaerpur, Sangareddy District and ZPH Govt. School Medak

district.
