Food donation to support the most deprived

In the world, 1/3 of food produced for human consumption is wasted. This represents 1,3 billion tons per year.

At EU level, manufacturing + retail/wholesale + catering + households = 89 million tons of food waste per year or 243 000 tons per day or 179 kg/capita/year

Unsold products/surplus/leftovers…

• Uneaten ordered products (catering)• Order error• Unmarketable products - ex : twisted

vegetables• Change of packaging, wrong label…• Close expiration date or date of minimum

durability...

Yet in the EU• 79 million people live below the poverty line• 40 million people can not afford a basic meal

every other day.

Many people are depending on food aid• 16 million people in the EU• More than 240.000 people in Belgium• More than 55.000 people in Brussels

Why donate ?

• Solidarity• Fight against food waste – reducing of waste

and reducing environmental impacts• Corporate social responsibility• Stock optimisation• Often cheaper than throwing (VAT Directive)

In Brussels, more than 100 organisations are active in food aid• 52 services deliver food parcels• 11 social grocery stores• 29 social restaurants and 24 municipality

Each kind of food aid meets specific needs and complements each other effectively.

To whom should I donate?

• Different choices taking into account : kind of products, distribution deadlines, expiration date, kind of food aid organisation (the services it provides ; its beneficiaries), distances,…

What can be given?

• All fresh products, frozen products or dry goods• Organisations recognised by AFSCA/citizens• Food safety• Expiration date or date of minimum durability• Intact packaging• Product with wrong labeling ?• Information on allergens

What can be given?

• Hot and cold chains holding• Refrigerated transport (bags, boxes, t° control, …)– Cold meals – max 7°– Hot meals – above 60°

• Defrosted products not to refreeze • « Home made » freezing : date + type of product –

max 2 month

What can be given?

• Responsibility : transfer of the responsibility during the donation but the company is responsible in case of health alert.
