FeaturedresearchstudentAnisahDickson,EdDcandidateTitle:LettinggooftheInternationalBaccalaureate'sMiddleYearsProgramme:Keystakeholders’perspectivesSupervisors:A/ProfLauraPerryandDr.SusanLedgerI am examining the experiences and perceptions of stakeholders at public and privateschools in Australia that have recently discontinued offering the InternationalBaccalaureate’s (IB) Middle Years Programme (MYP).The IB is a highly esteemedacademic curriculum framework that is offered inmore than 4,000 schools around theglobe.Aspartofmydatacollection,Ihavecarriedoutinterviewswithprincipals,former

MYP coordinators and teachers at three schoolswith a range of socioeconomic compositions. I amusinginterpretive, thematic analysis techniques to analyse the interview data. Cross-case analysis will also beconducted to examinewhether the findings varyby school sector or socioeconomic composition.Through thisresearch, I seek to createnewknowledgewhichmay in turn informother schools, inAustraliaandelsewhere,abouttheperceivedmeritsand/ordrawbacksofofferingtheIBprogrammes,specificallytheMYP.

AniWidayati,EdDTitle:Teachers'ProfessionalismandContinuingProfessionalDevelopment:TheperceptionsofAccountingTeachersinVocationalHighSchoolsinYogyakartaIndonesiaSupervisors:A/ProfJudyMacCallumandDrAmandaWoods-McConneyIconductedresearchonIndonesianvocationalteachers’perceptionsofprofessionalismand continuing professional development (CPD). Employing a qualitative interpretiveapproach, my research included both certified and uncertified vocational high school(SMK) teachers whomight have different views, supports, and constraints concerningtheir CPD. Bronfenbrenner’s bioecological model was used to explore Indonesian

vocationaleducationteachers’perceptionsofprofessionalismandcontinuingprofessionaldevelopmentandtheenvironments in which development occurs. We found that SMK teachers’ explanation revealed a range ofperceptionsofprofessionalismandCPD,fromtraditionaltomoretransformativeviewsofprofessionalism.SometeachersconsideredreligiousvalueswhenexplainingprofessionalismandCPD.ArangeoffactorsaffectedtheirCPD,includingpersoncharacteristicsandenvironmentalcontextsatthemicrosystemlevel,themesosystemlevel,at theexosystem level, and themacrosystem level. The factors found to affect their CPDprovide insights intowaystofurthersupportvocationalteachers’professionaldevelopment.

HelenDempsey,PhDTitle:EarlyCareerCasualTeachers:NegotiatingprofessionalidentityinmultiplecommunitiesofpracticeSupervisors:A/ProfCarolineMansfieldandA/ProfJudyMacCallumHelen Dempsey has completed her PhD research focusing on early career casualteachers’negotiationandconstructionofprofessional identity,asprofessional identityhas been linked to teacher retention. Increasingly early career teachers begin theirworking lives employed as casual teachers, however there has been limited researchconductedwith this cohortof teachers.A longitudinal case studyapproachwasused,

beginningwithaseriesof focusgroupsfollowedby in-depthexplorationsof6 individuals,using interviewsandreflective tasks. This research found that professional identity was negotiated within personal, school andprofessional communities. Opportunities to develop relationships and engage with school and professionalcommunities contributed to a sense of belonging to the profession, whereas limited opportunities to provideevidenceofcompetencyofallAITSLStandardscontributedtoasensetheywereontheperipheryoftheteachingprofession. These opportunities varied depending on the regularity of employment, an ability tomake strongconnectionsatoneortwoschoolsandwhethertheytaughtout-of-field.Thisresearchhighlightedthecomplexityofthenegotiationandconstructionprocess.

CraigButler,M.EdResearchTitle:Asoldier'sjourney:Anarts-basedexplorationofidentitySupervisors:A/ProfJudyMacCallumandDrChrisGlassMy autoethnographic study used the developing theory of funds of identity as thetheoretical framework to analyse sevenofmy cartoons focus onmymilitary identity.Leveraging the concept of identity regulation, I found thatmultiplemilitary identitiesdevelopthroughoutacareerinresponsetoandtensionwiththemilitarycommunityofpractice’seducationandtrainingsystemandmyownidentityagency.Thisfindinghasimplicationsforthestudyofothercommunitiesofpracticeandtheidentityregulationofitsmembers.ItnowleadsmetobeginmyDoctoralresearchofVocationalEducation

andTrainingteachers’attitudetowardsprofessionaldevelopment.

VirginiaWestwood,PhDTitle:CriticaldesignforIndigenouslanguagelearning:acriticalqualitativestudyofCALLdesigninanAustralianAboriginallanguageOver30yearsofIndigenouslanguagecontinuationeffortshavenothaltedthedeclineinuseofIndigenouslanguages.ThisstudywasseatedincollegiateparticipationwithAboriginalco-researchersandinvestigatedanddesignedacomputer-assistedlanguagelearning(CALL)programthroughcriticalqualitativeinquiry.TheoreticalandpracticaloutcomesincludedaNyikinalanguageprogram,amodelandguidelinesfororallanguagelearningdesign,andidentifiedanurgentneedforpostcolonialdiscourseinthelinguisticdomain.ThequestionarisesofhowbesttoimplementthesefindingsinAustraliaandIndigenouscommunitiesglobally.

EmblyMumu,EdDTitle:AnExplorationofTeachers'BeliefsontheIntegrationofCultureinTeachingEnglishasaForeignLanguageinJuniorHighSchoolsinMinahasa/Indonesia.ThisstudyemployedqualitativetechniquesfordatacollectiontoexploreMinahasanEFLjuniorhighschool teachers'beliefson the integrationofculture in their teaching.Thestudy shows that teachers understood culture as 'awayof life' andbelieved that theteaching of foreign culture was critical in developing successful communication skillsand building intercultural communication.Western cultures (US andBritish)were thefocusoftheirteaching,accompaniedwiththeuseofacomparativemethod.

ResearchProjectUpdateDECRAPROJECTDeborahPino-Pasternak

TheARCfundedproject“ContextualSupportsfortheEarlyDevelopmentofSelf-RegulatedLearning(SRL)”iscomingtoanendinJuly2018.Overthepast3years,ateamofthreeresearchersfromtheSchoolofEducation(DrAnabelaMalpique,MsDeboraValcan,andDrPino-Pasternak)collaboratedextensivelywithsevenschoolsinPerthMetropolitanarea,andinteractedwith46teachers,131caregivers,and178students.Thepurposeofthisprojectwastoreachabetterunderstandingofdevelopmentaltrajectoriesinchildren’sSRL,executivefunctions,andacademicachievement,astheymadethetransitionfromPre-PrimaryintoYear1.Wearealsoinvestigatinghomeandclassroom-basedcorrelatesofsuchdevelopment.OurfindingssofarsignaltheimportanceofSRLasafactorstronglyandpositivelyassociatedwithchildren’sdevelopmentofacademicskillsinearlychildhood.Sofartheprojecthasproducedtwopeer-reviewedpublicationsledrespectivelybyDrMalpiqueandMsValcan,aswellasonepieceinTheConversationwhichhasreceivedmorethan21,000reads.Wehavecompletedourfinalroundofreportingwithourparticipantschoolsandwearedelightedwiththecollaborativeconnectionsthatthisprojecthasaffordedwiththosesettings.ThisgranthasalsoledtocollaborationsacrossschoolswithinMurdochsuchasco-supervisionofMsValcanwithDrHelenDavisfromPsychology&ExerciseScienceanditiscurrentlyservingasaproductiveplatformtoformnewcollaborativeconnectionswithotherschools.Welookforwardtosharingwithyoufurtherinsightsaswecontinueanalysingourlongitudinaldata.Staytuned!

• Collaboratingwithcolleaguesat6universitiesintheprocessofcurriculumdevelopmentinteachereducationwithaspecificemphasisonresilienceandnon-cognitivecapabilitiesnecessaryforeffectiveteaching;

• Workingwithateamateachuniversitytofacilitatecurriculumdevelopmentandprovideassistanceandexpertiseindevelopingapproachesandresources;and

• BuildinganationalnetworkofcolleaguesinvolvedintheFellowshipactivitiestoshareapproaches,insightsandresourcesforpre-serviceteacherresilience.
