Glory and Praise “In Memoriam” Hymnals - Our new hymnals are on the way! We are asking parishioners to sponsor one or more of these hymnals to help defray some of the cost. With your sponsorship, a label in memory of your loved ones will be printed and put on the inside cover of a hymnal with your personal message. The cost per hymnal will be $20. But any donation greater than this would also be most appreciated. At Mass next weekend two people from Parish Council will be available with signup sheets for this purpose. What a wonderful way to honour our past and present most loved parishioners! The Feast of St. Blaise will be celebrated February 8th - 9th. Blessing of the Throats will take place immediately following the end of Mass. Ministry Schedules for February are available at the back of the church. Cleaners for February – Bernice Hearn (Captain), Maureen Callahan, Brian & Shirley Delahunty. Baptismal Preparation Course – This Sunday, February 2nd at 7:30 in the Parish Chapel. February 5 - Memorial of Saint Agatha, Virgin, Martyr - It is alleged that Agatha was sent to a brothel to force her to give up her faith. After she was tortured, the Apostle Peter is supposed to have appeared and cured her. However, as a result of new cruelties, she died in prison the following day. Her intervention was credited with stilling the eruption of Mount Etna the year after her burial. She died during the time of the Decian persecution (249-251) and is considered a patron of miners, alpine guides, and nurses. February 6 - Memorial of Saint Paul Miki And Companions, Martyrs - Paul Miki joined the Jesuits in 1580. On February 6, 1597, he and 25 companions – clergy and lay – died for their faith in Nagasaki, Japan. They were suspended on crosses and killed with spears thrust through the heart. Their persecution was triggered by a nationalist fear of foreigners; for almost the next 200 years, Japan would be closed to the rest of the world. Despite this isolation, the faith survived without any priests and with only the Sacrament of Baptism. Paul Miki and his companions were canonized in 1862.
The Presentation of the Lord
February 2nd
, 2020
Sunday Reflection Today’s feast honours both Our Lord and the Blessed Virgin. It commemorates the presentation of Jesus in the temple as well as Mary’s purification as she re-enters the temple to present her Son to God. The observance of this feast began in fourth century Jerusalem. In the Middle Ages, a tradition began of blessing candles and holding a procession of light on this day. As a result, this feast is also known as Candlemas. Christ our light has come to us. The Gospel presents this epiphany to us as Jesus is revealed as “a light of revelation to the Gentiles” The challenge for us, as we celebrate receiving the light of Christ in our hearts, is to become bright beacons in our world, radiating the warmth of Christ’s light to everyone we meet.
