During this season of Stewardship Renewal, we are providing information in this space about how you can return to God the many blessings you enjoy through your gift of Time & Talent at IHM. This week we explore the Community Life Pillar.

THE COMMUNITY LIFE PILLAR

IHMers – offers entertaining programs for senior parishioners at quarterly catered lunches that are a wonderful opportunity to meet new folks and renew old acquaintances.

Athletic Association – teaches basketball, volleyball, cheerleading and soccer to children while emphasizing Christian ethics, teamwork and basic skills.

Bridge Clubs – a social outreach with an ecumenical flavor offering fellow-ship for bridge players that meet Tuesday and the First Friday of each month.

Parish Picnic Committee – plans and implements the annual Picnic, which engages and celebrates all members and cultures of our diverse community.

Men’s Club – invites all men of the parish to a year-round series of events that provide for fellowship, making new friends and expanding professional networks, growing spiritually and serving the parish and community.

Mother’s Group – a subgroup of the Women’s Club that provides mothers with young children the opportunity to develop friendships and share the ex-perience of motherhood with other mothers in the parish.

Women’s Club – provides a setting for female parishioners to socialize, per-form service and continually learn through monthly meetings. The club spon-sors the Vacation Bible School, Trunk-or-Treat and Breakfast with St. Nick.

Married Couples Fellowship – is open to committed couples who are en-gaged or in the early years of their married life, with or without children, with the mission of building friendships and community.

is underway! Reg-istered households have received a letter from Monsignor Jowdy introducing the Renewal and asking for our participation. If you did not receive materials at home, please come by the church office or visit www.ihmatlanta.org and register in the parish today! Extra commitment materials are available in the church narthex.

Shortfalls in rent accounts for the largest category of support for the poor at our IHM Conference. So understanding more about these difficult requests is a top priority for our Vincentian Case Workers.

It is rare to help someone who has lived in the same apartment for 8 years. That’s always a plus, as the landlord normally will be more flexible with a long term, solid renter. And that’s what happened in the case of a 67 year old Decatur man. He was living with his wife and 16 year old autistic granddaughter. He was working and they were able to pay the bills until his spouse became quite ill. Unfortunately, his daughter is incarcerated, so he was forced to quit his job to care for his wife. De-spite income from Social Security Disability for both the wife and granddaughter, they fell behind on their bills. When they reached out to St. Vincent de Paul, the landlord was reluctantly assessing costly late fees, yet was hoping for them to come up with the money.

Our Vincentians visited them in their home and saw how there were living. They learned that the wife had just been admitted to a nursing home. He was in dire straits! They recorded as much information as they could and said some prayers too. They spoke to the landlord to corroborate the details.

When the social safety net is not enough and life intervenes, we try to do all we can to help. Thanks to our generous IHM pa-rishioners, St. Vincent de Paul was able to quickly assist this man by providing over and above support to maintain him and the granddaughter in the apartment. His unemployment checks were to start right away and he was looking for a part time job to sustain them going forward.

If a parishioner needs help, they can call 678-892-6163. If you would like more information about volunteering with St. Vin-cent de Paul, reach out to Mike Gross at [email protected].

Q What is the role of the assembly for inquirers? How can the assembly be helpful to them?

A Inquirers feel encouraged when the faithful are good witnesses to the spirit of community and welcome them—to Mass, to parish events (outreach and social), and even into their homes. Assembly members make inquirers feel welcome when they learn their names, greet them, and engage in conversations with them. When inquirers meet parishioners and participate in the life of the community they get a sense of how the parish lives out its commitment to be evangelizers of the Good News of Jesus Christ. For more information about the process of Christian Initiation at IHM, contact Drew Denton in the parish office.

RCIA SPONSORS Do you love your Catholic faith? Are you encouraged by the growing number of people who are joining the Catholic Church as adults? We need your help to wel-come our newest members. As an RCIA Sponsor you will be paired with a candi-date (baptized adult from another Christian tradition) or a catechumen (unbaptized adult) whom you will accompany through the process of sacramental initiation. You do not have to be an “expert” or a perfect example. All you need is a willingness to support, pray for, and connect someone to our Catholic com-munity. For more information about Christian Initiation at IHM, contact Drew Denton in the parish office.

FIRST EUCHARIST FOR CHILDREN 2018-2019 Mark your calendars! Our first meeting for parents of First Communion candi-dates will take place on September 17 at 6:30 pm in the church. Eligible students will receive their First Eucharist during regular Mass times on the weekend of May 4-5, 2019. Preparation will take place throughout the school year, including the student’s first celebration of the Sacrament of Penance, which will occur at special penance services later in the fall.

BISHOP BARRON’S—THE MASS Join us in the school library, 10:15-11:15 a.m., for Part 2 of this 6-part series. Whether you are a lifelong Mass-goer or a newly initi-ated Catholic, you will come away with a deepened appreciation for the “source and summit” of our faith.
