FEEDBACK ON THE IMPLEMENTATION OF INTEGRATED SCIENCE SBA

IN 2016-2017

26 Oct 2017

SBA Supervisor

1

S.6 MARK SUBMISSION (2016-17) No. of schools participating in SBA = 12 No. of S6 students = 129 All schools submitted the SBA marks on time All schools met the mark submission requirements (i.e. at least 1 mark for Area A and at least 1 mark for Area B for each year for each student)

2

MODERATION (STATISTICAL METHODS AND PROFESSIONAL JUDGMENT)

66.6% of schools ‘within the expected range’ 16.7% of schools ‘higher than expected’ 16.7% of schools ‘lower than expected’

For those higher or lower than expected, the majority

only deviate slightly from the expected range

3

RANGE AND MEAN OF SCORES (BEFORE MODERATION)

The performance of students in Area A was generally better than that in Area B.

3 schools with SD > 10 4 schools with SD < 5 The ability of students in practical work can be reasonably

differentiated

4

NO. OF ASSESSMENTS PER AREA PER YEAR

Area A Area B

S5 Maximum 5 5 Mean 2.7 1.9

S6 Maximum 3 4 Mean 1.8 1.4

The number of assessments on each ability area in most schools was more than the minimum requirement

5

NO. OF EXPERIMENTS USED FOR ASSESSMENT

No. of

experiments

S5 Maximum 5 Mean 3.2

S6 Maximum 5 Mean 2.3

Teachers in general used different practical occasions for assessing each ability area, allowing a clear picture of students’ performance to be obtained.

6

CHOICE OF EXPERIMENTS

There has been a lack of new tasks: teachers generally assessed their students with the same set of experiments used in the past few years

Most popular experiments used for assessment: experiments on osmosis (e.g. studying osmosis in plant cells); enzyme activity (e.g. effect of temperature on enzyme activity); Ohm’s Law; UV-radiation screening ability of sunglasses

Good that a variety of tasks were used for assessing Area A in most of the schools students are trained and assessed on a range of practical skills e.g. preparing temporary mounts, assembling circuits for investigation, using suitable sensors and data loggers for tracking the variations of specific parameters

7

ASSESSING AREA B (REPORTS) Most of the assessment of Area B was still based

on the reports written for the experiments Students generally were good at

recording data in an organized way presenting data in a graphical form

Students were weak at explaining the results drawing conclusions

8

ASSESSING AREA B (INVESTIGATION PLAN) Few teachers asked students to write investigation

plans for assessment of Area B e.g. devise a cooling cup for investigating the amount of the chemical required to achieve the targeted cooling efficiency Students are generally able to identify the independent and

dependent variables involved in an investigation Students are weak at

drawing the set-up required for the investigation stating the precautions which were necessary for a

successful investigation presenting the procedure clearly

9

ASSESSING AREA B

Suggestion: after providing students with sufficient training in analysing investigations, teachers may consider asking students to design their own investigations for assessment of Area B.

10

ASSESSING AREA B Most teachers marked the reports in a consistent manner and

provided written feedback. The comments and remarks given help students avoid making the same mistakes in the future.

2018 EXAM: SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS & SCHEDULE

Annex 2 of the circular (dated 19 Sept 2017) Submission period: 4 -25 Jan 2018 On-line mark submission Requirements:

Student work: ALL reports used for assessment of Area B

Teacher Document: List of Experiments performed in S5 and S6

18

SAMPLE OF LIST OF S.5 & S.6 EXPERIMENTS

Sample on p.4 of handout Softcopy will be emailed to each teacher via DC

19

POINTS TO NOTE WHEN INPUTTING MARKS 3 mark boxes for each Area for each Year for each Student Accept 0 to 10 marks (integer only) with ‘0 mark’ meaning

extremely poor performance. If the number of assessment marks entered for a student for an

ability area exceeds the minimum requirement, the system will automatically average out the marks in the calculation of the final SBA mark of that student.

F = fail to complete the task E = exempted from SBA (permission by HKEAA sought and

granted)

P = Serious Plagiarism Cases

20

PLAGIARISM – PREVENTION; HANDLING; CONSEQUENCES

1. Preventing plagiarism in SBA: Asking students to sign a declaration form (available at

http://www.hkeaa.edu.hk/en/sba/forms/); ONE form for ALL subjects

2. Handling plagiarism cases

http://www.hkeaa.edu.hk/en/SBA/faqs/faq_02.html

3. Consequence The levels of penalty to be imposed for proven P cases are as

follows: Zero marks will be given to the task in which serious

plagiarism is proven. In addition, a penalty of downgrade by one level will be imposed in the subject concerned

For extreme cases, e.g. repeated offence of plagiarism, candidates may be subject to disqualification from the subject(s) concerned or the whole examination

FOR STUDENTS WITH SPECIAL EDUCATIONAL NEEDS (SEN)

22

• Accommodation • Applying for exemption (if applicable)

ACCOMMODATION

23

EXEMPTION

REMINDER

25

• Contact the SBA Team of the HKEAA for questions related to logistical arrangements.

• Discuss with your District Coordinator for subject-related questions.

• Explain to the student the accommodation, or why accommodation is not necessary.

• Mark in the student work the kind of accommodation / exemption involved if being selected for submission to the HKEAA.

REMINDERS Only student work with marks submitted to

HKEAA are required. The work for each student should be zipped to

one single file if the work contains more than one file.

If need scanning, advise students to use A4 paper to do their homework.

If one or two reports were lost, mark in the first page of the student work file, e.g. Chan Tai Man has lost report #2 and #5.

Attach questions/guidelines in the student work file for the convenience of checking by District Coordinators.

27

REMINDERS Suggested file naming convention:

[Subject Abbreviation] [(6-digit Student Document Number)].[File extension] e.g. INTSC(123456).zip INTSC (362880).pdf INTSC (246800).doc Student Document Number is the beginning 6 digits of the identity document of a student.

The system only accepts file formats of zip, pdf, txt, doc, docx, rtf, ppt, pptx, xls, xlsx, csv, mp4, mp3, mpg, wmv, avi, jpg or tif.

The file size limit for each student’s work file is 15MB.

28

REMINDERS Teacher Document for Integrated

Science, means S5+S6 List of Experiments performed.

REQUEST FOR A CHANGE OF STUDENT(S) FOR WORK SUBMISSION If the work of any chosen student cannot be located, or involves

any irregularities (such as mark penalty being imposed due to partial plagiarism or late submission), the Subject Panel should contact the SBA Team at 3628 8068.

Subject Panel should download the ‘Change of Student Work for SBA Work Submission’ form from ‘Mark Reports’ under ‘Reports’ menu.

Complete the section for the school and fax the form to 3628 8091. After confirming the arrangement, the HKEAA will fax the

amended form to the school for school’s record.

30

SBA ARRANGEMENTS FOR 2019 EXAM One-off submission of S5 and S6 SBA marks in

S6 (2019) Email the List of Experiments performed

in S5 to DCs in May/June 2018 Teachers are to remind S5 students of the

importance of proper keeping of the assessed reports, as their work may have to be submitted when marks are submitted in S6
