Three stages of purpose discovery

Uncovering

• Begins at birth

• Learn our values

• Shaped by our initial world experiences

• “It’s about me.”

Discovering

• Begins when we choose to make a difference in the lives of others

• Shaped by role in family or work

• “It’s about us.”

Rediscovering

• Begins when we share our purpose with everyone we meet

• When the inconvenience of the thing is less important than the time it takes

• “It’s about all of us.”

Identify your gifts

• Everyone is born with natural talents or gifts.

• Think about these things to help you identify them:– What would you enjoy doing for others, for free?– Time passes quickly when you’re spending time on

this.– Your worries disappear when you’re thinking

about this.– A bad day doing this is better than a good day

doing most other things.

Draft your first purpose statement

• Your purpose statement is your own.

• Focus on, and be confident in, who you are.

• Questions to ask yourself when drafting a purpose statement:• What gifts do you have to share?• Who do you want to benefit from them?• How will their lives be better?

• Finish this sentence: The reason I get out of bed in the morning is….

Helpful words to craft your purpose statement

Create, guide, develop, train, build, engage, prevent, promote, advance, change, ripen, improve, mature, grow, cultivate, shape, form, construct, assist, contribute, discover, produce, generate, rally, mend, restore, repair, inspire, motivate, influence, persuade, teach, administer, lead, share
