GOALS FOR TODAY• Get to know each other a bit

• Go over the syllabus

• Sign in & get familiar with the lab computers

• Q&A

ABOUT MR. PARKER• Evergreen High ‘85

• Electrical Engineering, PLU and UW ’92

• 20 years at Microsoft as a Program Manager

• 4th year teaching

• Things I like to do…

MY PHILOSOPHY• This is an exploratory course – I don't

expect all of you to make Computer Science a career

• Work hard, be honest, help others, and you’ll go far

• I expect the same of you in this class and at this school

• I’m here to teach and help you grow & learn (not just about computers)

MY GOALS…• Help you build your own toolset…•Knowledge of computers/the web• Enjoying learning and being curious•Creative thinking and reasoning to solve problems•Communicating your ideas with confidence•Collaborating with others• Integrity and Responsibility• Independence to explore on your own•Reflecting on your experience and learning

KEYS TO SUCCESS IN THIS CLASS (AND LIFE)• Stay focused on your work

• Take risks – ask questions, experiment

• Have a Growth Mindset (vs. Fixed)•More on next slides…

FIXED MINDSET

• Belief that you are what you are and you can’t change it

• An urgency to prove yourself over and over

• Belief that talent/smarts means success• If you’re an A student, you think you’re set for success• If you’re below that, you believe life will be hard/harder

• Studies have shown that this is completely wrong!• If you’re an A student, this mindset can hurt your chances dramatically and you’re setting yourself up for failure• If you’re below that, this mindset can make you destined to live out what you believe

GROWTH MINDSET

• Belief that abilities and skills can be developed throughout life

• This one simple belief creates a love of learning, practice, and trying/failing/trying ‘til you get it

• Achieving expertise/success in anything is due to purposeful engagement in learning it, not some in-born ability

• Wherever you are, it’s just a starting point for moving forward

• Don’t play only to your strengths, or you’re stuck where you are and won’t grow

• Don’t worry about your deficiencies – seek to grow to turn them to strengths. Especially when it’s hard/challenging

SOCIAL CONTRACT• To allow us all to learn as much as we can, what are

the things we can do as a class, in the way we conduct ourselves, and the way we interact with others?

• My additions:• Treat this class like a job – come in, stay focused, and work• You have my respect already, but you can lose it• Bathroom• During lab time, just ask. Not during lecture• Keep it to once/week, don't abuse the privilege• Keep it to 5-7 minutes max

ICE BREAKER• Everyone in the center of the room, then move

to one corner based on the choices I give•Morning person, night owl• PC, Mac, Android, Linux•Quiet, Medium, Loud• Android, IPhone, Windows Phone, • Skittles, Starburst, Sour Patch, M&Ms• Creative, Analytical, Friendly, or Driven• Seahawks, 49ers, Broncos, Other• Spring, Summer, Winter, or Fall• Down-time: TV, Book, Music, Texting
