Agenda

What is (and isn’t) the flipped method?

Why would I consider flipping?

Benefits of the flip.

How to flip.

The data.

Resources.

But first a video.Learning Can Be Fun!

What would

you like me to cover?

Flip Teaching

Using native teacher produced video to shift any form of instruction from the classroom, to the homework setting.

Flip DefinedFlipping the instruction (Reverse Instruction). Direct instruction (lecture) becomes homework. Practice and application is now done in class.

Off-load direct instruction to free up class time.

Leveraging technology to appropriately pair the learning task with the learning environment.

Different flip models.

ABC 7 News Report

Flip Models

Step 1: Classroom exploration.

Step 2: Homework explanation (the

flip).

Step 3: Classroom application.

Creates an inquiry cycle where

students construct knowledge, while also off-loading any necessary

direct instruction to the homework

setting.

Step 1: Homework

instruction (the flip).

Step 2: Classroom application.

Off-loads instruction to the homework setting, thus opening up

classtime for student-centered activities,

inquiry and critical thinking.

Step 1: Homework pre-training (the

flip).

Step 2: Classroom instruction.

Via short (<5 min) topic

introductions for homework, long-

term memory schema is

constructed and intrinsic cognitive load is managed

Step 1: Homework

instruction (the flip).

Step 2: Classroom application.

Students work towards mastery

using robust criterion-based assessments. Instruction is

asynchronous, and students

self-pace.

Benefits of the flipReduced cognitive load (Making information appear less complex without sacrificing content).

Reduces both intrinsic (information) and extrinsic (environment) load.

Frees up the teacher for more one on one.

Differentiated Instruction.

Ongoing access to content.

Can watch, pause, rewind, watch again.

Support Implementation of mastery in the classroom.
