Some basic English idioms that are used in everyday speech.

ALL

all of – celých – I’have been waiting for you all of 30 minutes.

above all – především, v první řadě, hlavně

Above all, you should speak more slowly.

After all – 1 - vždyť, konec konců; 2 - konec konců, nakonec

and all – jakbysmet. (The dog ate the sausage, mustard and all)

all in all – celkově vzato, když se to vezme kolem a kolem

at all – vůbec

all but – všichni, kromě

for all – přes, navzdory – (For all her sensitivity)

give/put one’s all into sth – dávat do něčeho vše

in all – celkem – There were six duck in all.

all in – se vším všudy (např. cena večeře)

of all – ze všech – first of all, last of all, best of all

of all people/ things – zrovinka (They were singing, of all things, Yesterday.)

not all that – ne až zas tak, ne zase tolik (I don’t know him all that well)

that’s all (to je vše). I’m just sad, that’s all.

MUCH

not so much (noun) as – ani tak (něco) jako

so much for – tolik o (nějaký neúspěch) – So much for my trip.

not much of – nic moc – (It hasn’t been much of a holiday. Byly to takové nic moc prázdniny.)

nothing much – nic moc, nic důležitého.

much less – a už teprve ne, neřku-li (He wasn’t a leftist, much less a revolutionary).

as much as – celých He earned as much as 6 million dollars.

as much – I thought as much – To mě napadlo.

times as much – tolikrát více

much too – příliš (The skin is much too delicate)

MANY

as many as

a good/grat many of – pěkných pár, dobrých pár

FEW

the few – pár vyvolených, nemnozí (for the few); the chosen few

as few as – pouhých

few and far between

a good few – hezkých pár

no fewer than – neméně než

to name but a few – jmenovat jen tak namátkou

be a (wo)man of few words – moc toho nenamluvit

with few exceptions – až na pár výjimek
