From the ExecutiveDirector
Hello, Everyone!I love everything about April,
except for the 15th! Tax time canbe an overwhelming season nomatter what age we are.
Let’s move past the 15th andon to the 16th, which alsorepresents a very important day;however, will not cost you apenny! April 16th is “NationalHealthcare Decision Day,” whichis a day that I truly promote.Recently, I attended a symposiumon Advanced Directives and wasamazed to learn that so many ofus, including top medical doctors, struggle to discuss their wants andwishes when it comes to their ownhealthcare decisions. Sometimesthese conversations are just plaindifficult, as we don’t typicallyspeak about whether or not wewant a feeding tube while out tobreakfast with our children. Atthis event, a well-known surgeonin the Orange County area spokeof her difficulty to have aconversation with her father, as hewas recently diagnosed with
cancer. Her father had hidden hisDurable Power of Attorney, andrefused to show or discuss hiswishes. This daughter, who statedshe had many conversations withher patients on this subject, wastotally distraught that she couldnot have an open discussion withher father.
I know that most of you dohave some sort of Durable Powerof Attorney for Healthcare, and/orPOLST form. Some of you hadthese documents drawn up manyyears ago. It’s normal for ourthoughts and feelings on ourdirectives to change throughoutour adult lives. I encourage you tohave a conversation with yourloved ones and make sure thateveryone is on the same page withyour wishes. If this conversation isdifficult to have, reach out to yourdoctor as they can be a wonderfulliaison. Additionally, we havePOLST forms in our office if youwould like to fill one out or makeany changes to your currentdocument. This form will providea quick understanding of yourwishes if any medical emergencyshould arise.
I wish you all a very happy andhealthy April!
Mary Jane

April Is “AlcoholAwareness” Month
From DRCSTammy Cooper
Since 1987, April has beendesignated to be AlcoholAwareness Month by the NationalCouncil on Alcoholism and DrugDependence, Inc. (NCADD).Often times, people get caught upin the glitz and glamour ofalcohol, and the fact that alcoholis a drug is promptly forgotten. That’s why once a year, it’s goodto remind people about thedangers and health implicationsassociated with alcohol.
Alcohol abuse and alcoholismcan affect all aspects of a person’slife. 1 in every 12 adults sufferfrom alcohol abuse ordependence; it is the mostcommonly used addictivesubstance in the United States.More than 7 million children livein a household where at least oneparent is dependent on or hasabused alcohol.
Over time, excessive alcoholuse can lead to numerous healthproblems, including dementia, liver diseases, and cardiovascularproblems. Alcoholism has little to
do with how long one has beendrinking or how much alcohol isconsumed, but with a person’suncontrollable need for alcohol.
We can make a difference byencouraging our family or friendsto make small changes, likekeeping track of their drinkingand setting drinking limits. Wecan stay proactive by knowingwhat we’re drinking and howmuch alcohol is in it. And alwaysdrink plenty of water in betweendrinks. And remember, the oldadage “everything in moderation”is never truer than when drinkingalcohol.
