FY16 Highlights
As I write this letter, my successor as ULI Charlotte Chair, Rob Cochran, has taken the reins. Looking back, I am so proud of the way our District Council has grown and thrived. I think about how our volunteers and members have delivered impactful programming, reached the community with discussions about challenging subjects, and assisted in preparing the future leaders in our community. They are the real reason for our success. As chair, I was able to experience the full impact our organization has on our community, and hope this Annual Report will give you a glimpse inside the programs, projects and people that have made a difference in land use and community building.
Some of the highlights for the past year include:• Unbelievable support by our sponsors to further the ULI mission (see page 12).• Program quality, growth, and attendance.• Impact through discussions and engagement locally, regionally and nationally.• ULI members embracing the ULI mission and thinking creatively to consider
solutions to land use challenges.
Our membership is stronger than ever before. Our District Council is recognized nationwide as one of the top performing Councils and there is so much promise on our horizon.
Your ULI Charlotte leadership is planning even more for this next year. I urge you, if you aren’t already involved to participate in the events to be a part of the conversation and to embody the ULI mission.
Best Regards,
Ron Kimble2014-2016 District Council Chair

METRICSFY16 ImpactULI’s mission touches a large array of issues, topics and factors that influence the health and vitality of our community. Members help our community in a variety of ways to make the region a better place to live. In FY16, ULI Charlotte touched our community in with:
• Impact on Economic Development, Community Development, Mobility and Neighborhood Relations As part of the Advisory Service Panel, ULI brought a national panel of experts to discuss key challenges in the South Park area. March 13-18, 2016 ULI Member panelists (from outside the Charlotte region) convened to meet with business owners, real estate professionals and the community. The panel focus areas included economic development (supporting the growth and evolution of this suburban activity center as a desirable place for investment), community design (shaping the transition of this activity center from a suburban place (auto-oriented) to a walkable mixed use place (pedestrian-oriented), mobility (providing a balanced approach to mobility that creates viable choices and encourages walking, cycling and public transit), and neighborhood relationship (protecting and strengthening the surrounding neighborhoods as valuable places to live on the edge of a vibrant activity center). The final report is available at https://goo.gl/hrEtIi.
• Impact on the Real Estate Profession Since 2014, ULI Charlotte, ULI Triangle and ULI South Carolina have partnered to host the Carolinas’ Meeting and Regional Initiative Councils (RICs). These events bring together members from across the Carolinas to hear luminaries like former U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development Secretary Henry Cisneros and to dive deep on critical topics like gentrification and leadership. The Third Annual Meeting hosted more than 600 attendees and spurred collaboration on land use challenges inherent in these 18-hour cities and the three RICs gathered over 100 members in Raleigh and Durham during FY16. View a summary of the meeting at https://goo.gl/Cg8sLV and get more information about RICs at https://goo.gl/71jKx6
• Impact on Housing and Community Building The Women’s Leadership Initiative (WLI) supported the 25th Annual Women’s Build. ULI Charlotte participated in an Adopt-a-Day as part of the Habitat for Humanity’s Women Build. During 2016, four homes in the Charlotte area were built by women only. ULI did our part on June 16 as we endured hot temperatures installing trim work, building fences, and preparing a house for its new owners. Find out more at https://goo.gl/Hh58MW.
