DESCRIPTION

Talk on 'nano-publication' held at EUA conference in Giessen, Germany

TRANSCRIPT

The purpose of open access is to ensure that scientific knowledge can be used and built-upon by anyone

Open access is a means to a goal – not a goal in itself

What if we could freely get to all the essential knowledge contained in scientific articles, without those articles necessarily being open access?

Current knowledge transfer

Current knowledge transfer

Signal to noise ratio?

Current knowledge transfer – an analogy: needle transport

Shouldn’t we focus on the ‘needles’ and learn how to reason with the essence of available knowledge?

If we did, we could have:

– access to far more knowledge than now– access to knowledge in our own language

irrespective of the language it was first written in

problemEvery has its solution

What is needed? What do we have to do? What do we still have to overcome?

The relations between the corners:

1. Object evokes Concept (in writer’s or speaker’s mind)2. Writer/speaker uses Token to refer to Object3. Token evokes Concept (in reader‘s or listener's mind)4. Reader/listener refers Token back to Object

International Reach

De-PDF repository content(or at least add XML or HTML versions)

Convert literature to nano-publicationsit is cheap – current estimate ≈ ¢’s per kilo-character (≈ 1 typical research journal page)

Share nano-publications (in an open triple store)

Start with biomedical (life science) contentsimply because semantic concept methodologies are most advanced in that area
