DESCRIPTION

A presentation prepared to focus on the localized weather change. Also an effort to help people working in field/sites (like I) by showing that the amount of physical work on site/fields and effort that was put a decade ago [as constantly reminded by some of the seniors we are working with ;) ] cannot be expected in this situation anymore. Either efficiency/work or health/safety will have to be compromised. I'd prefer amount of work to be compromised. Yeah, sure, the obvious answer is, recruit more people, create more teams.

Global Warming

Prepared by: Sohil Shah

Future readers may view IPCC reports not as landmarks of scientific inquiry, but as suicide notes from a lost civilization. - IPCC

Content• Some Facts• Harmful Effects• Localizing Facts• Focusing on Ahmedabad

• Field People / Outdoor Workers

Some facts• Industrial carbon-dioxide

emissions have risen by 50% since 1997

• Temperature rose : 0.04°C / decade – without considering Arctic

• With Arctic: 0.12 °C / decade

CO2: A rise in concentrations from preindustrial levels of 280 parts per million (ppm) to 560ppm would thus warm the Earth by 1°C.

Effects…

GlobalWarming

Temperature

Drought Species extinction

Most corals losses

Flood

Increases of intense tropical cyclones

Much higher

sea level

Predicted a 96% decline in tiger habitat in Bangladesh: leaving with 16 tigers within Bangladesh

Health

Contaminated urban flood waters

Very low ground water in Haryana,

Rajasthan

Diarrheal dieases

Pathogens and Parasites multiply

faster

Katrina Hurricane caused approx. $100 billion damage. But reduction in crop along with increased health damages will be much more damaging

Localizing the facts• Mean annual temperature exceeds 2˚C in the mid-

21st-century BUT ranges from greater than 3˚C over South and Southeast Asia• India will be in one of the most affected countries

Year Avg Temperature Increase in India

2045 – 2065 2-3 °C*

2081 - 2100 3-5 °C

* warmest increase being 4-5 °C

Increased poverty in parts of Asia: Worsen from climate change on rice production, and a general increase in food prices and the cost of living

Localizing the facts• The 2007 prediction: Himalayan glaciers would melt

by 2035

• Recent: Melting of Himalayan glaciers would impact 1.2 billion people in the region

Increased poverty in parts of Asia: Worsen from climate change on rice production, and a general increase in food prices and the cost of living

Reduce crop production: two percent / decade

$1.45 trillion of economic

damage

51% reduction of wheat from Gangetic plain

200 million people
