GOOD SHEPHERD PARISH
Message from Monsignor René Mathieu Happy Father’s Day! (1) Beginning next Wednesday, June 18, we
will resume our summer schedule for Wednesday Masses. The 9:00
am Mass at St. Joseph in Biddeford for the benefit of Saint James
School will be omitted during the summer months while an 8:00 am
Mass is added at Saint Margaret in Old Orchard Beach. A 9:00 am
Mass will continue on Wednesdays at St. Philip in Lyman.
(2) 2014 Catholic Appeal: On June 6, the appeal reached 63.26% of the statewide
goal; Maine Catholics pledged $1,707,924 toward a total goal of $2,700,000. This
compares favorably with last year when only $1,394,694 had been pledged by this
time in June. Good Shepherd Parish is following a similar trend -- $100,683
(63.34%) has been pledged toward a total goal of $158,966. I am grateful to parish-
ioners who have pledged so far and encourage others to do so by the end of the
month. This is a sure way to help our neighbors in need across the State of Maine.
(3) Three men are being ordained to the priesthood this year for service in the
Diocese of Portland. Fr. Kyle Doustou was ordained at the Basilica in Lewiston on
May 31. Fr. Brad Morin was ordained at St. David Church in Madawaska on June 6.
Former city manager for the City of Biddeford, Deacon Edward Clifford was to be
ordained a priest at the Cathedral, this Saturday, June 14 at 10:00 am. I have invited
Fr. Clifford to celebrate Mass at St. Joseph Church next Saturday, June 21, 4:00 pm.
Also, Steven Cartwright will be ordained to the transitional diaconate on Sunday,
June 15, 10:00 am at the Cathedral. Please keep them in your prayers. At this year’s
Clergy Institute in May, one session dealt particularly with promoting vocations to
the diocesan priesthood. Afterwards, Fr. Antonydass, Fr. Dickinson and I compared
notes and discovered that each of us agreed that certain men and boys in the parish
may have such a vocation. You can be sure we will be speaking with them. But I
invite all parishioners to seek out and speak with individuals who appear to have a
vocation in service of the Church. It has been far too long since we last celebrated an
ordination in our parish! This is the measure I urge you to use: “Would I want this
person to be the parish priest for my family?” (4) Thank You of the Week: To
parishioners who have worked so hard to recover the beautiful gardens on the Most
Holy Trinity Church grounds. Thank you!
Jokes Priests Can Tell, Volume 4 by Msgr. Arthur Tonne: The aged man was in the habit of walking to the church of his choice every Sunday
morning. The old man was somewhat deaf and could not hear a word of the sermon
or the music or the singing of the congregation. One day, his grandson asked him,
“Why do you waste all that time in that church when you can’t hear a word that’s
said?” The old man replied: “I want the neighbors to know which side I’m on.”

only Son." How can you give yourself to God the
Father in response to that love? Could God be
calling you to live His love as a priest or in the
consecrated life? If you think God may be offer-
ing you this grace, call Fr. Nathan March at

The pipe organ originally in Notre Dame Church in Saco will be
dedicated for use in the crypt chapel of the Basilica of Saints Peter and
Paul in Lewiston during a Mass that will be celebrated (in the French
language) in the basilica chapel next Saturday, June 28, beginning at 4:00
pm. The organ was dismantled last year and taken to Lewiston where it has
been re-furbished, thanks to a gift from the estate of Fr. Maurice Morin.
Father Morin served formerly as parochial vicar of St. André in Biddeford (1967-
1970), and pastor of St. Joseph in Biddeford (1983-1989). Members of his family
will be present for the Mass and dedication ceremony. Monsignor Mathieu also will
attend, and invites interested Good Shepherd Parish members to participate as well.

Saint James School
participates in
sports programs
throughout
the year with
various area middle schools. The teams have volunteer coaches
that give their time and talents to helping the teams succeed.
We are pleased to report that both the softball team and baseball
team have had an undefeated season. They have won every single
game! This is the first time in Saint James history that this has
happened! Congratulations to the players and many thanks to the
coaches. It has been amazing
watching how these teams
grow in their skills and bond
in their friendships!
Saint James School is a lot
smaller than many of the
schools that it plays but be-
cause of the attention of the coaches and the perseverance of the
players, they were able to remain undefeated!
Saint James School also has teams in soccer, indoor track and
basketball! They, too, have had tremendous seasons!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Saint James students in second grade
had a very special day when they
received the Sacrament of First
Eucharist and Confirmation. They
have been waiting for this a long
while. Here is a photograph of one of
the groups of students. They wore their dresses to the Saint James
School Mass on Wednesday. Congratulations! ~ Nancy Naimey
