representing different fossil groups. Students will gain an insight into the interactions between
biotic and abiotic components of the environment. Through this they will understand the
conditions prevailing in a particular geographical area which allows for a particular species to
grow. They also learn about the concept of energy flow in the ecosystem.
PAPER–IV: GYMNOSPERMS AND EMBRYOLOGY OF ANGIOSPERMS
The student gains an understanding about the characters and classification of gymnosperms. In-
depth knowledge about developmental stages of the angiosperms is obtained. In addition, the
student gathers information about the techniques involved in tissue culture.
III BSc:
TAXONOMY AND ECONOMIC BOTANY; MOLECULAR BIOLOGY,
GENETIC ENGINEERING, BIOTECHNOLOGY AND PLANT
PHYSIOLOGY; CYTOLOGY, GENETICS, EVOLUTION AND PLANT
BREEDING; PLANT PHYSIOLOGY
The basics of taxonomy and classification of plants as well as their characteristic features are
studied. Plants of economic importance are studied. Awareness is created in student’s mind about
the steps in recombinant DNA technology, genomic libraries, application of genetic engineering
technology in agriculture. A brief account on hazards & safe guards of genetic engineering
technology with special reference to Bt Cotton. Studies are also done to understand all the concepts
concerning the functioning of the plant, the role of enzymes and bioenergetics aspects of plant
growth. The student gets basic knowledge about genetics and evolution and understands the roles
they play in the occurrence of species. They are also made aware of basic plant breeding
techniques.
