Wetlands of the World
Description: This activity is designed to accompany the Grade 8 GUSH Workshop. Students will research different aspects of a major wetland of the world and present their findings in the format of a pamphlet.
Grade Level: Grade 8
Setting: Classroom
Learning Objectives: 1. Use a range of resources to research information about wetlands. 2. Organise research using a graphic organizer. 3. Present finalized research in the format of an informative pamphlet.

Lesson: Starter (5 minutes): Explain to students that wetlands are found all over the world. Show them the Wetlands of the World Photographs have them guess where each wetland is located in the world. Activity (over span of 2-‐3 lessons): Explain to students that they will be researching different aspects of wetlands and presenting their research in the format of a pamphlet. Topics they should address in their pamphlet are:
-‐ What a wetland is -‐ Why wetlands are important -‐ Ways in which wetlands are negatively impacted -‐ How wetlands can be protected -‐ Information about a major wetland in the world (size, location, number/type of plant
and animal species, endangerment status) Give each student a copy of the Wetland Research Organizer worksheet and explain that they can use it to organize their researched information. Students can use a range of resources to research information, including internet, books, magazines, articles etc. When students have completed their worksheet and has it approved, they can then move on to completing their pamphlet. Conclusion (15 minutes): Find students who researched the same major wetland and group them together. Each group must then prepare and present a short presentation of their major wetland to share to the class. Accommodations/Modifications Students can present their researched information in a variety of formats (video, presentation,
power point etc.) Extensions Students can prepare short public service announcements about wetlands to present on morning announcements, post on classroom website etc.
