Ground Hog Day--what an American tradition! Poor Punxatawny Phil! They wake him from his hibernation to keep up with us all! The legend has it that if he sees his shadow, it frightens him and he runs back into his burrow for 6 more weeks – meaning 6 more weeks of winter. If he does not see his shadow, he stays out and Spring is right around the corner! Ground Hog Day is on February 2nd, and this tradition makes way for us to learn about ground hogs and also about shadows! Print and laminate the following game board (there is a blackline copy for you to color in yourself if you’d prefer).

Provide small animal manipulatives for the children to use as pieces.

To Play:Provide the gameboard, dice and playing pieces.The children roll a die, move that many spots. Encourage them to discuss what they see as they go around the board.Help the Groundhog go all the way around the board from the sleeping picture to the awake picture!

Print 2 copies of the following shapes. Print one set onto colored paper.

Print the second set on white paper and color in black (to make the shadow pieces).

Laminate and cut.

Glue the black shapes into a file folder.

Provide the colored shapes to the children to match each shape to its shadow shape.

VARIATION: After printing, add numbers or letters to each shape for the children to match.

EXTENSION: Provide the playdough for the children to cover the shapes with.

Shadow Matching Activity Mats

Super Soft PlayDoughHair conditioner, corn starch, food coloringAdd twice as much cornstarch as you do conditioner.Put the cornstarch and conditioner in a bowl. Add many drops of food coloring.MIX.Then take out of bowl and knead. Add more cornstarch [1 tsp (5 mg) at a time] as needed if still sticky. The amount of cornstarch differs per brand of conditioner. Some conditioners are thicker than others.

Song Card & Song PosterHow to use:• Print and laminate the song card below (it is 5” X 3”).• Place in a can or box with other cards of songs your children

love!• In transitional times (waiting to go outside or wash hands,

etc.), pull out your song box or song can (I use a decorated coffee can!).

• Shuffle the cards in your hands saying “Shuffle, shuffle, shuffle” and your children yell “STOP”!

• When they yell stop, whichever card is on top is the one you sing! The kids LOVE this!

Each month you’ll receive one of these cards that correspond with the song poster for the month to add to your Song Card Collection!On the next page, you’ll find the Song Poster! Print and laminate for use over the years!
