• Inventory of web applications, content databases, sites, webs

• Customizations and special features like Project Server or SSRS

• Governance and information architecture

It’s tempting to skip this, particularly if you’re going with a migration tool approach.

...But don’t!

• Run Test-SPContentDatabase to find upgrade issues

• Delete old content and sites

• Remove unneeded customizations

Don’t skimp on your upgrade hardware

• For upgrades, SQL Server needs RAM and processing power

• For migrations, the PC running your tool needs solid network connections and fast WFEs

• Complex upgrades can take a loooong time

Test your upgrade strategy

• You never know what might be lurking in your farm!

• If possible, don’t commit to a go-live date until you’ve tested upgrade

• Get to know your migration tool
