History of the Toilet

Going inside

2500 BC: Harappan city builds indoor toilets.

Toilets empty into a brick-lined sewer. Technology was lost when cities were

invaded (1500 BC). Advances then took place in Europe.

Royal Flush

1500 BC: Crete install first flush toilet.When flushed, rainwater is released into a

bowl and down clay pipes running through the palace.

800 BC: Cloaca Maxima = sewer system in Rome.
