time.

2. Precautions Using Household Cleaning Agents:

• Avoid mixing cleaners.

• Use in well ventilated areas

• Keep aerosols away from heat.

• Keep all cleaners away from children.

3. Selecting the Right Cleaner:

• Read the labels.

• Know the surface to be cleaned.

• Know the cleaner.

4. Common Cleaners Found in the Home:

• baking soda – Reduces odors, cleans, polishes,

used for soaking and cleaning pots,

and is a leavening agent in cakes.

• ammonia – Used with water for cutting grease.

A strong smelling colorless gas.

• chlorine bleach – Lightens and disinfects.

5. Laws and Agencies Protecting the Consumer:

The Federal Hazardous Substances Act:

• The name and address of the manufacturer/

distributor must be on the label.

• The chemical name of the hazardous substances

must be on the label.

• The word “DANGER” must appear on the label

if the substance is toxic, flammable, corrosive,

or volatile.

• The principal hazard must be stated.

• Measures for storing and handling.

• Information concerning first aid.

• The statement, “Keep out of the reach of children”

must be on the label.

The Environmental Protective Agency (EPA):

• Examines and approves disinfecting and cleaning

claims.

• Prevents distribution of cleaning products that are

harmful to the environment.

• Enforces the labeling provisions of the Hazardous

Substance Act.
