Horizon 2020 - Three priorities:
1. Excellent science
2. Industrial leadership
3. Societal challenges
Research & Innovation
Horizon 2020 - Priority 1. Excellent
science (28 Billion Euro)
• World class science is the foundation of tomorrow’s technologies, jobs and wellbeing
• Europe needs to develop, attract and retain research talent
• Researchers need access to the best infrastructures
• Support for: European Research Council, Future and Emerging Technologies, Marie Curie actions, Research Infrastructures
Research & Innovation
Horizon 2020 - Priority 1. Excellent science
- ERC
• Independent FP7 evaluation: "…the ERC has manifestly succeeded in attracting and funding world-class research and is playing an important role in anchoring research talent."
Impact:
• On researchers (so far over 2500 world class starting and advanced
researchers funded among which 4 Nobel Prize laureates and 3 Field Medallists)
and on research institutions (480 host institutes in 26 countries)
• On developing a new generation of excellent scientists
• On advancing the frontiers of knowledge
• At policy level and on research funding mechanisms
• On exploring the commercial/social potential of ERC funded ideas
Research & Innovation
Horizon 2020 - Priority 1. Excellent
science: Research Infrastructures
• ESFRI Roadmap 2010: 48 RIs of major European
importance, a first prioritisation of Research
Infrastructures at EU level
• Horizon 2020: An increased budget, from around €1.7
billion (FP7) to €2.5 billion
• Priorities: implementation, access to Research Infrastructures, data storage, data handling
• Facilitate strategic international cooperation for global Research Infrastructures
Research & Innovation
Horizon 2020 - Priority 2. Industrial
leadership (20 Billion Euro)
• Strategic investments in key enabling technologies (ICT, nanotechnologies, materials, biotechnology, manufacturing, space) to underpin innovation across existing and emerging sectors
• Dedicated support measures for SMEs – eg. SBIR
• Public Private Partnerships – PPPs
• Debt and Equity financing to facilitate access to capital
Research & Innovation
Horizon 2020 - Priority 3. Societal
challenges (36 Billion Euro)
• Concerns of citizens and society/EU policy objectives (health, food security, energy, transport, climate, inclusive society etc.) cannot be met without innovation
• Breakthrough solutions come from multi-disciplinary collaborations, including social sciences & humanities
• Promising solutions need to be tested, demonstrated and rolled-out
Research & Innovation
European Innovation
Partnerships To accelerate and scale up the development and
deployment of innovative solutions to major societal
challenges …
• Acting across the whole research and innovation chain
• mobilising a wide group of stakeholders across supply and
demand
• Adding value to existing instruments and initiatives
• existing initiatives are keeping their own identity and lifecycle
and are contributing to the aims of the EIP
