HOW ARE FOSSILS & ENERGY RELATED?

What do you think these pictures look like?

They look like parts of animals that were once alive

Fossils A fossil is the remains of a living

organism. (It can be a plant or an animal) Includes bones, teeth, hair or shells

Sometimes, living things leave a mark in a material like: mud; by time the materials can harden into rock & these marks are saved in the rocks, this is called: Imprint & it is a type of fossils.

A fish lives deep in the Ocean.

How are fossils made?

It died & shortly sinks in the ocean’s floor.

After few weeks, the soft parts of the fish’s body begin to decay.

After several months, only the skeleton “bones” of the fish is left.

The bones are covered with the sand.

As the time passes, the bones become hard like: rocks & fossils are formed.

When the animal dies it is buried fast. The soft parts of the animal (ex. skin)

decay. Over a long time the sand and bones

become rock. Fossils are made.

Steps of fossils formation

TO BECOME A FOSSIL Must die in a wet environment Must be buried quickly so the organism

is not eaten, decomposed or weathered.

Must have parts capable of being fossilized…hard parts.

To run a car or a plane

& heat our homes we need fuel

Fuels

A material that is burned to give energy.

What is fuel?

- Fuels that forms from the remains of plants & animals are called: Fossil fuels

Fossils fuels

CoalNatural

gasOil

Coal

- Coal is formed when plants of the swamps die & buried for many years.

Oil

-Oil is found in rocks deep below the earth's surface.

-People use pumps to bring oil to the surface.

Natural gas

They are the sources from where we get energy.

Resources of energy can be: 1) Renewable resources. 2) Non-renewable resources.

Resources of energy

RENEWABLE RESOURCES

They are the resources of energy that can be used again & again “replaced”.

Examples:1) Solar energy: Is the energy from the

sun that is used to produce electricity.

{Some cars moves by solar energy}

2) Wind energy: The energy of the wind is used to produce electricity using wind turbines.

3) Moving water energy: Is the energy of

“water falls” is used to turn turbines & produce electricity.

They are the resources of energy that cannot be re-used “used again” if they finish.

Examples: Fossil fuels: Fossil fuels take millions

of years to form & once they are used up, they are gone forever

NON - RENEWABLE RESOURCES

RENEWABLE / NON - RENEWABLE RESOURCES?

Solar energy

Renewable resource

Coal

Non - Renewable resource : Because it’s a fossil fuel

Moving waterenergy

Renewable resource

Wind energy

Renewable resource

Fire “which we make it using coal”

Non - Renewable resource : Because we use coal to make it & coal is a fossil fuel

Natural gas

Non - Renewable resource : Because it’s a fossil fuel

Oil

Non - Renewable resource : Because it’s a fossil fuel
