How can tectonic hazards be managed?

Volcanoes

ConnectorSwap the information you collected for homework.

Finish the sentence……….

The impact of earthquakes is far greater on LEDC. In Sichuan in 2008 ……………………….

Remember to use comparative phrases when comparing two places/events

By the end of the lesson:All pupils will be able to explain why people live

near VolcanoesAll pupils will develop a case study of a Volcanic

event in an LEDC countryAll pupils will be able to identify short/long term

management plans when a tectonic disaster takes place

All pupils will be able to answer an exam question

For sale!Three bedroom detached house in a lovely area

Why do people live near volcanoes?

Discuss in pairs

Write idea on the white boards

Ask another person to explain what they have written

AnswersJobs due to tourismFertile soilGeothermal energyJobs through mining minerals

An eruption took place in January 2002.

What questions do you need to ask to develop this as a cases study?

Look at the information provided. Can you see any answers to the questions you have asked?

Mount Nyiragongo

Mount NyiragongoAn eruption took place in January 2002.

What questions do you need to ask to develop this as a cases study?

Look at the information provided. Can you see any answers to the questions you

have asked?

Can you put the information into the correct column

Now fill in the social, economic and environmental impact

Now you have the information can you answer the following exam question

Using an example, describe the effects a volcano has on people and property (4)

Using an example, describe the effects a volcano has on people and property (4)

In Congo, africa Mount N erupted as it’s on a conserative boundary the lava is a very runny basalt which meant that people were unable to flee the area in time and therfire perished. Due to the high temperature of the lava and the woden material of the houses a lot of homes burnt down leaving people homeless.

(Can you identify the mistakes?)

What happened once the Volcano erupted?

Put the last pieces of information in.

Looking at the aid that was given, do you think the relief effort was successful?

Discuss

Mount Nyriagongo was affect again on 2005Gases like carbon dioxide and sulfur dioxide rise

through Lake Kivu . An earthquake could shake these gases free. In Lake Nyos in Cameroon 1700 people suffocated from breathing in too much carbon dioxide.

What needs to happen in the long term?

MitigationThese measures are put in place to reduce both

the effect of the hazard and the vulnerability in order to reduce the scale of a disaster.

PreparednessThis means that Governments, communities and

individuals are ready to respond rapidly when a disaster strikes and cope with the situation effectively.

Mount NyiragongoWithin days, people began to return to Goma. This was a crisis !Why?

What could be done to minimize the death toll and damage to Goma?

Discuss in pairs

What do you do?Evacuate proceduresLava bomb sheltersAircraft to monitor the amount of gas releasedTiltmeters to detect when volcano swells up with magmaBoreholes to measure temperatureSeismometers Lahar channels to divert mudflowsEvacuation routes clearly signedConcrete sheltersWarning systems

Put these into prediction and preparation methods

Which methods do you not understand?Page 16/17

Prediction Preparedness

Look at the exam questions.Choose two to answer now

Using examples, explain how Volcanic eruptions can be predicted. (4)

Suggest two reason why the number of deaths varies between earthquakes (4)

Describe one way a region affected by Volcanoes can prepare for this hazard (4)

For either an earthquake or a volcanic eruption you have studied, describe the immediate responses in managing the impacts (4)

Mark each others workPut a tick where you think they have got a markIf they do not get 4 out of 4, what did they need to

do to get full marks.
