How effective is the combination of your

products and ancillary texts?

By Shani Travers

•When creating my horror trailer, my magazine cover and horror poster, I wanted to create a an obvious link between the three. I wanted to make the link clear and obvious so the audience can make the connection.

•I used the typography to make a clear link between the three, using the same typeface for the titles in my film, the title in my poster and the title on my magazine cover, I used a futuristic/ sci-fi typeface that could hint at there being something electronic featured in my trailer; also the title suggests this.

• Furthermore I used similar colour schemes for each media product , reds, blacks and dirty earthy colours, which is a convention of horror trailers.

• I have also used low key lighting, another convention of a horror trailer, which makes the audience uneasy and apprehensive.

• In both my ancillary texts I haven’t used the main characters, in an attempt not to reveal much about my film, only the name and the release date create an enigma surrounding my film, similar to Prometheus a recently successful horror/sci-fi film.

• I wanted my audience to be intrigued by my film and go to see it to find out, what its about.

•I believe that both of my ancillary tasks adds a further dimension of horror and enigma to my main horror trailer, which hopefully will entice my target audience to go and see my film and want to know the mystery behind my trailer.

•What is more, I believe that the combination of my three media texts is effective in attracting my target audience I also believe that I have created a good balance between horror conventions and poster conventions for my audience to feel unsettled and scared by the horror featured but feel drawn to find out more about my film.
