A MESSAGEfrom Ms. Potter-Davis
Happy Fall! It was wonderful to see so many families at Huegel for our Open House. A favorite part of my job is meeting families and seeing how proud your child is to share our school with you. If you weren’t able to join us, we hope to see you at another one of our family events. We will have our next Family Movie Night on November 6. Also don’t forget that Parent/Teacher Conferences are coming up on the afternoon and evening of November 17. Our teachers are looking forward to sharing information with you about your child’s progress. This year teachers will be sending home a conference report before you meet so that you are better able to have a conversation about how your child is doing in school. Please feel free to come with questions for the teacher, such as “What skills and knowledge will my child be expected to learn this year?, How will my child be evaluated, and What can I do to support my child at home?”
Last year Huegel was honored by the Wisconsin PBIS Network as a School of Distinction for our implementation of our Positive Behavior Support (PBS) program. It is through this program that we proactively teach our expected behaviors, which are to be safe, respectful and responsible. We are proud of our accomplishments and of our students for working to make our school a safe and thriving learning environment.

2 HUEGEL HIGHLIGHTS
Warmly,
Abby Potter-Davis, Huegel Principalaapotter@madison.k12.wi.us
We also met in our Huegel Huddles twice in September. Huddles are cross grade level groups of 12-15 students and one or two Huegel staff members, or Huddle coaches. Students stay in the same Huddle throughout their time at Huegel.
In addition to academics (reading, math, writing, science and social studies), our teachers also focus on social emotional learning. Through an engaging curriculum called Second Step, our Huegel students are learning about emotions and appropriate social behaviors. Some of the themes that are covered in the lessons include “skills for learning”, “empathy”, “emotion management” and “problem solving”. This year we have also implemented a new program called Zones of Regulation that helps kids to better self-regulate their emotions. You can learn more about the Zones program inside this newsletter, as well as hear from our specials teachers about what they have been working on so far this year, and so much more! I look forward to another great month.

WHAT ARE THE ZONES OF REGULATION?The Zones program is used to teach self-regulation
by labeling all the different ways we feel and the
states of alertness we experience into four zones.
The Zones curriculum provides strategies to teach
students to become more aware of their emotions,
improve controlling their emotions and impulses,
manage their sensory needs, and improve their
ability to problem solve conflicts.
THE FOUR ZONESThe Blue Zone is used to describe low states of
alertness, such as when one feels sad, tired, sick, or
bored.
The Green Zone is used to describe a calm state of
alertness. A person may be described as happy,
focused, content, or ready to learn when in the
Green Zone. Being in the Green Zone will help
students be successful in the classroom.
The Yellow Zone is also used to describe a
heightened state of alertness and elevated
emotions; however, one has some control when
they are in the Yellow Zone. A person may be
experiencing stress, frustration, anxiety, excitement,
silliness, the wiggles, or nervousness when in the
Yellow Zone.
The Red Zone is used to describe extremely
heightened states of alertness and intense
emotions. A person may be elated or experiencing
anger, rage, explosive behavior, devastation, or
terror when in the Red Zone. A person is described
as “out of control” if in the Red Zone.
TOOLS AND STRATEGIESStudents can develop a toolbox, which is a
collection of calming and alerting strategies a
student can pull from depending on the present
need. The tools or strategies in the toolbox are
calming or alerting techniques that help the student
in regulation. Students can use the Stop, Opt, Go
concept to help control impulses and problem solving
better solutions. Students need to first stop their brain
before they act, think of the options and how they will
work out, and go with the best option to help them
get back to the Green Zone.
HOW CAN YOU USE THE ZONES OF REGULATION?Students have received instruction in identifying the
emotions that go with each zone, as well as tools and
strategies to regulate.
Here are some things that can be done to support
The Zones of Regulation:
• Continue to practice identifying the emotions that
go with each zone
• Continue to practice utilizing tools and strategies
(It is best to practice the tools and strategies when
the students are calm, so they will be comfortable
to use the tools when they are not in the green
zone)
• When you see someone in the blue, yellow or red
zone, prompt them to identify what zone they are
in and to identify a tool or strategy they can use
to get back to the Green Zone
• If you see a student in the yellow or red zone,
prompt them to “stop their brain” and choose a
strategy to calm down.

ART NEWS!!!!!by Kate Olsen Birner
We began the school year by working on signs
for the Community Walk. Each grade level
had a different theme: Be Kind, Be Safe, Give
Compliments, Citizenship, and Be Here be on Time.
We decorated our letters with patterns alternating
in warm and cool colors, in order to make our art
work very noticeable.
We moved on to a fundraiser for Square One that
Emily Hooverson graciously organized. Thank you
Emily! Your child will bring home more information
on Square One as we begin to wrap it up. Every
student who participates will get a sheet of stickers
with their artwork on them, and folks who chose to
may order various items with their child’s artwork
printed on them.
Students who are done with their fundraiser art
project and now working on learning how to draw
a Saguaro cactus. The three dimensional drawing
techniques we are focusing on for this lesson are
highlighting, shading and using line to achieve the
illusion of depth.
Looking forward to a great year in the art room!

FMPS SENDS MADISON’S LEADERS BACK TO SCHOOL
PHYSICAL EDUCATION CORNERby Lisa GleboffHello from the gym! We started off the year by
learning a few fun playground games. Students
learned and reviewed t-ball, crateball, 4-square,
sharks and minnows and lightening. Right now
my classes are participating in my fitness unit. The
favorite activity is climbing to the top of the rope!
On October 22 my classes will get their turn with the
gymnastics equipment, which is a favorite unit for
many students. Throughout the year students will
have an opportunity to measure how much they
are moving during class by wearing a pedometer.
They really enjoy seeing how many steps they have
moved in 30 minutes. I’m looking forward to a fun
and active year in the gym!
by Drew KornishHello Huegel families. I am looking forward to a great
year here at Huegel. For the month of September,
PE had a heavy focus on recess expectations as well
as basic sportsmanship and teamwork principles. In
the coming weeks Huegel will be in its Gymnastics
equipment rotation. This is definitely a favorite for
many students as they have the unique opportunity
to explore movement in ways they may not be able
to outside of this unit. Opposite of the two weeks with
the gymnastics equipment, the students in my PE
classes will be participating in the “American Ninja”
unit. Students will be able to participate in an obstacle
course type activity that will test not only their problem
solving abilities, but teamwork skills as well. The
younger students, those in Kindergarten as well as 1st
grade will also participate in these activities with a
heavy focus on gross motor skills as well as locomotor
movements. I look forward to exposing students to this
great unit.
Since 2004, the Foundation for Madison’s Public School’s A Principal Experience has built relationships between Madison’s community leaders and MMSD staff and students. This year, Gary Schaefer with Associated Bank and Karen Walz from American Girl, one of Huegel’s Adopt-a-School partners, served as our school’s “Principal Partners” during the event held on Tuesday, October 13. Principal Partners learned what it takes to be one of Madison’s public education leaders, and also discovered just how much students and staff accomplish in a single day. A Principal Experience forges relationships between school and community leaders, laying the basis for new partnerships that support and strengthen Madison’s public schools. It is our hope that Principal Partners take their experiences back to their places of business and adopt the school they visited. The Foundation’s Adopt-a-School program cultivates, nurtures, and sustains partnerships between schools and the Madison community. Adopt-a-School partners provide a combination of volunteer time, in-kind contributions, and financial resources to meet the needs of students. In return, businesses receive a multitude of benefits including an increased sense of pride and involvement in Madison’s public schools and the awareness that they are contributing to the success of our next generation of leaders. If you are interested in becoming a Principal Partner next year or would like more information about the Foundation’s Adopt-a-School program, visit www.fmps.org, call Community Partnerships Director Mary Bartzen at(608) 237-7723 or send her an email at mbartzen@fmps.org.

Music NewsMusic class has been filled with the sounds of jazz this fall at Huegel. We are just finished our 2 week jazz residency with trumpet player, Eric Siereveld. Eric worked with all Huegel students. Grades K - 2 focused on the tune “I Got Rhythm” and learning some jazz fundamentals. All grades learned about the trumpet and the mutes one can use to change the sound. Grades 3 - 5 focused on Afro-Cuban music centering around the Son Clave, montuno, and conga patterns.
Parents of 3rd graders, please be patient as your child begins learning the recorder starting this November. It can take time for them to sound good. Daily practice of 15 minutes or more will help them achieve a good sound at a faster pace. Encourage your child to practice every day!
Parents of 4th and 5th graders, your child should also be practicing their recorder daily to achieve maximum progress.
Finally, the music room could use 3 more carpets of smaller size (enough for 4-5 students to sit comfortably and work together). Carpets music be approved for school use. Please talk with Ms. Chalone or Mrs. Potter Davis if you would like to contribute! Thank you!by Rhonda Chalone
