Imagine ThatAn introduction to imagery in everyday literature

What is imagery? Imagery is based on the five senses

Sight Hearing Taste Touch Smell

How do authors use imagery? To paint a picture for the reader To provide meaning in a story or poem To make the story come alive for the

reader

Imagery Vocabulary Sensory language Metaphor Simile Personification Onomatopoeia

Sensory Language Appeals to the 5 senses

Examples: Taste - Yummy Sight - Beautiful Touch - Rough Smell - Sweet Hearing - Loud

Metaphor A comparison made by saying that one

thing is something else.

Example: The tree’s bright red and orange leaves

were a fire in the sky

human objects
