HOUSEHOLD PET TRACKER APPINTRODUCTION
If you have a household pet, it’s likely you would become worried and stressed if they went
missing. Lost pets is a common problem for households around the globe and can cause
great stress among owners. People post lost pet ads on the internet and around the
neighbourhood a lot. Our solution to this is creating a microchip that is placed inside the pet
or on the collar that is connected to an app that tells you where your pet is anytime,
anywhere.
3. BUSINESS SECTION
3.1 Vision
To provide an easy, cheap and stress free way of keeping track of household pets for owners
anytime, anywhere, around the world.
3.2 Industry Analysis: Lost Pets Smart Phone Application Industry
Industry: Lost pet’s smart phone application industry. App designed to help with lost pets.
Force: High/Low: Justification:
Buyer power: Low Buyer power for this industry is low as although
there are many substitute services and ways of
finding lost pets, there are few if not any smart
phone apps that are dedicated to finding lost
pets. So if people want an app for this, few
options are available
Supplier power: Low Supplier power is low for this industry as there
are many different app developers to choose
from to make the app and also the app can be
2
3
released through many app stores or other
places.
Threat of new entrants: High Threat of new entrants is high for this industry as
its very easy and low cost to create an app and
have it up and running. Carter Thomas (n.d.)
indicated in his article the costs off creating apps
and showed how low it is. Rob LeFebvre (n.d.)
indicated in his article how quick and easy it is to
create an app through a free app creation tool.
This shows how easy and low cost it is to create
an app.
Threat of substitutes: High There are many substitute products for ways to
find your lost pet. For example people can do it
themselves through flyers and posters, or even
on Trade Me. In New Zealand people can post
ads on http://www.petsonthenet.co.nz/ which
“is New Zealand's nationwide database for lost
and found pets” (Petsonthenet, 2002) for free
and the SPCA also takes in lost pets. Pets can
also be micro chipped or have tags or even have
pet insurance as. As you can see there are many
substitute ways of finding lots pets.
Rivalry among existing
competitors:
Low Rivalry among existing competitors is very low
for this industry as there are not many apps for
this, but mainly because finding lost pets is a
community service, it is not a competition and
most services for lost pets would be a non-profit
organisation. For example the Found Animals 3
4
Foundation Introduces Technology to Reunite
Lost Pets with Owners (2012) article states
that “the Found Animals Microchip Registry is a free, non-profit service dedicated to reuniting lost pets with their owners”. This is just one example of many services that are dedicated to reuniting lost pets with their owners and not competing with competitors. This shows low rivalry among existing competitors.
Overall attractiveness of the industry: The overall attractiveness of the industry is high as
even though there are many substitutes and threat of new entrants is high, its easy and
quick to make smart phone apps plus buyer power and supplier power is low.
3.3 Customers and Their Needs
This company has mainly just one customer, which is household pet owners. Household pet
owners are our primary customer as they are the people who we need to provide the
microchip and app for. They have the needs of being able to keep track of their pet’s
location and also having no need to stress or become paranoid of a pet becoming lost.
3.4 The Product and Service
Our app will fulfil the customers needs by using a microchip that is placed inside the pet or
on the collar that is connected to the app that tells you where your pet is using GPS systems
and information systems. Household pet owners will be able to track their pets on the app
via the internet so they no longer need to be worried about potential lost pets.
3.5 Suppliers and Partners
Two suppliers for this product is Google and Apple as they will release the app through their
app stores to the general public so customers will be able to download the app. This ties
right into our vision as using an app store will make it easy for cusomters like the mac app
store which makes it so “getting the apps you want has never been easier.
4
5
No more boxes, no more discs, no more time-consuming installation” (Apple, n.d.). Another
supplier would be outside app developers as they will be required to code and set up the
app to make it work and function correctly. A partner for this product would be the SPCA as
they care for and look after animals and would love the idea of a lost pet app. Another
partner for this product could be Facebook as the social network can be used to advertise
lost pets and customer could link their account with their Facebook account.
3.6 Strategy: Focused Low Cost
This company will use a low cost strategy as the app will be free to download and use with a
small fee to install and register the microchip.
This company will use a narrow market competitive scope as the app will focus on
household pet owners.
The overall strategy is therefore Focused low cost
3.7 Value Chain Activity: Service after the sale
The most important value chain activity for this business is Service after the sale
Service after the sale is the most important value chain activity as when the customers have
downloaded the app and installed the microchip its extremely important we keep providing
our service of keeping track of our customer’s pets and make sure its up to date and any
calls or alerts of lost pets need to be dealt with.
3.8 Business Processes
3.8.1. CUSTOMER SERVICE PROCESS – The customer service process is an important process
to the organisation under the service after the sale value chain activity. Its important
because the organisation needs to keep the app going well for customers after they have
downloaded it to their devices. Through this process customers will be able to report
issues/problems and have them solved by a customer service agent. This ensures that the
customer is satisfied with the app and keeps using it so this process is important to the
organisation for customer satisfaction.
5
7
3.8.2. APP UPDATING PROCESS - The app updating process is another important process to
the organisation under the service after the sale value chain activity. Its important because
the organisation needs to keep the app up to date for customers through things such as new
features, bug fixes, and keeping with technology. This is needed so customers continue to
be satisfied with the app in the future and so bugs and problems are minimal. This also
ensures that the customer is satisfied with the app so this process is important to the
organisation for customer satisfaction.

3.10 Systems
3.10.1. CUSTOMER SERVICE SYSTEM – The customer service system identifies what the
customers are enquiring about when they go through customer service and then finds the
solutions available to the problem/issue so the customer service agent can tell the
customer. This supports the organisations vision as it provides and easy and stress free way
of solving customer enquiries so they can get back to keeping track of their household pets.
3.10.2. TESTING ANALYSIS SYSTEM – The testing analysis system checks if the update for the
app works after it has being developed and before it is released to the customers. This
supports the organisations vision as testing needs to be undertaken so when the update is
released to the customers it is working fine so that the product is still stress free for owners
and so they can keep track of pets easily anytime, anywhere.
3.10.3. UPDATE DELIEVERY SYSTEM – The update delivery system delivers the update to the
Google and Apple app stores who are our suppliers. Then the app will be delivered to the
customers through these app stores. This supports the organisations vision as it provides are
a stress free way of downloading the app as these app stores are well known plus the
update will keep the app innovative for customer satisfaction.

CONCLUSION
Our organisations vision is to provide an easy, cheap and stress free way of keeping track of
household pets for owners anytime, anywhere, around the world. The household pet
tracker app has just one customer (household pet owners), two suppliers (App stores and
app developers) and two partners (SPCA and Facebook). The strategy for this organisation is
focused low cost and has a key value chain activity of service after the sale. One key
business process is the customer service process which is managed by the customer service
system through a customer relationship management system. The other key business
process is the app updating process which is managed by the testing analysis system and the
update delivery system through a supply chain management system and a decision support
system.
