Algorithms play a role in building trust

20

Personalization ≠ restrictive information silo

With too much personalization

key information may be missing

Alternative viewpoints may be absent

Privacy may be threatened

EUROPEAN ASSOCIATION SUMMIT – 30 MAY 2017

5 rules to make algorithms more ethical

Avoid discrimination

Promote gender equity

Open up customers’ minds (exploration) rather than trapping them (exploitation)

Respect right of not being tracked

Educate users on algorithms

23EUROPEAN ASSOCIATION SUMMIT – 30 MAY 2017

What we do concretely at RTBF

25

Design of recommendation systems follow ethical rules

Data scientists not left alone : functional specifications describe what is acceptable

Personalization will follow the concept of deliberative democracy

Focus on exploration and discovery (≠ filter bubble)

EUROPEAN ASSOCIATION SUMMIT – 30 MAY 2017

What we do concretely at RTBF

26

Recommendation systems should allow for:

Autonomy and choice

Information quality and debate

Respect of minorities and marginalised groups

Gender equity

Promotion of real alternative viewpoints

EUROPEAN ASSOCIATION SUMMIT – 30 MAY 2017

CONCLUSION

Media consumption more and more digital : gaining online trust is key ; algorithms are instrumental

Recommendation algorithms are not neutral design them carefully and ethically

Public Service Medias have a major role to play to educate users on the role of algorithms
