DESCRIPTION

Everyone is talking about Innovation, yet do we really know what it is and how it can help us to do better projects, understand our users, reduce time wasting and reduce the risk of massive high profile failures from traditional project methodology? We use these slides to present our Innovation Unpacked workshop, which gives an insight into how innovation can help your organisation to work better, smarter, faster and more creatively. Content: ● Introduction to Innovation ● Introduction to new terminology and concepts ● We explore the difference between incremental, disruptive, open and radical innovation ● Innovation is a process - from Problem Space to Ideation Space to Solution Space ● Introduction and workshop practice using innovation tools - 5 Why’s / Collaborative Questioning / MIT Innovation Drill ● Innovation Killers - what will prevent you from innovating ● Agile vs. Waterfall Development methodology - how to avoid a big white elephant ● Design Thinking - focus on what the user needs, not what the organisation needs ● Innovation tools and methodologies

Disruptive Innovation

Creates an entirely new market category

or

Destroys an existing market category and

replaces it with something new

Problem Space

Problem Statements….?

Responding to external (political/legal) changes in our operating

environment

Developing IT systems to cope with social media / changing customer

habits & expectations

Adapting or changing our core product (homes to let)

Creating a positive image of our sector and customers

The problem is that…..1. not all our customers are able to cope with Welfare Reforms (esp. Universal Credit)

2. our IT system can't deal with changing customer habits and expectations

3. our product is losing its appeal, and this is compounded by legislative changes

4. our image and worth (as a sector) is being devalued by those who wish to demonise our customers

Innovation Killers

Our focus on short-term results drives

out ideas that take longer to mature

Innovation Killers

Fear of cannibalizing current business

prevents investment in new areas

Innovation Killers

Most of our resources are devoted to

day-to-day business so that few remain

for innovative prospects

Innovation Killers

Innovation is someone else’s job and

not part of everyone’s responsibilities

Innovation Killers

Our efficiency focus eliminates free time

for fresh thinking

Innovation Killers

We do not have a standard process to

nurture the development of new ideas

Innovation Killers

Incentives are geared towards

maximizing today’s business and

reducing risk

Innovation Killers

Managers are not trained to be

innovation leaders

Innovation Killers

Managers immediately look for flaws in

new ideas rather than tease out their

potential

Innovation Killers

We look at opportunities through

internal lenses rather than starting with

customers’ needs and problems
