CONTENTS
W elcome to the March/April edition of Inside Magazine, the local magazine for Chingford and Highams Park.
I think that it’s time to drop the pretence, folks, and let you into a trade secret. Due, you see, to production deadlines, I’m not really writing this in 2016 at all. Oh no. Far from it. It’s actually 1986. I have to prepare well in advance, you see, and I find myself wondering how your world is, 30 years ahead.
One thing’s for sure – this whole computer thing will have blown over. While I’m at it, why not hazard another guess – in 2016 you’ll have not 4 but maybe as many as 8 TV stations, all with teletext. Football will be a thing of the past and our youth will amuse themselves by exercising with robots, who will also do all the hoovering in our homes, which will all be built in the sky.
If I’m wrong, I’ll eat my words. That will be easy, though, as all magazines will almost certainly be printed on edible paper by 2016.

T his is another story of the quite-goods. Of the runners-up, the also rans and the ones that just ran
away. Of the flames that never flared too fiercely, or flickered for a while and then faded. We’re not all immortals. Some of us are quite good, though. And some of the quite-goods have their moments, when they flicker and fade.
The first scientist to address the function of memory has been somewhat – you guessed it – forgotten. He’s not all that forgotten. Just slightly forgotten. He deserves to be less forgotten, so this piece is an attempt to un-forget some of the forgotten things that time forgot. (Get on with it, forgot’s sake - Ed). He did other things. He built one of the first telescopes. He used the earliest microscope. He helped design the dome of St Paul’s. He developed the wave theory of light. He proposed a theory of evolution and extinction. He almost – but not quite – discovered gravity and the movement of the planets. He invented the Universal Joint and the diaphragm used in cameras. As a child, he built a wooden working clock, which is frankly just showing off. I could have done that too. Easily. If I had time. And he
nearly – but not quite – discovered oxygen.
In fact, if something was invented or discovered in the 17th century, Hooke was probably there, not in the forefront, but there nevertheless, like that bloke off of the TV who appears in photos behind celebrities. Well, a bit like him.
We call it multi-tasking these days. I do that. Once I did the shopping AND the cooking AND the washing-up. All in the same month. I did nothing for the rest of the year, mind you, but I proved that men CAN do it too.
Robert Hooke, multi-tasker, is quite famous. He’s not as unfamous as others we’ve looked at in these pages. But, with his achievements, why isn’t he more celebrated? One reason might be the many biographies that paint a picture of a curmudgeonly, miserable, jealous, vain, cantankerous, vengeful, caustic, irritable bloke. These attributes would have made him a reality star in our century, of course. But he was possibly misrepresented, as his diaries reveal a more caring side.
Another reason for his relative obscurity lies in his mistreatment by rivals and peers. The great contemporary scientist Isaac Newton is said to have destroyed the only portrait of Hooke. And a biography of Christopher Wren, with whom Hooke collaborated, rather wrote him out of Wren’s achievements.

Hooke himself was born on the Isle of Wight in 1635. Raised to follow in his father’s footsteps in the church, Robert was more interested in the study of mechanics, dismantling objects, drawing them, and putting them back together again. This approach to the physical world only really works, incidentally, if you have the nous to complete the project. I tried it on a camera when I was young. I didn’t quite succeed.
Hooke studied at Westminster where he was kept apart from the main school in a clique that was devoted to hiding its scientific pursuits from the Biblical eyes of the Protectorate.
In 1653 he went to Oxford, where he met
Christopher Wren and the pioneer chemist Robert Boyle. This reminds me of my own glorious years at University, where I didn’t meet any such philosophers, but we did manage to nick a traffic cone once.
Hooke worked with Boyle, the latter being not great with numbers, to produce Boyle’s Law (not, you’ll notice, Hooke’s) which was one of the first attempts to understand gas pressure. Recent investigations have
afforded Hooke more of the credit that he deserved for his work. But he remains, for all that, one of life’s greatest also-rans. Not Wren. Not Newton. Not Boyle. Just the other bloke in the photograph. If they’d had photographs. Which reminds me. I must repair that camera.

THREATS TO WOOD Woodworm
T his is the common name for several wood-boring beetles that lay eggs in crevices of woodwork.
The eggs hatch out as larvae that tunnel their way through the wood. The adults emerge as beetles through ‘wormholes’ on the surface, and lay eggs so that the life cycle is repeated unless checked. Treatment: Proprietary products are effective if used repeatedly until no fresh holes or tell-tale powder is seen. Some timbers, for example pine, walnut, elm and beech, and most sapwoods, are more vulnerable than others. Mahogany and teak are virtually immune. In general, it is best to avoid pieces that are badly riddled, but it is difficult to furnish a home with antiques – or even with modern furniture – without incurring the risk to some extent. Keeping furniture clean and well-polished helps to remove the eggs.
The main problems encountered when treating woodworm are identifying the species involved, deciding whether the infestation is still active, and deciding which timbers have been structurally weakened and need replacing. All of these factors will influence the type of treatment carried out (if any). For this reason, we would recommend that a survey is carried out by an experienced member of staff from Abbey Antiques whenever an active woodworm infestation is suspected.
Central Heating Furniture, especially if veneered, suffers from lack of moisture in the air. To avoid splits, cracks and
the lifting of veneers, provide adequate and consistent humidification. Simple humidifiers hung on panel radiators provide excellent protection. For your comfort, as well as to protect your furniture, use a humidifier in the winter and an air conditioner in the summer to keep the relative humidity at 25 to 35 percent.
Avoid placing furniture directly in front of radiators, heat runs or fireplaces. Don't expose hardwood furniture to continuous direct sunlight. Draw the curtains occasionally. Store table leaves as close as possible to the table. Keep them in an upstairs closet rather than in a damp basement, so that the table leaves are adjusting to the same relative humidity.
Sunlight Especially through south or west facing windows and glass doors will fade, dry out, warp, twist or crack solid or veneered furniture. Drop-leaf tables (pembroke and sofa) are particularly vulnerable, also tripod and tea tables.
Glass Tops Have a tendency to attract moisture. Veneers beneath glass can lift. Make sure you use clear pressure pads to reduce these damages. Glass Tops are a good long term investment and will provide low maintenance costs with regards to wood surfaces etc. Abbey Antiques are happy to provide free trade quotation for same based upon toughened glass and polished edges for safety reasons.

PLANNING AHEAD – RETIREMENT REALITIES
W hy do some people put plans in place for their financial future
whilst others do not? A key finding of a survey conducted amongst the 350,000 members of the YouGov Plc UK panel in 2015 was that those who did take the right steps tended to be people who took financial advice. The reasons for not having proper retirement plans were varied and included not having the time/knowledge to confidently do this on their own. Of the 64% who had heard of the new pension reforms only 8% fully understood what they meant and almost a third did not know what to do with their pension pot.
Taking advice matters The results strongly suggest that best advice is to take advice. Those who took advice were more aware of the benefits of taking some financial risk and developing a long term strategy. They were also aware of other financial assets that could be used as savings vehicles alongside pensions.
What is evident is that we all need to prioritise making financial provision for retirement and taking advice really could make a difference. Developing and actioning your strategy as early as possible, topping up contributions whenever circumstances permit and arranging a regular review with a professional adviser will help ensure that your retirement plans remain on track.

Funky Dogs -professional dog grooming
I t's nearly two years since we opened our new premises and it has been very successful. We
don’t keep dogs cooped up in cages, rather we let dogs chill out, play and mingle and we believe that as long as the owners are comfortable with their dogs socializing then so are we. Our aim is to make it as pleasurable as possible. It's extremely important that the dogs go home happy and that the owner feels comfortable leav-ing their much loved dog with us. Obviously all dogs have different personalities so we adapt to suit the dog, if the dog is timid or nervous we suggest coming in at a quieter time. Working with dogs can be a noisy affair! Funky Dogs offer a collection and delivery service which helps those housebound,disabled or unable to get to us, and we are open late Wednesday evenings to 9.30pm so we cater for every need. Most people are aware of how important it is to keep their dog groomed, and how better they feel after. No one wants a smelly dog indoors! Just like us you instantly feel better after a shower or any type of pampering. We offer honest practical ad-vice taking everything into account including people’s budget. The dog has to be comfortable and easy to maintain. No hard sales from us, we just want your dog to look good and enjoy the experience! Nail trims are free, we just ask for a donation to local dog rescue. We also collect all unwanted dog items on behalf of local dog rescue, just bring to our shop.

T he breakdown of a marriage can be an upsetting and stressful time for the whole family. The law can
become confusing, and all too often we see people allow their emotions to dictate their actions within proceedings. This is therefore a guide to ensure that you are able to understand the basics of a divorce.
At present there is only one ground for divorce in England and Wales and that is on the basis of the “irretrievable break down of the marriage”. The party petitioning for divorce must be able to prove that the marriage has broken down irretrievably based upon one of five facts. The Facts: 1) Adultery Adultery is defined as “voluntary sexual intercourse between a man and a woman, one or both of whom is or are married to someone else.” In the case of same sex marriages, this fact can only be relied upon if the husband or wife has had sexual intercourse voluntarily with a member of the opposite sex. This can be difficult for the applicant to prove without evidence, which shows that it is more than just a suspicion.
2) Unreasonable Behaviour The person petitioning for a divorce must show that their husband or wife has behaved in such a way that they cannot reasonably be expected to live with them. However the courts have never specifically specified what is unreasonable. Previous cases have now shown us that the “right thinking person approach” is the test that the courts will use to determine if the behaviour is unreasonable, i.e. “Would any right thinking person come to the conclusion that ‘this husband’ has behaved in such a way that ‘this wife’ cannot reasonably be expected to live with him, taking into account the whole of the circumstances and the characters and personalities of the parties.” Each case is therefore based upon its own merits.
3) Desertion Desertion is commonly misunderstood, and many people believe that it is simply their husband or wife leaving them and disappearing. Instead the
facts that need to be proved are: 1) that the parties have separated, the spouse had the intention to desert; 2) the applicants lack of consent to the separation; 3) a lack of just cause for the desertion. This all must have occurred for a period of 2 years. It is possible that the parties could be living in the same household, as long as the person applying for the divorce is able to prove that they are leading entirely separate lives. The intention of desertion must however be communicated. Desertion is very difficult to prove as each of the elements must be shown to have occurred for a continuous 2 year period.
4) Two Years Separation and Consent The Applicant must show that the parties have led separate lives for a continuous period of 2 years and one party believed that the marriage was at an end. If there is any reconciliation within the 2 year period, the clock will essentially restart. It is also essential for the spouse to consent to the divorce on these grounds. It is therefore useful if the Applicant is seeking to rely upon this fact, that they obtain their husband or wife’s signed consent prior to applying for divorce.
5) Five years’ Separation The Applicant must be able to demonstrate that the parties have lived apart for a continuous 5 year period.
Procedure: Send Petition to the courts based upon one of
the five facts (make sure you send 3 copies for the court!);
The courts will send the petition and an acknowledgement form to your spouse;
Spouse returns the acknowledgement to the court;
Apply for Decree Nisi; Start any financial proceedings; 6 weeks and 1 day after the Decree Nisi is
pronounced or after the conclusion of any financial proceedings, apply for Decree Absolute.
This is a brief guide to divorce, and no two cases are the same, therefore you should seek legal advice to ensure that you are provided with tailored advice specific to your circumstances.
