W elcome to the May and June edition of The

Chingford Directory, your local community magazine and business Directory. We may owe you all some sort of an apology. I have this vague notion that, in my previ-ous letter, I was banging on about Spring coming, and I

probably went on about flowers and blossom, warm breezes and stuff like that. I might even have waxed lyrical about a delphinium. I don’t know. It was ages

ago. Well, that whole bit about Spring was insensitive in me, I know. Should have hedged my bets. Played it safe. Should have said something that was more cer-tain, like some upsets for Tottenham.

So I’m saying nothing about the coming months. They may be hot, cold, dry, wet. There might be volcanos in Epping for all that I know. A tsunami might rush down the Roding. I shall refer, in future, to the past.

So, Spring, eh? That was cold and wet, wasn’t it?

H umans have been trying to cross the Thames for millennia. This may seem an exaggeration, but, for those of you who

have queued at Dartford, you’ll know that it’s no overstatement. I was certainly stuck there for a thousand years once.

The earliest evidence of any bridge across the Thames hints at a primitive wooden bridge at Vaux-hall in about 1600BC. Romans subsequently con-structed pontoon bridges across the river, but when the Romans left London, in the 5th century, their bridges slowly fell into disrepair and London itself

was largely abandoned. The Saxons began to repopu-late the area in retreat from invading Danes, and London Bridge may have been reconstructed to aid their flight. By 1014, the Danes controlled both sides of the river, in the City of London and at Southwark. An ally of Ethelred the Unready is believed to have destroyed the bridge to divide the Danish forces. The famous timber bridge, familiar in historic prints, was finished in 1163.

Over the centuries, more bridges were built. Then, when there were quite a lot of these bridges spanning the river, some bloke stood by the Thames

at Wapping, looked across to Rotherhithe, and felt a sudden urge to dig 23 metres down, burrow through the mud for 400 metres, and come out at the other side. Takes all sorts. Can’t say it’s an urge I feel very often. I get dizzy doing the gardening. But the Thames Tunnel was created between 1825 and 1843 to con-nect the expanding docks, the first tunnel built beneath a naviga-ble river.

Then some more tunnels were built, and some more bridges. It seems to be some instinct, as with those who must climb mountains, that when we see a river we have to find new ways across. Given all of which, it seems amazing to me that it is only in the last year that they finally got round to doing the obvious thing.

First, build giant pylons either side of the river, linking Silvertown with the O2 Arena, formerly known as The Dome, although I’ve heard it called less kind things. Then link the pylons with 1.1km of cable. Then dangle cabins across that will cross the river at a height of about 90 metres. Eh voila. You’ve got yourself a cable car crossing. And don’t those Romans look silly now with their pontoons.

The Emirates Air Line, to give it its proper title, opened on 28th June 2012, and has carried almost 2 million people. The crossing takes 10 minutes (5 minutes during the rush hour) and each cabin carries 10 people, and they are spaced at about 30 seconds.

Being naturally cautious, and having some cynicism about technology, I decided to let the 2 million peo-ple test it out for safety before I eventually went on it (or took the flight, as we are supposed to say). You’ll be glad to know that I survived, not only to tell the story (which, come to think of it, you may be regretting by now) but that I enjoyed my trip (or

flight). The view to the east goes over the Royal Docks and the Thames Barrier towards the eerie marshes of Essex where the river widens and seems to be stretching out before dissolving into the sea. To the west, beyond the strange new shapes of the Olympic Park, rise the skyscrapers of Docklands. The river squeezes tightly round the bend by the O2 Arena, which seems to sit beneath the cable car like a safety net. And beyond all that is London itself, with the old bits of skyline sharply pierced by The Shard, rising so much taller than its forebears, like an ungainly adolescent in a family shot.

When you see it from a distance, stretched across the old docks and running past the cranes and office blocks, it seems to hang like a necklace of beads about the skyline.

We tend not to treat London as a tourist destina-tion, those of us who live and work near to its bus-tle, but sometimes we all should award ourselves a day out, don some embarrassing souvenir pants and marvel at what is just down the road, up in the sky, over the river.

Community library hosts poetry evening

T he South Chingford Community library held its first public event, the Chingford Foundation School Arts Award fifth annual

community poetry evening. Theme of the eve-ning was “I have a dream”, to celebrate fifty years since the famous speech by Martin Luther King.

MC for the evening was local performance poet Neal Zetter, who entertained the packed library with a selection from his comic poems.

The audience was principally made up of par-ents and children from local schools. These in-cluded Parkside Primary School (year 4 with their class teacher Mrs Pearce), Larkswood Pri-mary School (year 6), Oak Hill Primary School, Chingford Foundation School, and Rushcroft Sports College. Via Chingford Foundation School's Arts Award supporter status, students from two schools from further afield were also present; Heathcote School and Havering Sixth

Form College. A ladies writing group in Loughton was also represented.

Children and adults presented a variety of their own poems to an appreciative audience, and each received a signed certificate to com-memorate the event. Not to be outdone, Alison Griffiths, job club coordinator from the commu-nity library, gave an impromptu performance of “The Owl and the Pussycat”.

Yolanda Guns, Arts Coordinator from Ching-ford Foundation School, who organised the event, also presented several poems.

After the event, Yolanda said “I'm really pleased that you were able to let us use the library for the Poetry Evening. I knew it would be the perfect venue and it was!”

T he Department of Health has just announced that it has awarded Haven House Children’s Hospice £464,000, as part of a £60million boost to hos-

pices across England. The Woodford Green hospice, which bid for the

funds last year, has already submitted a planning applica-tion to Waltham Forest Council, with the hope that it will be able to create an annexe to the current building at The White House in Mallinson Park, Woodford Green.

There is no confirmed date for works to commence until planning consent has been approved. However if successful, the new annexe will create additional space to provide a broader range of specialist services for all those who use the hospice, as well as allowing Haven House to provide support for increased numbers of local life-limited children.

The total cost for the building works exceeds the Department of Health funding and is currently estimated at £699,000.

Mike Palfreman, Chief Executive of the hospice, said of the award; ‘This really is an amazing boost for our 10th birthday year and will enable us to provide vital additional activities and a more comprehensive care programme for the local children and families we sup-port.’

Plans for the new building will include: New consultation facilities for clinicians (from Great

Ormond Street Children’s Hospital for example) to meet with local life-limited children closer to where they live

Increased meeting space for training and support for parents

A dedicated room for music and other therapy work (at present the hospice uses a sensory room for music therapy and only one thing can happen at any one time)

Additional accommodation for families to stay when their child is in the hospice

Mr Palfreman continues; ‘While this is a fantastic amount, the cost of the new annexe and other improve-ments is significantly higher than the funding we’ve received. Therefore we will still be working hard to secure additional funding for the build, in addition to the day-to-day costs of running the hospice. With this in mind, we will need the support of our local community more than ever to help us achieve these objectives.’

Speaking about the funding, Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg said, ‘Hospices help patients and their fami-lies at what can be the most difficult part of their life. This extra funding will help bring hospices up to date, so staff and volunteers can work in modern environments, helping them continue to provide wonderful support with compassion and kindness and patients will see a huge difference in the surroundings that play a consider-able part in helping them psychologically and physically.’

Haven House awarded £464,000 from Department of Health to fund new annexe

W hipps Cross Hospital Radio has won two Gold awards at the prestigious National Hospital Broadcasting Association an-

nual competition. The awards, announced at a cere-mony held in Blackpool recognise excellence in not just radio programming but also in connecting with and supporting patients in hospitals in the UK.

The local volunteer-run station, which has been broadcasting for more than 40 years at Whipps Cross University Hospital, took first place in the Best Speech category for an interview recorded at the Chingford Model Engineering Society and was also selected as the UK Hospital Station of the Year with a 15 minute compilation of highlights from the past year.

Phil Hughes, station manager, commented: “The station award is really for everyone who contributes to patient care. We provide round-the-clock bedside entertainment tailored for the Whipps Cross com-munity and we like to think we can brighten up the time patients spend with us. We make great efforts to visit and chat to patients and the radio service can become a good friend while they are with us. Smiling really does help recovery and we try to contribute to the high standards of care set at the hospital”

Barts Health Medical Director Dr Steve Ryan said: “I am delighted that the hard work of the Whipps Cross Hospital Radio team has been recognised by this national award. The team, who all give their time and energy voluntarily, makes such a difference to our patients’ experience. We know that patients who are happy and relaxed in their surroundings recover more quickly, and the music, companionship and good humour provided by the hospital radio team go a very long way in achieving that.”

Station chairman, Ian Betteridge added: “As a charity it means a lot to be recognised for what we do and it’s wonderful to pick up these awards. Our

service not only provides music but we also feature our own football commentaries from Leyton Orient and West Ham as well as local musicians, interviews, short stories, poems and public service health infor-mation. We try to provide an all-round entertain-ment service and these awards recognise our suc-cess in doing that.”

The station began in 1969 and provides 24 hour programming from studios in the basement of the hospital. With almost 50 volunteers it is one of the longest-running stations in the region.

Phil described the unique challenges faced by a hospital radio presenter in planning a playlist: “Still top of the pops most weeks at Whipps Cross is Frank Sinatra’s - My Way, which is odd as the open-ing lyric runs: ‘And now the end is near, and so I face the final curtain’. There are quite a few records with pitfalls for the unwary presenter: Love is Like Oxy-gen, The Trolley Song, Heartbeat, Achy Breaky Heart and I Chest Called To Say I Love You. But of course the station loves playing any records by The Cure!”

Whipps Cross Hospital Radio Wins National Awards

ABOUT WHIPPS CROSS HOSPITAL RADIO Whipps Cross Hospital Radio is a registered charity which receives no funding and is run entirely by vol-unteers – currently 47. Most have full time jobs and a number have professional broadcasting backgrounds. It has been active since 1969 when it started in a leaking garden shed in the grounds of the hospital.

The station provides a 24-7 bespoke radio service – live in the evenings and at weekends (using auto-mation at other times}, via the Hospedia bedside entertainment consoles. The output is also broadcast on speakers in waiting areas and receptions around the hospital. The programmes generally play relaxing, middle-of-the-road music and include traditional re-quest shows but also shows presented live from wards. There is a full football commentary service from the main local teams at West Ham and Leyton

Orient and member Jay Barnett has recorded a series of his own short stories (one was broadcast by Radio 4) for patients’ enjoyment.

There is an hourly network news service and a vibrant website with blogs, listen again clips and information. The station also schedules public service information about local charities and services of rele-vance to patients, local interest interviews and ses-sions with visiting live musicians.

There have been testimonials from patients who particularly found the overnight service to be a com-fort. In the age of video entertainment, there is con-siderable evidence that smiling and enjoying music is a genuine aid to recovery and hospital radio is able to provide that to patients, free. The old saying about smiling being just the tonic stands as strongly now as it did forty years ago.

The Chingford Directory

O ver the past 3 years ‘Seen on the Green’ has profiled some of the most famous people to have been born or lived in the

wonderful area of Chingford. However, there are many more who live and have lived among us who hit the headlines for reaching the top of their profes-sion.

David Beckham may be Chingford’s most famous son but there are plenty of sporting heroes who have called Chingford home. Potential sports stars of the future Ben and Sam Bolger are from our area. Ben Bolger is a professional rugby league player for Harlequins in the English ‘Super League’. Ben has also played for Saracens rugby union side and Essex County. His brother, Sam Bolger, plays for the Un-der-20s Harlequins team. Both are tipped to play for England in the future. The British Commonwealth Middleweight Champion Michael Watson has lived in Chingford. Back to football, Chingford is also home to Football World Cup winning manager Sir Alf Ramsey’s Freemasonry regalia. His Lodge, Waltham Abbey Lodge No. 2750, is based in the Chingford Masonic Hall, where he attended many times. Sir Alf’s wife donated his regalia to Chingford Masonic Hall after his death in 1999.

In the music world the DJ and “UK Garage Godfa-ther” 1 Grant Nelson was born and raised in Ching-ford. Edward ‘Eddie’ Brett, whose band the ‘Lovable Rogues’ found fame on ‘Britain’s Got Talent’, lives in Chingford. Although Seen on the Green has profiled James ‘Kenzie’ Mackenzie, the 9 other members of the hip hop group ‘Blazin’ Squad’ are from Ching-ford. When the band relaunched themselves in 2005 they used local knowledge to change their band name to ‘Friday Hill’. The ‘Larkswood Open Air Pool’, commonly known as Chingford Lido, saw over 300,000 people a year go through its doors in the early 1960s. One of these was a young Shane Fen-ton, with his band ‘Shane Fenton and the Fentones’, who went on to become Alvin Stardust. Alvin says he was taken there by Mick Jagger who called it ‘his favourite place in London in the summer’.

While ‘Seen on the Green’ has written about James Alexandrou, there are many other famous actors and actresses who live and have lived in Chingford. Daniella Westbrook is another ‘Eastenders’ star who lives in the area. Patsy Smart, the star of ‘Upstairs, Downstairs’, was born and raised in Chingford, and Jack Watling, a British film stalwart who starred in Goodbye Mr Chips and The Demi-Paradise opposite Sir Laurence Olivier, was also born in Chingford. Along with actors, Chingford

has wonderfully talented writers including Jill Bark-lem who illustrates and writes the ‘Brambly Hedge’ book series. In years passed Chingford was also home to England’s greatest poet, Sir Alfred Lord Tennyson, who lived here for a short time before moving to High Beech in 1837 where he lived until 1840.

In a category all to himself is Lord Baden-Powell, the founder of the scouts and girl guides, and first ‘Chief Scout of the World’. The scout movement bought Gilwell Park, in Chingford, Essex at the time, in 1919. Although Lord Baden-Powell never lived there he emphasized the crucial role Gilwell Park played in advancing the Scout movement. When knighted in 1929 he chose to be known as ‘Lord Baden-Powell of Gilwell’ in honour of “the heart of the international scouts in Chingford” 2. Another internationally known figure is Chris Barltrop who was born and raised in Chingford, and was the Ring-master for the Moscow State Circus.

Along with the famous there are the infamous. Highwayman Dick Turpin had a hide-out in Epping Forest and robbed at least 4 houses in Chingford in 1734, though there is no evidence he lived here. Other notorious criminals include the Kray brothers - Ronnie, Reggie and Charlie - who are all buried in Chingford Mount Cemetery with their beloved mum, Violet Lee.

Over the last three years ‘Seen on the Green’ has profiled many of the most talented and high profile people to have been born, raised and lived in Ching-ford. Now we look to the future to see who else from our area will see success or hit the headlines. We hope you will see many more highly successful people that you can meet in the Mount or will have Seen on the Green!

The Chingford Directory

A fter almost 6 months of cold, wintery weather summer has arrived. This usually heralds the start of numerous mindless, action filled sum-mer blockbusters. However, this year we have a wide range of films

from family to horror movies on the big screen. Unfortunately they are not that great but at least you’ll have more time to relax in that summer sun now that it’s finally here. Enjoy!

Released: 3rd May - Chimpanzee If a review could solely be based on cinematography then this would be 5 star - it is stunning. The plot came from filmmakers following a group of chimpan-zees in the rainforest. On a simple level we follow a young chimp who be-comes an orphan only to be adopted by the alpha male of the group. How-ever, the visuals take you into the film and the positive messages about life itself make this a lovely movie.

29th May - The Big Wedding This is a classic case where an all star cast does not make for an all star film. Robert De Niro, Diane Keaton, Susan Sarandon, Robin Williams and many more A-listers labour through a movie that wants to be an English wedding comedy. The plot revolves around a long divorced couple’s adopted son getting married. But they have to fake being married so as not to offend the biological mother. There are few jokes and even less laughs.

7th June - The Iceman This is a fascinating crime drama based on the life of notorious Mafia hitman Richard Kuklinski. Between 1948 and 1986 Kuklinski murdered up to 250 peo-ple for the Gambino crime family whilst keeping up a friendly, suburban facade. When finally arrested his wife and family knew nothing of his psychopathic other life. So the movie’s content is certainly engaging but the film making has misfired trying to shoehorn this into another ‘Goodfellas’, making this intriguing but boring.

28th June - This Is The End A comedy from the ‘Judd Apatow studio’ starring Seth Rogen, James Franco and many other stars as themselves. Quite literally this time. The world’s biggest comedians are ‘off duty’ at a party in Hollywood when the end of the world occurs. They must then survive and stay alive against some of the movie busi-nesses biggest stars including Emma Watson. The first half of the film is inventive and funny but the rest is a slow let down.

DVDs to please The BAFTA and Academy Award winners are released on DVD and Blu-Ray so you can see what the ‘experts’ thought are the best films of 2013. The Impossible (6th May on DVD rrp: £14.99 and Blu-Ray rrp: £19.99) is an emotional roller-coaster focusing on a British family who survived the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami. DJango Unchained (20th May DVD rrp: £11.99 and Blu-Ray rrp: £18.99) won the Best Screen-play Oscar and while very violent is story-telling at its best. Academy Award-nominated Flight (3rd June on DVD rrp: £9.99 and Blu-Ray rrp: £14.99) is a thrilling drama about an airline pilot who becomes a hero but the attention reveals his dark secrets. Lincoln (10th June on DVD rrp: £14.99 and Blu-Ray rrp: £19.99) is all about Daniel Day Lewis’ Oscar-winning Best Actor performance and not to be missed. Enjoy!
