The future’s bright here After a busy day, or a lovely walk what would be better than popping in to this lovely country pub in the centre of the village, situated beneath the majestic Tyndale Monument, North Nibley.
Danny Chamberlain in his third year here, is keen to welcome you, your friends, family and dogs. Jenga and board games are available to borrow during a visit to keep everyone occupied! He and the expanding team are seeing a regular clientele of locals, walkers and many of those who have visited the area return to The Black Horse to stay as guests once again. The five letting rooms are ensuite and are often booked by regular business people who are back in the area for a night or two. The pretty breakfast room also offers extra dining space on busy occasions in the evenings.
As the summer approaches the garden is prepared with new benches and umbrellas offering a pleasant outdoor area. And Danny’s mother is putting on her popular afternoon Cream Teas as she did last year.
Freshly made specials are made daily from locally sourced suppliers and businesses where possible, offering delicious favourites like homemade Pie of the Day or Lasagne al forno, with other more unusual choices such as Cajun spiced steak with sauté new potatoes or Panfried duck, crushed new potatoes with plum chutney. The Chef’s cheesecake is freshly made as are the other desserts.
The lunchtime menu example, Cajun chicken, or Fish cakes & salad or Scampi and chips is from 12 midday - 3pm 2 Main dishes for £10, or 2 Mains & 2 Puddings for £16.
In the autumn, Danny is hosting a wedding for 24 in the daytime and 60 for the evening, working together with some other local businesses to make it a personal and unique day for the couple. He is happy to hold functions, where the whole bar and dining space can be booked for private parties and special occasions. Just pop in or give Danny a call and he will be happy to make arrangements with you.

Welcome to a lovely June edition. This is hopefully a month when we can make the most of getting out into our gardens not only to work in them but for some wonderful relaxation, some people (including me) would say they are one and the same as gar-dening can be wonderfully therapeu-tic. I also love looking around plant nurseries and garden centres and we feature one particular nursery in Miserden (on pages 26-27) where Julie and Steve Dolphin have recently taken over. Well worth a visit not only for the wonderful selection of plants but to see the old 1920’s glass-houses and vineries.
Fingers crossed for a flaming June! Best Wishes Catherine

STEAMED UP DOUBLE GLAZING?Don’t replace the Frames... just the Panes!
Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Paul Spiller feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although
that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service Stroud and the surrounding valleys and
Paul is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family
of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Paul a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

As Stroud Plumbing Limited, I have as a regular and longstanding advertiser in 'The Five
Valleys Directory" always been satisfied with the help that I have received, and more
importantly the response that I have gained from the magazine itself. I would have no
reservation recommending the magazine to other small businesses (as long as they are
not too similar to my own of course ) and feel sure that they would get a regular response
as have I. The 'Five Valleys Directory' is currently one of my preferred advertising tools.
With Thanks Andrew Barnard, Stroud Plumbing
Thank you for putting together my advert each month as it is now my prime source of
work. So keep up the good work! Denis Morris Handyman.

Where were you brought up?
I was brought up in Gloucester. I went to Calton Road Junior School and then Linden Secondary Modern School. My favourite lesson at school was Art. I enjoyed school and from there went to study Graphic Design at the Gloucestershire col-lege of Art and Design. When did you develop an interest in photography?
I have always had an interest in photography and bought my first camera when I was eighteen. I have always loved portraits, whether painted or photographed. Every face is different and it is a skill to capture the personality through the lens.
My favourite gallery in London is The National Portrait Gallery. Wedding photography is an exciting challenge. The ability to capture the enjoyment of the day, without being too prescriptive, is a skill in itself.

Being able to relate to people is es-sential, in order to make the day special, without being too intrusive. How long have you lived in Stroud?
I moved to Stroud sixteen years ago, when I married. We have a nine year old daughter. I love Stroud and the artistic feel of the area.
There are so many creative people in Stroud, which gives it, it’s unique and friendly atmosphere.
I count myself lucky living in the Cotswolds, as we are surrounded by some of the most beautiful countryside in England. Hobbies and Interests.
Apart from photography, I enjoy art galleries, cinema, reading and listening to music. Any ambitions?
Apart from perfecting my photography, I would like to visit Monets garden in France. A few years ago, we went to New England. I would love to go back there as it was so beautiful, especially in the Fall.
There are so many wonderful places in the world, just waiting to be photographed.

A bad website, or no online presence at all, could be costing your company potential business.
The internet is the first thing most people consult when they’re looking for a service or product and if your company is not online, or has a website that looks out of date or isn’t accessible to mobile phones and tablets, then a business opportunity could quickly be lost.
Computancy has had a busy year building websites for businesses that want their information to be easily accessible on all the latest devices. Drawing on over 10 years’ experience in website design, search engine optimisation and web hosting services to assist small and medium-sized businesses in Gloucestershire and beyond.
“A website is now such an important part of a business that your customers simply expect you to have one,” says Computancy’s owner Nick Warner. “It is the first place they will look when searching for your goods, products or services and no matter
how pristine your premises and staff are, if this isn’t reflected in your website they may go elsewhere.”
Since April the search engine Google has actively penalised websites that are not mobile and tablet friendly, explains Nick. “Most websites more than 3 years old were not designed for the modern mobile ways of viewing them” he says.
“Our service doesn’t stop at building your website. It needs to be hosted on a fast webserver so that it is always available and we have secure and reliable webservers in London’s Docklands. Then it needs to be optimised so your customers can quickly find you on Google or Bing, and we offer flexible SEO plans for all budgets”
Based locally in Bisley, Computancy offer a full range of web design services, including graphic design and copywriting support and take pride in undertaking work quickly and efficiently and at competitive prices. ”

A nursery near Stroud which offers a wide range of beauti-ful plants is looking forward to a blossoming future with the arrival of new owners.
Julie Dolphin and husband Steve took over Miserden Nursery earlier this year. They decided to go ahead with the venture after falling in love with the nursery’s stunning village setting and its unique and quality range of herbaceous per-ennials, many of which are grown on site.
But it wasn’t just the plants that caught the couple’s imagination. They also became hooked after seeing the nursery’s five glasshouses and two viner-ies, all of which were built in the 1920s and these days are used to grow from seed and overwinter many of the perennials.
“It was a lovely sunny day when we first visited the nursery. As soon as we arrived, we were taken aback by its amazing glasshouses and vineries. There’s a real atmosphere of a bygone age here,” said Julie, a former Gloucestershire journalist who took her RHS qualifications before working as a horticultural researcher on the BBC Two programme Gardeners’ World.
Not only does the nursery sell a wide range of perennials, it also offers David Austin roses, shrubs, climbers, ferns, scented and regal pelargoni-ums and a large and select range of summer bedding.
Steve, who has swapped corporate life for the nursery, added: “We have been given a terrifically warm welcome by both customers old and new. The
residents in the village of Miserden have also been incredibly supportive. “We are very excited about the future of the nursery. Over the last 20 years it has careful-ly established a reputation for top quality, supplying hardy plants that are used to the local climate. Our ambition is to build on that foundation.”

Eastcombe Gnome Hunt Saturday 2nd & Sunday 3rd July 2016 2.00pm – 5.00pm
We are once again dusting and polishing our gnomes ready to invade the picturesque village of Eastcombe for the 7th annual Gnome Hunt.
The Gnome Hunt is a family event, following a trail around the beautiful village and gardens of Eastcombe to track down hidden gnomes. As well as enjoying the merry art of Gnome spotting, we are very pleased to be able to showcase the delightful houses, gardens and surrounding countryside in Eastcombe.
The event starts at Eastcombe Primary School where there will be stalls and games in the playground and finish at the Village Hall for cream teas - worth a visit even if you don’t plan on hunting down any gnomes!
The trail is very pushchair friendly with ice creams available en-route. Participants are invited to find the gnomes, collect the clues and solve the puzzle to win a gnome to take home and keep!
The Gnome Hunt is organised by Eastcombe School Association to raise funds for the small village primary school. Last year the hunt raised over £3200 which was spent on educational outdoor equipment to enhance outside learning. We welcomed over 1000 Gnome hunters last year to our lovely village and we hope to exceed that this year!

Put simply, panic attacks are a result of anxiety accumulated in the ‘Stress Bucket’. This is a metaphor for the area of the brain known as the hippocampus, which contains all of our sometimes inappropriate responses and templates. You can think of this as how we respond to things on a subconscious level.
It’s not the triggers that leave us feeling stressed, which are the problem. It’s the thought processes we go through, which surround that events or actions of our lives. Studies suggest that stress is a huge factor in the onset of panic & anxiety attacks. You can imagine the ‘Stress Bucket’ overflowing, whenever we put too much in there. That’s why it can happen in a moment when nothing significant happens. It all depends on what is in the Bucket already.
The Panic Attack itself is really just a provocation of the fight, flight or freeze response, which is there to safeguard us against dangerous situations. That’s why we can’t get rid of it entirely, and it is very much a feature of normal brain function.
Even this metaphor can be seen in two different ways. It’s not pleasant to take the view that the bucket will always be too limited, and we will therefore always be on the edge of a panic attack. This example in itself could cause anxiety if we believed it! On the other hand, we can see the stress bucket is a good thing. It allows us to absorb a certain amount of negativity without it being an issue.
A User’s Guide to a Healthy Mind
Professional Solution Focused Hypnosis & Book an Initial Consultation
So what can be done about it? Hypnotherapy can help you to reduce the amount that you are putting in your bucket, and get you to instead focus on the positive aspects of life. Over time this approach builds patterns in the brain that support a more desirable way of thinking. When we get more positive in life, regularly going in for positive thought, positive interaction, and positive activity, then the ‘Stress Bucket’ will have chance to empty. This occurs through a natural process called REM sleep. Once we again operate with an empty bucket, we have huge benefit in practically all areas of life. To find out more and to understand how with Hypnotherapy it can be possible to get over panic attacks for good using the right kind of positive thought, actions and interactions, get in touch with Liane or Sam at Changes Welcome today.....

Mental health awareness week happened a few weeks ago and Vanilla Moon thought it would be good to raise some awareness of ways to improve you mental wellbe-ing. Stress, depression and anxiety are all conditions that effect even the strongest of people. They can lead to a variety of wider health issues as well as time away from work and social withdrawal too. However, the best thing to re-member is that no matter how you may feel there are things that you can do to improve your mental wellbeing and get yourself back on the road to happiness. The NHS offer some fantastic advice and tips on approaches you can take to help your mental wellbeing on their page http://www.nhs.uk/conditions/stress-anxiety-depression/pages/improve-mental-wellbeing.aspx and we have taken 3 of the simplest ones to share with you. Be social We have already mentioned how low mental wellbeing can result in the desire to shut yourself away from the world around you; but this can make the situation even worse. Studies have shown that with a network of good relationships; whether that is with family, friends or even your wider community and neighbours is great for our mental wellbeing. Learn more Learning new skills can have a great positive impact on your mental wellbeing. Learning doesn’t necessarily have to mean gaining an education or qualification, it can simply refer to new skills or life experiences instead. By continuing to learn as an adult you will be likely to feel great about yourself as well as connect with people who have similar interests as you. Reaching a target (such as learning to cook or perhaps mastering a new instrument) not only is a boost to your self-esteem and self-confidence but it also can give you a real sense of achievement too! Give back Giving back to those around you doesn’t necessarily mean volunteering, it can also be a small act such as smiling at strangers or even just passing on some kind words. If you do want to have a larger impact, then you can of course decide to give some time to a local community project. In doing this you will really improve your sense of purpose, leading to you feeling much more satisfied with your life and ultimately happier. You are in charge of your own wellbeing Whilst many of us think of our wellbeing as what we have (money, property, cars, clothes, our job) the truth is that the things we do, the way we think and the people we have around us are the biggest factors to feeling great. So make sure that you take the chance to really enjoy your life and spend some time with those who really matter!
Remember if you have concerns about your mental wellbeing speak to your GP

Stroud Hypnotherapy Practice Celebrates its Second Year The Stroud Hypnotherapy Practice is proud to be celebrating its second birthday this month following a highly successful launch in May 2014. The Practice continues to go from strength to strength with the two founding members Michèle Lazarus and Alex Brounger being joined this year by a third Hypnotherapist, Shaun Barker. Shaun was carefully selected from a number of interested hypnotherapists and was chosen for his commitment to high standards, enthusiasm and professionalism. Shaun became a hypnotherapist after a highly successful military career. Like Michèle and Alex, Shaun trained at the Clifton Practice Hypnotherapy Training School (CPHT) in Bristol and has achieved his Hypnotherapy Practitioner Diploma (HPD) which is widely regarded as the gold standard qualification in hypnotherapy.
The Stroud Hypnotherapy Practice operates from the Cotswold Health Centre on George Street right in the centre of Stroud and provides the very best standards of hypnotherapy and psychotherapy in the area. The Practice was originally set up to ensure that clients could be confident of accessing the very best that hypnotherapy has to offer by coming to one of their therapists.
It continues to achieve this aim whilst also working towards debunking many of the myths that surround hypnotherapy. Modern day hypnotherapy, and solution focused hypnotherapy in particular, uses the entirely natural state of trance, as a very powerful tool to help us learn helpful ways of thinking, taking action and having positive interactions. In modern day hypnotherapy, hypnosis is just one tool we use to assist clients overcome issues or help them cope better with the problems they are facing in their lives.
Michèle Lazarus said she has been very proud of the success of the clinic and in particular the number of people the Practice has been able to help over the last two years in so many different areas .
Practice owner, Alex Brounger, a Hypnotherapy Supervisor and Senior Lecturer for CPHT, reiterated the Practice’s commitment to the very highest standards of practice whilst also reinforcing the message that modern hypnotherapy is very different from the old fashioned stereotype: “modern hypnotherapy has a strong evidence base within neuroscience research and when used in the right way it can be enormously powerful in helping individuals make the changes they want or need to make in their lives.”
All three hypnotherapists are members of the AfSFH, the NCH and the CNHC. If you are interested in finding out more please visit SHP’s website: www.stroudhypnotherapy.com or call the Cotswold Health Centre on: 01453 767600.

EVERYBODY’S GOT A BOOK IN THEM
We’ve printed books on local history, novels, illustrated children’s books, guides, and even personal books perfect for recording family stories for future generations.
With modern printing methods we can print and produce as few or as many as you would like. We offer advice on how to prepare your book for print or we can design your book for you. We also offer advice on paper, the best binding technique and even marketing your book.
But before we print anything we talk, so if you have a story to tell call David Pealing on 01452 416391 or email [email protected] and let’s make your book a reality.
@severnprintwww.severnprint.co.uk 01452 416391
We all have stories to tell, the pity is that so many go unheard.
