...we make saving money perfectly clear...

STEAMED UP DOUBLE GLAZING?Don’t replace the Frames... just the Panes!

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Paul Spiller feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although

that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service Stroud and the surrounding valleys and

Paul is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family

of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Paul a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Primary School &Little Lambs Nursery

Sheepscombe Primary School provides ‘memorable learning opportunities and pupils benefit from an exciting

curriculum’ as stated in the recent (April 2014) Ofsted report which gave the school a

‘Good ‘judgement. We are proud of the fact that pupils behaviour and attitudes to learning are

‘often exemplary’.

We believe that values underpin all that we do withchildren and parents as well as the wider community.

Respect for one another is key as is trust and co-operation. We value the children as individuals

whilst ensuring that they know we care for them and want to develop their own personal potential.

We are very proud of our links with theNational Trust Ebworth Estate. We work

closely with the National Trust wardens to planprojects and activities. Each class regularly

walks up to Ebworth and uses the Yurt as a classroom.

Mrs Bennion is an accredited Forest Leaderand all our teachers relish the opportunity to

take the curriculum outdoors.

On ‘Fish Wednesday’ pupils enjoya hot lunch cooked at the Butchers

Arms and served in school by parentvolunteers. Vegetarian alternativesare available. Through the winter, arota of parents is drawn up to bakepotatoes and bring them in for the

children on a Thursday.

Where were you born and brought up? I was born at Gloucester Royal and lived in Far Oakridge with my parents, sister and grandparents. I was very lucky being brought up in a village location, which you don’t always appreciate at the time! I attended the local primary school in Oakridge Lynch and from there went to Thomas Keble secondary school. I was a prefect at school, a Girl Guide, and a Young Leader for France Lynch Brownies

What did you do after you left school? I was only 15 when I left school, being an August baby, so continued my education at Cirencester College for two years, followed by a fur-ther two years at GLOSCAT. Through my college work placement I was very fortunate in becoming a permanent member of staff at Zur-ich Financial Services.

What led you into the business you are in now? At the age of 21 I applied for a secretarial job at Philip Ford and Son, Funeral Directors. This was not a profession that I had ever planned to work in - at 21 it’s not something you think about very much but I very soon appreciated it’s value and decided that this was where I wanted to stay. I had been with the company for a year when the owners took the decision to sell their business to Dignity Funerals. This gave me the opportunity to progress to being a Funeral Arranger where I had more direct contact with families and a more practical role in helping them. After a while I decided that I wanted to progress to being a

Funeral Director. Dignity supported me in gaining the NAFD (National Association of Funeral Directors) Certificate in Funeral Directing – a two year course! – after which I took on the new role. I have been with the company ten years this year and have just received my long service award. I have also recently been promoted to Funeral Manager. Why do you like your job? Helping people at such a difficult time in their lives is enormous-ly rewarding – especially as I live in the community that I help - I’m not remote from what I’m doing. I will sometimes see clients when I am out shopping and have a chat with them. That local link is important to me. When we receive words of appreciation from our clients, we know that our role has been worthwhile. It means a lot. There’s no other work quite like it. It’s not always easy, but it’s always rewarding. What we do in a day has, we hope, made someone’s life a little easier.

What are you interests and hobbies? Outside of work I have a busy family life. I have a son who is two years old this Christmas and I love to spend my time with him; but for ‘me time’ I enjoy going to aqua aerobics once a week.

What plans do have for the future? That’s a good question - I’m not even sure what I’m having for tea tonight! I’d very much like to develop my role within the company. My current promotion has allowed me to be involved in staff training and it’s a pleasant surprise to find that I’ve gained a lot of knowledge that I’m now able to pass on to other people. Looking far ahead I’d like to be able to be a manager for a wider area with more responsibilities for staff. My only con-cern is that I would never want to move completely away from meeting our clients and conducting funerals. I think that you can be an effective manager if you don’t lose touch with the basics of the job. That’s very much the case in the funeral profession because helping people is the beginning and the end of it.

When we are ill or in pain and seek-ing expert medical help, we rightly expect doctors and others who

treat us to be properly trained and qualified. But what about healers who work outside the framework of conventional medicine, such as acupuncturists, homeopaths or reflexolo-gists? How can we be sure they have right training and qualifications and meet the kind of standards we would expect from health professionals?

This is a subject close to my heart. Since 2001 I have studied and practised as a tradi-tional acupuncturist. As a registered member of the British Acupuncture Council (BAcC), I run clinics in Stroud, Cheltenham and Newent, treating patients for a range of condi-tions and ailments. Before qualifying, I took a three-year degree course at the College of Traditional Acupuncture in Leamington, fol-lowed by two years’ postgraduate study. I still take part in training and professional devel-opment every year – it’s something I have to do in order to receive the all-important BAcC stamp of approval.

As someone schooled in classical ‘Five Element’ acupuncture, I’m particularly concerned about the spread of treatments commonly known as ‘Western Medical Acu-puncture’ and ‘Myofascial Trigger Point Acupuncture (also known as ‘dry needling acupuncture’). These are widely practised by

doctors, nurses, physiotherapists and midwives within the NHS. They are described as a form of acupuncture, but while the practitioners are medically trained, most have little knowledge of, or training in, the principles which underlie traditional Chinese acupuncture.

Dry needling v. acupunctureI was originally drawn to acupuncture because it treats the whole person. In the right hands, it is painless and effective – a highly sophisti-cated form of medicine that is recognised and practised throughout the world.

In traditional Chinese medicine, the symptoms we feel when we are ill, such as a sore throat or a swollen gland, are a sign that the body is out of balance. Acupuncturists aim to correct the imbalance and encour-age the body’s natural healing mechanisms. This is done by inserting ultra-fine needles at special points located along channels called ‘meridians’ which carry vital energy, called ‘Qi’, throughout the body.

‘Dry needling’ is a recent development that is used alongside disciplines such as physiotherapy, and within the framework of a Western-style medical diagnosis. Usually billed as a treatment for headaches or muscle pain, it involves inserting a needle into a ‘trigger point’, a tender spot in a tight band of muscle which causes pain when pressed or squeezed. This creates an entirely different

With so many rival forms of ‘alternative therapy’ available, it is important to beware of imitations, says Pam Everitt.

… But Is It Acupuncture?

Page 33: Five valleys directory November 2014

33needling experience for the patient and bears no resemblance to the feeling created by a tra-ditional acupuncturist. Dry needling does not seek to regulate Qi or address the underlying imbalance that caused the symptoms to arise.

Of course, dry needling has its support-ers, and quite a few people claim to have been helped by it. I do not doubt that certain forms of dry needling can be effective – but it isn’t acu-puncture as I understand and practise it. And if you are only having dry needling, you’re missing out on most of what a registered acu-puncturist has to offer. Let me explain.

The holistic approachFor me, each patient is unique – so while the ailment and the symptoms may be identi-cal, the form of treatment I offer is different in every case. During a first consultation, I spend up to an hour taking a complete medi-cal history, carefully building up a picture of the patient’s constitution. I then carry out a detailed examination of the patient’s tongue and pulses (acupuncturists are trained to read 6 pulses on each wrist, and identify up to 28 individual qualities). All this is vital in help-ing me decide which points to treat.

Patients are often surprised that the needles are not always inserted at the spot where they feel the pain or discomfort. This is because energy meridians range throughout the body. For example, if you suffer from headaches, I may decide to treat you by inserting needles in your foot or hand. In dry needling, the needle is always inserted directly into the affected part. It may seem a relatively minor point, but it illustrates a fundamental difference between the two types of treatment.

Treating causes, not symptomsSo does acupuncture offer something more than dry needling? Absolutely. Dry needling may bring temporary relief, but often the pain returns because the underlying cause has not been properly addressed according to tradi-tional acupuncture principles.

It’s worth remembering that a physi-otherapist, for example, who wants to train in dry needling may only study for 80 hours: just enough to gain understanding of how to ‘needle the point that hurts’ and perhaps deliver some short-term symptom relief. In contrast, my undergraduate studies alone consisted of 3,500 hours of study.

Let the patient bewareSo what is the answer? Many BAcC members are calling for changes in the law to make it illegal for dry needlers to call themselves acupuncturists. (Back in the early 1990s, osteopaths faced a similar threat from rival types of therapy; eventually legislation was brought in to protect the term osteopathy.) In the meantime, patients need to be wary. The description ‘acupuncture’ currently covers both dry needling and traditional Chinese acupuncture, but although there are superfi-cial similarities, the differences between the two types of treatment are vast.

The end of October not only signals Halloween but also the descent into the darker nights as the clocks go back one hour on the last weekend of month ten. It is also about this time thatwe shut the door fully on our summer clothes and get out those woollies, and grab for our hankies. The change from the warm weather to one that sends shivers down your spine can bring about a dramatic change, to not only your health, but your wellbeing too.

But don’t despair. There are plenty of ways to keep those winter blues at bay so you can continue to wear your summer smile throughout the toughest of seasons.

As soon as the weather begins to cool down, households tend to draw their curtains and stay home. In the winter the sun does still shine and although it is not as warm as in the other seasons, it can still bring about some much needed vitamin D. Not only will your body continue to top up those vitamin levels, the fresh air will clear away those cobwebs and get the blood pumping. So instead of diving under the duvet, get those train-ers on and get yourself out and about.

Not every winter turns out to include a belated burst of scorching sunshine and it is the sudden change in temperature that can bring down our mood and our immune levels. There is no need to turn the heating up to full power until you have to. Ensuring you are wrapped up warm - always wear socks - and have to hand a blanket or throw to keep the chill away, will let your body slowly adjust to the drop in temperature. It will also stop those germs from multiplying at a rapid pace. Reduce the need for chilled drinks - remembering to still top up your water levels - and replace them with warm drinks. Salads don’t need to step aside just serve as a side dish alongside your favourite foods that are fit for winter. Now winter is here is doesn’t mean that you can forget about your 5-a-day, it just means new and exciting choices have been added to the list. Why not pop on a nice veg casserole that will warm you from the inside out?

Just because the weather has turned grey and black outside, doesn’t mean your wardrobe needs to match! Winter is the ideal time to splash a bit of colour. It is also not just limited to your wardrobe. Why not add some colourful cushions to your bed or sofa? Or how about treatinbg yourself to a brand new hair colour to liven up those lack lustre locks.

So enjoy winter and create your own sunshine to brighten up the next few months!

We all have stories to tell, the pity is that some go unnoticedand unprinted. We’ve been printing books for some time now.In the past few years we’ve done them on local history, novels, illustrated children’s books, guides, and family books that are perfect for recording close family stories. These have been as few as 20 copies.

With modern printing methods we can now print and produce just a few copies. These are ideal if you’d like to try your idea on the mainstream publishers, or just for those few exclusive people who you may like to write for.

Not only can we print your book, but we can advise you on the best way to prepare it for print, or we can do the whole of the design and artwork for you from scratch. We advise on the best binding methods for the books as well as suggestions for marketing, and we can even build you a simple website for it too.

Before we print we talk. So if you have a story to tell and you want to get it into print call me: Paul Davies, on 01452 300158 and lets make your book a reality.

Everybody’s got a book in them.

THE BRIEF

CONSTRUCT A BRIDGE OUT OF SPAGHETTI, STRONG

ENOUGH TO SUPPORT A 250G BAG OF SUGAR.

MATERIALS

Spaghetti, small rubber bands or bag

ties, sticky tape.

THE METHOD

Think about bracing strands together

for strength.

Some shapes are better

at absorbing loads –

triangles are particularly

strong.

Rubber bands make for

good junctions.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

Bridges manage two important forces:

compression and tension – pushing

and pulling.

Too much of either and they buckle

or snap.

Through trial and error,

you’ll become profi cient at

working with spaghetti.

THE BRIEF

USE A CARDBOARD BOX AND CARDBOARD STRUTS TO CREATE

A MARBLE RUN. THE MARBLE MUST RUN FOR 60 SECONDS.

MATERIALS

Large cardboard box, cardboard

struts, sticky tape, marbles,

scissors (with adult supervision).

THE METHOD

If you can’t fi nd cardboard struts,

you can make your own by folding

four inch strips of cardboard in half to

create a V shape.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

To help you to control the time your

marble takes to run its course you’ll

need to consider a few factors:

POTENTIAL ENERGY

= MASS x GRAVITY x HEIGHT

The heavier your marble, and higher

your slope the more energy your

marble will have.

FRICTION

The rougher or stickier

the surface, the slower

your marble will travel.

ANGLE OF THE SLOPE

The less steep the angle of

the slope, the longer the marble

will take to reach the bottom.

THE BRIEF

CREATE A COLOURFUL UNDERWATER VOLCANO.

MATERIALS

String, scissors (with

adult supervision), an

empty salt shaker, a

large jar, food colouring.

THE METHOD

Cut a two foot length of string with a pair of

scissors. Tie a knot around the neck of a salt

shaker with one end of the string. Double-knot it

to ensure the knot is secure. Repeat this process

with the other end of the string, resulting in a

handle to lower your shaker.

Empty and clean a large jar. Fill the clean jar

about three quarters full with cold water.

Fill the salt shaker with hot water (with adult

supervision) – as hot as you can get from your

tap – to just below the neck. Add three to four

drops of red food colouring.

Hold your salt shaker over the mouth of the jar by

the string handle. Slowly lower the salt shaker

into the jar until the shaker is completely

submerged and resting upright on the bottom of

the jar. Observe how the coloured water erupts

from the shaker into the cold water.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

This shows how convection currents work.

A convection current is the way that heat

rises and falls in liquids and gases.

Hot air balloons

use convection

currents. As hot air

rises, so too does

the balloon.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

To help you to control the time your

marble takes to run its course you’ll

need to consider a few factors:

POTENTIAL ENERGY

= MASS x GRAVITY x HEIGHT

The heavier your marble, and higher

your slope the more energy your

marble will have.

FRICTION

The rougher or stickier

the surface, the slower

your marble will travel.

ANGLE OF THE SLOPE

The less steep the angle of

the slope, the longer the marble

will take to reach the bottom.

THE BRIEF

CREATE A COLOURFUL UNDERWATER VOLCANO.

MATERIALS

String, scissors (with

adult supervision), an

empty salt shaker, a

large jar, food colouring.

THE METHOD

Cut a two foot length of string with a pair of

scissors. Tie a knot around the neck of a salt

shaker with one end of the string. Double-knot it

to ensure the knot is secure. Repeat this process

with the other end of the string, resulting in a

handle to lower your shaker.

Empty and clean a large jar. Fill the clean jar

about three quarters full with cold water.

Fill the salt shaker with hot water (with adult

supervision) – as hot as you can get from your

tap – to just below the neck. Add three to four

drops of red food colouring.

Hold your salt shaker over the mouth of the jar by

the string handle. Slowly lower the salt shaker

into the jar until the shaker is completely

submerged and resting upright on the bottom of

the jar. Observe how the coloured water erupts

from the shaker into the cold water.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

This shows how convection currents work.

A convection current is the way that heat

rises and falls in liquids and gases.

Hot air balloons

use convection

currents. As hot air

rises, so too does

the balloon.
