EVERYBODY’S GOT A BOOK IN THEM

We’ve printed books on local history, novels, illustrated children’s books, guides, and even personal books perfect for recording family stories for future generations.

With modern printing methods we can print and produce as few or as many as you would like. We offer advice on how to prepare your book for print or we can design your book for you. We also offer advice on paper, the best binding technique and even marketing your book.

But before we print anything we talk, so if you have a story to tell call David Pealing on 01452 416391 or email [email protected] and let’s make your book a reality.

With Easter having arrived a little earlier this year by the time you read this the holiday will be well and truly over for most of us, unless of course you have decided to make it a lovely long Easter break.

We had a good couple of days before Easter in Ludlow where just like Stroud they have a wonderful farmers market and in fact the whole place is a foodies paradise. Apart from me slipping on a marble floor when getting out of the bath (painful but luckily with no-one watching as it must have looked hilarious) we had a lovely time in our dog-friendly hotel. We do seem to have been an accident prone household over the last few months so fingers crossed that will be the last of it for a while!

Until next month……….Catherine P.s. Contents on page 4

STEAMED UP DOUBLE GLAZING?Don’t replace the Frames... just the Panes!

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Paul Spiller feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although

that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service Stroud and the surrounding valleys and

Paul is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family

of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Paul a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

This time of year I get bitten by the cleaning bug. All of a sudden an urge to scrub, dust and polish overwhelms me and I’m a woman on a mission. This year though I found myself wondering about the active ingredients in my cleaning products. Just how much damage is the chemical cocktail of my annual spring-clean-fest doing to the planet? Detergents, bleaches and degreasers have turned our homes into miniature chemical factories, full of potentially hazardous substances which can find their way into groundwater and contaminate the lakes and the oceans. Some of the main culprits are phosphates, common in laundry detergents and some cleaning products. An average consumer uses the equivalent of 30lbs of detergent a year. High phosphate levels in water cause ‘algae blooms’ which contribute to the death of fish and other water-dwelling creatures. The combination of pollutants and global warming mean these algae blooms are becoming more common. In addition to the environmental impact of our cleaning products I also discovered that they can have an adverse affect on our health. For example, household ammonia is often found in window or general glass cleaners. It is a skin and eye irritant and deadly to fish, even in low concentrations, so it’s not really ideal to be flushing it down our drains. Sodium hypochlorite (bleach) is corrosive and an eye, skin and respiratory irritant. It

is especially toxic to people with heart conditions or asthma. D-limonene is a degreasant found in citrus and orange cleaners. It is also a neurotoxin, an irritant and can cause respiratory distress. Hmmm...perhaps it’s time to familiarise ourselves with some greener alternatives. Bicarbonate of Soda is a great all round degreaser, scourer and deodoriser. Use it to clean hobs and work surfaces, deodorise the fridge and even freshen drains. Lemon juice is a useful, natural bleach. It inhibits mould growth and can be mixed with Bicarbonate of Soda to make a paste which tackles limescale. Salt is a natural disinfectant and scourer, very useful for cleaning pans. Distilled white vinegar can be used to clean toilets, windows and is great at removing limescale and general bathroom scum. Washing soda or soda crystals can be used to soften water, remove stains and clean drains. I like my modern cleaning products. They do an excellent job and I couldn’t manage without them but this year, where I can, I’m going to use more eco-friendly alternatives and make my spring clean a bit more green!

April is Stress awareness month. According to Health and Safety Executive (HSE), in 2014/15 stress was re-sponsible 9.9 million lost working days! But it’s not just the economy that suffers, and we can all do something about dealing with life’s challenges. But what can we do about all this?1. Make it challenging, but not overwhelming.Stress is not always a bad thing. The problem is not ac-tually that stress exists, but how much of it there is, how well we feel we can handle ourselves when confronted with it, and how we apply stress management techniques to use the stress as a stepping stone instead of a stum-bling block. We need to re-frame the task, so that we can feel good about the achievements we do make, instead of worrying about the ones we’re still getting round to.

3. Create a positive environment within.Human beings thrive within a community setting. This is why primitive man ex-isted in tribes and villages. We get a certain reward when we have positive interactions with others, and that reward came in the feel-good chemical that our brains produces called serotonin, which is produces when we go in for positive activity, interaction, and thought.

& Sam Little (below)

2. Ensure a proper work-life balanceThe saying “all work and no play makes jack a dull boy” is very much applicable. Without rest and recreation, we don’t have a way to empty our stress buckets, which is a metaphor used by hypnotherapists to describe the things that we’ve not yet processed. In the long run, this will stifle creativity and our ability to con-centrate and solve problems. It also causes major strain in relationships.

4. If it works, do more of itThere are lots of approaches to helping people deal with stress, including many therapies that really do offer great stress relief. But a good stress management strategy is more about making lasting changes that will help you avoid the ac-cumulation of stress in the first place. And great way to gather up the tools and habits you need to achieve this is Hypnotherapy.

Benefits of Hot Water Bottles Do you remember when your mum used to place a hot water bottle in the middle of your bed ready for bedtime? Hot water bottles are not just for warming bedsheets on a cold winter’s night, they have so many more benefits. Period Pains Most women will agree that the worst part of being a woman is the period pains they suffer every month – some worse than others. Those in the know, thanks to mothers, aunts, grandmothers, reach for a hot water bottle and hug it tight. The warmth from the hot water bottle acts in the same way as placing a hot flannel on a painful part of our bodies. Both help to take away the pain and discomfort.

Backache Back pain can be particularly painful and for regular suffers adding some heat to the afflicted areas brings some much needed relief. The heat from a hot water bottle stimulates the blood flow and encourages the healing nutrients in our body to gather around the affected area of the back.

Toothache Those who have ever had a toothache know the pain can be excruciating. Adding some heat to the cheek will help bring some relief, but don’t go put-ting a red hot water bottle straight onto your face. If possible, try using one that is covered or wrap the hot water bottle in a pillowcase – you don’t want a burnt face to add to your toothache.

Headache Like most aches the addition of heat will make all the difference. Whether your head hurts at the front, back or side holding a hot water bottle on the spot that hurts will see your pain slowly subside and hopefully disappear.

Colds A cold is one of those ailments that we will all get at least once a year but nevertheless the impact they have on our bodies is just as awful. We get cold, we get grumpy, we get grouchy, we get all sorts of awfulness but if you have a hot water bottle tucked away in the bottom of a drawer you will soon be feeling a lot more cheerful. Everyone knows that hot water bottles are little instances of warmth and when your body is feeling cold and down the dumps that warmth is more than welcome.

With everything coming to life now is an excellent time to start feeding ourplants. Established shrub borders and fruit trees would benefit from a goodmulching of Westland Gro-Sure farmyard manure. Now is a great time to be sowing seeds. Lots of annuals and vegetable plantscan be sown this month. Use a good quality seed compost or Jacks Magic multipurpose.Seed potatoes can now be planted, watch out for any late frosts and cover withfleece to protect young delicate shoots. The Garden Centre is now full with a huge range of plants. Small herbaceousplants can go in now, I recommend planting in groups of 3 for a quicker, bolderdisplay. New shrubs can fill in any gaps that you have, just remember to keepthem all watered if we have a dry spell.Lawns will be starting to grow very quickly now and will require a regular weeklycut. If moss is a problem treat with lawn sand now to kill off the moss. Amonthly feed with Miracle Gro Lawn Feed will keep your lawn a lush greencolour.

A bad website, or no online presence at all, could be costing your company potential business.

The internet is the first thing most people consult when they’re looking for a service or product and if your company is not online, or has a website that looks out of date or isn’t accessible to mobile phones and tablets, then a business opportunity could quickly be lost.

Computancy has had a busy year building websites for businesses that want their information to be easily accessible on all the latest devices. Drawing on over 10 years’ experience in website design, search engine optimisation and web hosting services to assist small and medium-sized businesses in Gloucestershire and beyond.

“A website is now such an important part of a business that your customers simply expect you to have one,” says Computancy’s owner Nick Warner. “It is the first place they will look when searching for your goods, products or services and no matter

how pristine your premises and staff are, if this isn’t reflected in your website they may go elsewhere.”

Since April the search engine Google has actively penalised websites that are not mobile and tablet friendly, explains Nick. “Most websites more than 3 years old were not designed for the modern mobile ways of viewing them” he says.

“Our service doesn’t stop at building your website. It needs to be hosted on a fast webserver so that it is always available and we have secure and reliable webservers in London’s Docklands. Then it needs to be optimised so your customers can quickly find you on Google or Bing, and we offer flexible SEO plans for all budgets”

Based locally in Bisley, Computancy offer a full range of web design services, including graphic design and copywriting support and take pride in undertaking work quickly and efficiently and at competitive prices. ”

De-Clutter

If you can’t lay your hands on items quickly because they’re buried under piles of junk; if you’re constantly moving things from one pile to a new ‘temporary’ pile; if you find yourself thinking, “I can’t throw this away, it might come in useful one day,” you’re probably a clutter victim.

Californian blogger Dave Bruno wrote The 100 Thing Challenge. He set himself the year-long experimental task of reducing his belongings to 100 items. Amazingly, once his self-imposed year was up he kept living by his new rules, citing a desire to fight American style consumerism and live a life of simplicity.

I’m not suggesting we all follow Bruno’s lead, but he has a point. Most of us put far too much time, effort and money into acquiring, keeping and storing possessions. Sometimes it’s good to let go.

If you’re ready to de-clutter, then we have a few simple tips. If you feel you need help, there are experts in de-cluttering who will guide you through the process of letting go.

De-cluttering Tips Deal with one room at a time The task will seem less daunting. Stick with that room until it’s finished.

Choose a nice day Take the room contents outside. Psychologically it’s easier to sort and let go if you’re one step removed. It’s also less likely that the clutter will make it back inside.

Sort everything into three piles Label them dump, donate and keep. Be realistic: if the item in question hasn’t been used for over a year it is unlikely you will ever use it.

Deal with the dump and donate piles

Do this before anything comes back into the house. It’s much harder to mess up your good work if the stuff is physically gone.

Sort and label Place the remaining items in clearly labelled boxes. Make sure there is one temporary box to house items which really belong in another room. As each room is sorted those items can be replaced, and other misplaced items can be housed there while the de-cluttering process continues.

Replace everything that remains The maxim ‘A place for everything and everything in its place’ is a good one. House small items in clear plastic boxes and store them in cupboards or wardrobes.

Now you’re done instigate a one thing in:one thing out rule. It will make you think twice about acquiring something if you know something else has to go.

Finally, once a week, take two bags and go through your home. One bag is for rubbish, the other for items in the wrong place. When you’ve finished throw the rubbish away and replace the misplaced items.

Follow these small steps and you too can de-clutter your life.

How to live with less

A Peek into the Past On 25th April 1953 two Cambridge University scientists published their answer to one of the most fundamental questions of biology - how do living things reproduce themselves?

James D Watson and Francis Crick described the structure of a chemical called deoxyribonucleic acid, or DNA in a in an article published in Nature magazine.

DNA is the material that makes up genes which pass hereditary characteristics from generation to the next.

Watson and Crick discovered that DNA consists of a double helix of two strands coiled around each other. The strands are made up of complementary elements that fit together and when uncoiled can produce two copies of the original.

The modest duo began their article: "We wish to suggest a structure for the salt of deoxyribose nucleic acid (DNA). This structure has novel features which

are of considerable biological interest."

Indeed it was. They had discovered the secret of life.
