This year will be the 10th anniversary of The Five Valleys Directory which set me think-ing about all things ephemeral (which we have proved we are not) but which seems to be more the norm lately. The so-called ’celeb’ culture being a typical example of this but nearer to home I do struggle when I see people/businesses proclaiming themselves to be ‘the best …….in Gloucestershire etc’ on their web-site when they are just starting up. The best by whose standards? I have every admiration for anyone who works hard and proves themselves to be the best or one of the best but until I have proof of it the ‘blurb’ is just meaningless. I think we have proved to be one of the best local advertising vehicles for all types of businesses in the Gloucestershire area and we have done that by hard work, reliability and consistency and BY RESULTS-something that no self-congratulating strapline can do! Good to get that out of my system!

...we make saving money perfectly clear...

STEAMED UP DOUBLE GLAZING?Don’t replace the Frames... just the Panes!

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Paul Spiller feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although

that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service Stroud and the surrounding valleys and

Paul is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family

of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Paul a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Restoration of old shears a speciality

As Stroud Plumbing Limited, I have as a regular and longstanding advertiser in 'The Five

Valleys Directory" always been satisfied with the help that I have received, and more

importantly the response that I have gained from the magazine itself. I would have no

reservation recommending the magazine to other small businesses (as long as they are

not too similar to my own of course ) and feel sure that they would get a regular response

as have I. The 'Five Valleys Directory' is currently one of my preferred advertising tools.

With Thanks Andrew Barnard, Stroud Plumbing

Thank you for putting together my advert each month as it is now my prime source of

work. So keep up the good work! Denis Morris Handyman.

The 5 Valleys has been my chief source of new business for over 5 years now. Like many other therapists I indulged in an expensive website with high hopes of an excellent return....yet my clients inform me that is rarely their first port of call. I’ve also splashed out on more glossy publications but somehow they don’t attract the local community in the same numbers as 5 Valleys. It appears this small, attractive, yet very unpretentious directory is always on hand when someone needs help.

As for Catherine she chooses to operate as an editor, primarily as a friend. Oh, she knows her stuff and she is a true professional, but so are many others. No the difference is she understands how small businesses work and the absence of staff to delegate to. Catherine would never make demands, reasonable or not. Neither would she get uppity, or take you for a ride. What she offers she sticks to and her word is her bond and well...what else is there to say, really? Ruth Coxall, Hypnotherapist

Where were you born and brought up?

I was born and brought up in Newport, South Wales.

What did you do after leaving school? After I left school I trained to be a registered nurse in Bristol. I have since worked in a variety of specialised areas including diabetes, kid-ney disease, research and as a prison nurse. I now have over 30 years experience as a nurse.

How did you become interested in Aromatherapy? It was my career path as a nurse that led me to do my training in massage/anatomy and physiology at Bristol Cancer Help Centre. Very early on in my career I became interested in other treatments that can be used alongside modern medicine and provide help. I gained my ITEC diploma in Swedish Massage in 1988.

I then started adding some essential plant oils to the base oils I used for massage, loving the extra benefit of the fragrance. I knew there was much to learn and wanted to do further training to learn about the essential oils. My training in aromatherapy was at the Leaves School of Aromatherapy which was affiliated with Shirley Prices School, one of the founders of Aromatherapy in the UK. I gained my IFA Clinical Diploma in Aromatherapy in 1991. I am a fully insured member of the International Federation of Aromatherapy required to undertake yearly professional development. I also have a Bsc in psychology and health science which came about from my time as a prison nurse working with addiction and mental health issues.

Greenleaves Aromatherapy

What of your home life? I currently live in Painswick with my 21 year old cat and 2 year old Cocker Spaniel Sasha who I’m hoping to breed a litter from this year. Any interests or hobbies? Having a dog I love walking in the Cotswolds, it’s such a fabu-lous place and I never tire of it. I also love yoga and attend classes in Painswick.

Another big passion is 19th and 20th century decorative ceram-ics and glass and I also run an antiques business called Crazy Cat Antiques named after Wilma, my cat. I love mooching about at flea and antique fairs when I’m not working there my-self.

Any plans for the future? I currently produce a range of dog aromatherapy products using natural ingredients and essential oils. These are great for the dogs coat and general well being and include shampoos, coat conditioner, coat conditioner/sprays, healing balms for cuts and scrapes, and a massage oil for arthritis/minor sprains. Most dogs love aromatherapy and having their paws massaged. I currently sell my Aromadog products at Painswick and other local markets in the area. I am hoping to get them out to dog groomers and some pet shops by the end of the year.

I also enjoy making my own natural cosmetics/skin products from scratch, as I have sensitive skin and like to know whats going into what I use on my face/body and hair. I use essential plant oils and other natural ingredients to make cleansers, moisturisers, shower exfoliating salts, eye gels, lip balms, soaps and roll on perfumes for myself and for friends as gifts. I am hoping by the end of the year to find a venue and people inter-ested in making their own cosmetics/skin products, and run some small workshops.

Most of all I would like to hopefully keep doing what I enjoy, which I’m lucky enough to be doing at the moment

In need of a bit of cheering up? Choose chocolate!

Spring is here and with it Easter. Who doesn't love gi-gantic chocolate eggs? We love giving them to friends and even more receiving... and consuming. No wonder, because it simply makes us happy. Chocolate contains phenylethylamine, which raises the level of endorphins and serotonin, which pro-motes humour.

The question remains, will you be happy afterwards, trying to fit into your sum-mer clothes? Perhaps not and that’s why we suggest, don't eat it- apply it.

The effects of chocolate were recently rediscovered and are now being used in cosmetics in the form of a mixture of cocoa powder and cocoa butter, fat, spices and milk. It has some of the same positive effect on our body as if you were eat-ing it.

Chocolate treatments moisturise, firm and smooth the skin. They also slow the ageing process, cocoa beans are rich in flavonoids, which protect the skin from free radicals damaging the body. Chocolate cosmetics also have anti-cellulite and slimming qualities, cocoa beans contain vitamins A, B, E, PP, and theobromine, carbohydrates, protein, fibre, flavonoids, alkaloids (stimulating the kidney), and trace elements such as; Magnesium, which acts as anti-stress and toning and is necessary for proper skin regeneration. One bar of chocolate provides 20% of the daily demand of magnesi-um.

Iron, which is a necessary ingredient for the production of red blood cells and is responsible for nice skin colour. Iron enables the absorption of vitamins from the B group.

Zinc, which is responsible for the improved condition of our skin enables the cre-ation of elastin and collagen fibres, which are responsible for smooth and supple skin. Zinc also accelerates regeneration, helping neutralise free radicals and is involved in the processes of synthesis and fat burning.

Potassium, which regulates the water balance and helps maintain proper skin hydration.

Calcium, soothes skin irritations and is anti-allergic. It also compliments miner-als in the skin cells.

Chocolate treatments are exclusive body treatments acting on all the senses. They accelerate the burning of fat and improve skin firmness and elasticity. Therefore, we recommend a series of body firming chocolate treatments for people who want chocolate without the calories.

How Eggstraordinary!

Although the Easter weekend is the principal religious feast of the Christian year, most of its traditions have no basis in Christianity at all. In fact, the Jewish festival of Passover is closely linked to Easter by dates and symbolism. Passover, also known as Pesach, was celebrated long before the birth of Jesus. Before Easter was used as a name for this holiday, early Christians celebrated ‘Pascha’, a word derived from Pesach.

The word ‘Easter’ comes from an Anglo-Saxon fertility goddess called Eostre, who was associated with spring and new beginnings. Both Easter and Passover centre around re-birth, and bond neatly with the Anglo-Saxon festival of ‘Eostre-monath’ – Eostre’s month.

Hot cross buns, traditionally eaten on Good Friday, are linked to Passover. Originally they were unleavened bread, an important Passover food. Nowadays, they are more palatably leavened and marked with a cross to serve as a reminder of the crucifixion.

But where does the tradition of eating chocolate eggs come from? In the times of Eostre, eggs were given as gifts to celebrate the end of winter and as a symbol of new life. And need I mention the fertility characteristic of an egg? A traditional dish at a Passover meal is Beitzah, a hardboiled egg to represent life. All this evolved into Christians decorating the shells with colourful

patterns, and then moved onto our familiar, delicious chocolate Easter eggs.

Well, that’s the eggs worked out. But an Easter Bunny? A rabbit that lays eggs! Not to mention the need for these eggs to be hunted for and rolled down a hill. Well, the origin of the rabbit isn’t too hard to decipher. We go back to the goddess Eostre again. Her sacred animal was the hare. Rabbits are similar to hares and rather more common. Therefore the

two creatures became interchangeable. And of course rabbits are well-known for their prolificacy… so I’m afraid we’re back to fertility symbolism again.

The Easter Bunny and egg hunts seem to have started in Germany in the 16th century. Children made nests in the garden and, if they were good, the Easter Bunny would leave them coloured hard-boiled eggs to find the next morning. This tradition travelled to America with early German settlers and, like many old traditions, has now returned to Britain substituting chocolate eggs and a more interesting egg hunt.

Egg rolling on Easter Monday is a strange old custom, that is said to represent the rolling away of the stone blocking Jesus’ tomb. Also known as Pace-Egging, derived from the word Pesach, it has been fun for centuries, but nobody is sure why.

Perhaps it originated as a way of getting everyone out of the house for some much-needed exercise after a long weekend of feasting?

Suki North takes a look at Easter traditions

We all have stories to tell, the pity is that some go unnoticedand unprinted. We’ve been printing books for some time now.In the past few years we’ve done them on local history, novels, illustrated children’s books, guides, and family books that are perfect for recording close family stories. These have been as few as 20 copies.

With modern printing methods we can now print and produce just a few copies. These are ideal if you’d like to try your idea on the mainstream publishers, or just for those few exclusive people who you may like to write for.

Not only can we print your book, but we can advise you on the best way to prepare it for print, or we can do the whole of the design and artwork for you from scratch. We advise on the best binding methods for the books as well as suggestions for marketing, and we can even build you a simple website for it too.

Before we print we talk. So if you have a story to tell and you want to get it into print call me: Paul Davies, on 01452 300158 and lets make your book a reality.

Everybody’s got a book in them.
