Welcome to the very first edition of 2013 and a Very Happy New Year to all our advertisers, readers and wonderful FVD deliverers! As regu-lar readers will know, we don’t always publish a January edition (I normally look forward to a lovely long break!) but having had requests from several advertisers we decided that we would and I am sure you will agree it is worth it as we have lots of interesting features and useful services inside. It’s always sad to see local shops closing and especially when it’s shops like the wonder-fully quirky Fandango in Nailsworth, owned and run by Ursula Woolls, a lovely colourful charac-ter. On pages 30-31 you can read all about why Ursula has decided to shut up shop after many years.

Our People Profile on pages 20/21 feature Hay-ley Peachey from Miles Morgan Travel in Nails-worth and on page 24 you can read all about my very relaxing visit to FootworX.

You see, it was definitely worth forsaking my extra holiday! Happy reading!

A Peek into the Past On January 1st 1660 Samuel Pepys began to keep a diary. When he started it he could have had no idea what an important document it would become. It is one of the most important documents for historians studying the English Restoration period, which coincidentally also began in 1660.

What makes Pepys’ diaries so special is that for just under a decade he recorded the minutiae of his every day life. He was also quite well connected. His cousin, Edward Mountagu, was a high-ranking naval officer who found a position for Pepys at the Navy Office in the City of London. A combination of hard work and talent saw Pepys promoted through the ranks very quickly. His cousin's position meant that Pepys was able to be present

at many important events, all of which he recorded in his meticulous shorthand.

For example, Pepys was aboard one of the ships which sailed to Holland to bring Charles II back to England. He attended King Charles II's coronation and he was also President of the Royal Society for a while.

Pepys recorded everything in his diary. He gave vivid

accounts of the Great Plague and the Great Fire of London. It is from him that we are able to relive the theatre of the period, as well as fashion and popular food and drink. His diary has been of invaluable assistance to historians and has given much pleasure to its many readers

15The Helen O' Grady Drama Academy develops confidence, creativity, com-munication and performance skills. Principal Rosie Reynolds believes that during the classes ‘We inspire, create and empower! If we constantly build children up, reminding them of their abilities, they will certainly have a future that is bright!’ We have classes all over Gloucester-shire; our most popular studio is Stroud! Every child has the right to be happy and confident!

Whether you want to improve your child’s concentration, boost their confi-dence, build their communicative skills or just provide a creative outlet for them to have fun and make new friends, Hel-en O’Grady’s Drama System for children is the right way to go!

The Drama System taps into children’s natural love of drama and channels that energy into a self-development programme that is designed to increase their con-fidence, communicative skills and creative talents.

*Drama allows children the creative outlet of expressing themselves freely, yet constructively! *Drama allows children to imagine the world in their own fresh, bright colours! *Drama allows children to speak confidently without the fear of being judged! Drama is used as a developmental platform whereby speech-work, coordination, improvisation activities and exercises are focused upon. Furthermore, it is an excel-lent way for children to gain a better feel for the English language and to become more articulate when speaking as well as build-ing up their vocabulary – perfect for both native and non-native English speakers.

People Profile

Hayley Peachey

Miles Morgan Travel

Where are your family from? My family have been in and around Nailsworth/Shortwood/Horsley for many generations. My Mother’s father, Morris Vick used to ride his horse to Cirencester to collect coal and then lead the horse loaded with the coal back to Nailsworth. He also played the big bass drum in Nailsworth silver band for 35 years. My Dad’s father George Peachey played football for Forest Green and worked at Newman Henders. I remember as a child going for a family Christmas with my grandparents in Horsley when the village shop used to be on the right as you came up the hill, opposite the pub where my parents used to have a drink before Christmas lunch! The village has changed a great deal.

Where did you go to school? I went to Nailsworth Infant School and then on to the Junior School that was on the hill going up to Forest Green, after that I went to Stroud High School for Girls as I passed my eleven plus. I had to travel on a crowded bus to and from school. After Home Economics I remember bringing cakes, stews and fish cakes home on the bus in a cookery basket trying desperately not to spill the contents over every-one!

Where did you holiday as a child? I always remember going to Paignton in Devon and staying in a bed and break-fast. I was always interested in travel from an early age.

Where did your life progress from there? When I left school I started working for Pickfords Travel. I have always enjoyed working for people organising their holidays and this also gave me the opportuni-ty to see the world. My first trip outside Europe was when I was only 19 and I went to the Seychelles for a week. I remember travelling on the mini bus to the hotel and seeing people living in tin shacks with women outside hanging out their washing. The hotel where we stayed had turtles in the garden. Whilst on the beach there I bumped into a girl I knew from Cheltenham! Since then I have travelled to many places including the Maldives, Mauritius, Thailand, Jamaica, Antigua, the Dominican Republic, the Algarve, Italy and Greece. I love the is-lands of the Mediterranean. My partner Mark and I have been together for 12 years and 8 years ago I gave birth to our daughter Kyra. Following her birth we

found it easier and more relaxing to stay in private villas, it was more like being at home. Hayley showed me a lovely ring she was wearing - I was in St John’s, Anti-gua and walked into a jewellers to browse. The lady serving in the jewellers told me to go outside and look at the ring in the sunshine-which I did! I bought the ring because of her trust in me; I could not imagine a jeweller do-ing that in this country!

Any incidents whilst on holiday? 1) On my first ever cruise I had a cabin at the bottom of the ship and when sailing from Majorca to Malta the sea was rough and my porthole was mostly underwater! I made sure I didn’t choose a low cabin again on later trips and recommend this to my customers too!

2) When visiting Antigua the volcano on Montserrat was erupting and the ship we were travelling on changed colour from brown to white and we had to wear little face masks to avoid breathing in the volcanic ash, but it didn’t spoil our time there.

3) After two hours of heavy rain in Koh Samui, Thailand, the locals quickly and cleverly responded by placing wooden ramps in the road so our mini bus could get some grip. Later a waiter from our hotel took Mark and I to the beach on his moped – that’s service for you!

5) When Excel Travel unfortunately went into liquidation, one of our custom-ers was stranded in Egypt. Miles Morgan, our Managing Director was in constant communication with the customers to reassure them whilst sorting out an alternative flight home.

How long have you worked for Miles Morgan Travel? I have worked for Miles Morgan for six.years. The company has eleven branches and Miles always tries to add a personal touch. Miles recently or-ganised a Titanic Memorial trip to New York on the Fred Olsen’s Balmoral, which was a worldwide success and the company will be organising other events in the future.

Have you had any recent enjoyable holiday experiences? Yes, I recently travelled on a River Cruise to the stunning Rhine and Moselle. The ship glided elegantly across the waters, the food was outstanding and the scenery was amazing and because of the different places visited including Cologne, Koblenz and many more there was never a dull moment!

I really enjoy my job working at Miles Morgan Travel. As an independent travel agent we can organise holidays to many inspiring destinations and through a wide variety of holiday companies. Being independent means that we can give unbiased advice and work hard to meet our customers needs.

Most of us take our feet for granted never showing them any special attention apart from keeping them clean and trimming nails, so a treatment at “The FootworX” feels like a luxury. It is definitely very relaxing but Lou Mouton is a professional foot health practitioner and this is quite a different experience to a pedicure in your local beauty salon.

Firstly, there is a health questionnaire to complete and then Lou gives your feet a very thorough ‘once over’ using a low energy magnifying lamp.

There are a range of treatments depending on whether you have any problems with your feet such as corns, callouses or the dreaded fungal nail. Fortunately, I am free of these so opted for the Medical Pedicure which is a treatment created by Lou that gives the best of both worlds – a foot health check and a relaxing pedicure . Lou then removed my nail polish and my feet were given a thoroughly gorgeous soak in ‘Spa Ritual’ soak tonic. I was particularly impressed with this range as everything is ve-gan, even the nail polish and nail polish remover (most nail pol-ishes contain formaldehyde-lovely!!).

After my feet had been exfoliated they were soaked and then massaged - which almost sent me to sleep!

Lou uses a water drill to file down and smooth the nails and doesn’t believe in cutting back cuticles as she says that they help to protect the nail bed, so cuticles are just eased back and any rough skin is removed. Lou can also advise on general day to day care of the feet and as they have to last us a lifetime, it is well worth listening!

It was testament to Lou’s wonderful treatment that I chose not to have any (vegan, formaldehyde free) nail polish on my vastly im-proved toes, although it would be nice to try a colour next time. And there will definitely be a next time as my New Year’s resolu-tion is to visit “The FootworX” on a regular basis to give my feet the TLC they deserve! For further details see advert opposite

A Fandango is “a lively folk and flamenco dance with castanets”. The lively Nailsworth dance began in June 2003. The shop was al-ways intended to be a colourful and lively ex-perience and that’s what it has turned out to be. The dance began with three of us working as a co-operative, creating, importing and mar-keting a variety of products.

The business has taken on a life of it’s own. It has enabled me to grow and become more rounded as a person, overcome my shyness and meet and get to know some marvellous people who I now count as friends. I have learnt it is better to be challenged as a person, it gives you the motivation to get out of bed! I have never been good with paper-work (and still hate it) but it is a necessary evil.

Fond memories? Christingle evenings-hard work, being a little tipsy and giving a lot of my stock away! A charity head shave inspired by Cherry Mitchelli which took place in the Village Inn with my friend Nick in 2010. We raised £2,500.

Nailsworth has a fantastic business community but I feel that times are changing, particularly this Christmas when my good friend and local character Gordon Pearce shut up his hardware store. Our suppliers used to be English and would supply objects In small numbers. Now the suppliers are global and want to supply you with hundreds of the same product! Nailsworth has always had a great cross-section of trades but with a down to earth small town philosophy but I am afraid we are now In danger of becoming “boutiquee” and losing our mill town grittiness.

There have been a lot of changes recently and there has been a major shift in how the public do their shopping, especially with the internet and the recession. Shopping in a small town is no longer a popular activity.

Fandango’s Finale! From Fandango owner Ursula Woolls

I would like to say thank you to all my sheep for catching peo-ple’s eye and encouraging other animals (and children) to join them. When I saw them initially at the Birmingham Trade Fair and bought some as decorations because I loved them, It didn’t occur to me they would become one of my best selling products! Next came chickens, life-sized calves, not to mention the ducks that have taken on a multiple of disguises as dogs, bikers, reindeer etc. Inflatable pirate’s monkeys and Buddha's fol-lowed, not to mention the inflatable nativity play that gave way to the sheep.

Cards have ranged from the sublime to the downright rude-well almost-(we always place a decency sticker over any shocking words!). It is love-ly to be sitting upstairs when a peel of laughter rings out from below as a customer opens a card-it is fun to try and guess which particular card they are reading! It is also fascinating to watch a customer approach the counter when the card is a little on the cusp!

What a joy to see a customer come back to the shop wearing jewellery or something else they have bought there.

The only person who can change your life is yourself. My shop has been an extension of myself and has changed just as much as I have changed-like the colours of my hair. It has been a liberating experience and who knows a new dance may arise after the last clash of the castanets! Coin-cidentally, it is an operation on my ankle that has spurred this decision to close, following a little late night dancing in ‘too high heels’ that resulted in a ruptured Achilles tendon! This did not stop me from continuing to dance into the night, especially as someone was daft enough to play the Buzzcocks ‘Fallen in love!’ Well you couldn’t not dance and dive off the stage to that! Well could you?! Surgery and then three months in plaster and you never know, I might even start the dance again!!?

Garden View

The British winter is a wonderful thing: sunshine and mild temperatures one day and several degrees below the next. If you think that is confusing for us gardeners, then imagine what it’s like for the wildlife.

For me, gardening is as much about the creatures which inhabit my plot as it is about the plants. In view of this, I like to make life as easy as possible for my little garden friends.

I’m not the tidiest gardener in the world, but this turns out to be a bonus in my quest to help the local wildlife. So you might think I’m lazy for not cutting down bare stems and soggy seed heads, but in fact I am providing luxury accommodation for over-wintering insects. These in turn attract certain birds and other insects for whom the luxury accommodation is more akin to a fast-food establishment.

When you trim hollow-stemmed plants, cut them into 10cm lengths and bind a few together into a bunch. Push this bunch of stems into a hedge or a sheltered corner and insects will find it...a sort of ‘build it and they will come’ construction...with apologies for the Kevin Costner film reference there! You can also buy some wonderful purpose-built constructions. My mother bought me an impressively titled ‘insect condominium’ a few Christmases ago which has proved very popular with solitary bees and ladybirds alike.

A gardening friend of mine gave me a great tip. He suggested placing a couple of ladybird shelters near my rose bushes so that when the warmer weather finally comes, early aphids will be gobbled up by the ladybirds and their larvae.

This month - Friends in need

Top Bird-feeding Tips Start with the basics A good quality sunflower seed based mix in a tubular feeder is a great starting point and will attract a wide variety of birds.

Add some extras Peanuts are a good source of protein and fat and are very popular. Raisins and apple chunks on a platform will attract blackbirds, thrushes and other fruit-lovers. Fat or suet is high-energy and gratefully received by many species during colder weather. Niger seed in small feeders will attract shy goldfinches if hung in a quieter part of the garden.

Check your hygiene Feeders should be clean and mould-free or they may spread disease.

Don’t forget water Fresh water is really important, especially if temperatures are below freezing.

Safety first Consider placing stickers on patio doors to reduce the risk of collisions. Protect birds from cats by hanging the feeders high enough and removing any potential hiding places nearby.

So here we are in a New Year. Time to re-evaluate where we are going, what we are seeking to achieve and what is important. Well, I think this year we should celebrate individual characters. Not in a self-glorification way-like on fa-cebook or in the glossy celebrity maga-zines-but in a calm appreciative way like Patrick Moore. Do you remember Pat-rick? The loony moon man who died last year. I have never been one for

star or planet gazing but Patrick’s knowledge, enthusiasm and light-heartedness made me take a closer look upwards on more than one occasion.

Variety is the spice of life. It is always pleasing to be greeted by a well-known face when buying your groceries or your paper at your local store in the morning (does anyone do that any more?). You are unlikely to meet any individuals in a superstore! - correct me if I am wrong. Individuals seem to vanish in inverse proportion to the number of baked bean cans and toilet rolls there are on the shelves.

Which brings me to another syndrome. Have you ever suffered from megastoreitis? This is a condition which induces panic in the victim resulting from the morbid dread of being stranded in a large store full of endless commodities. I suffered an attack of this on a visit to a well-known Scandinavian store (which I cannot name). I compounded the problem by jumping into a lift in an attempt to es-cape. What a relief it was to get back to reality!

As can be seen elsewhere in this magazine, two stores in Nails-worth are closing. Shopping malls full of big name stores selling mass-produced items are no substitute. Bigger is not better and shopping on the internet may be easier and cheaper but losing local characters and businesses makes our world duller and flat-ter. Viva the individual! Support your local shops and stores!
