Welcome to a packed Autumn edition and a beautiful time of the year. I’ve just returned from a lovely week’s break in Devon and Cornwall where the sun shone every day and reminded me that when the weather is so good there is no better place to be! However, if you like your holidays fur-ther afield then turn to page 21 and read about Odyssey World, a local company offering tailor-made holidays

Closer to home, now is a good time to tackle those jobs in the house and gar-den or better still call on some of the excellent services advertised in your local magazine! If you have already used any of these then do write in and let us know how well this worked for you. Feedback is essential for both them and us! Catherine

STEAMED UP DOUBLE GLAZING?Don’t replace the Frames... just the Panes!

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Paul Spiller feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although

that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service Stroud and the surrounding valleys and

Paul is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family

of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Paul a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Water touches every area of our lives. We come into contact with it every single day. Washing clothes, washing ourselves, cooking, cleaning and of course drinking – many of us however suffer with the detrimental effects of hard water on a daily basis. 13 million house-holds in the UK are affected by hard water. The Stroud area is re-nowned for suffering from the consequences of calcium and magne-sium in the water which causes limescale.

Tight skin after washing, scum on your tea, a bath that never bub-bles, limescale in the kettle, grubby bathroom and kitchen, furred up boiler, inefficient heating system – sound familiar? All are a conse-quence of hard water. There is a simple, long-term solution; installing a water softener will remove the magnesium and calcium from your water which causes limescale. Whether it gives you gorgeous glossy hair, plumped up skin and money back in your pocket, or you simply spend less time doing laborious cleaning – for all these reasons, once you’ve tried a water softener, you won’t ever want to give it up!

Based in Tetbury local company Dolphin Water Softeners have been experts in water treatment solutions for 10 years and supply one of the industry’s leading water softeners, the Kinetico 2020c. The unique twin-tank, non-electric design provides you with luxuriously soft water 24 hours a day. It’s easy-to-use, economical to run and will fit conveniently under your kitchen sink. Testament to the premi-um quality of the Kinetico 2020c, it also comes with a 10 year war-ranty to give you complete peace of mind. If you want to experience the wonderful benefits a water softener can bring, for a limited period, Dolphin Water is offering its customers an exclusive Autumn offer of FREE installation (worth over £250)* for all Kinetico 2020c’s purchased until 14th November 2014. Where were you born and

brought up?

I was born in Pretoria, South Africa. I still think of our house, the windows with the views of the city (and the frightening lightning and thunderstorms) and our garden – I must have climbed, or tried to climb, every tree. It was a huge garden. I had many trees to climb. We had dogs, I had cats (I kept adopting cats, or they would adopt me); I rescued birds (not many happy endings there). I kept mice, cha-meleons; a snake.

What did you do after you left school? I was planning to become a vet. Then I decided to study languages instead (I’ve always had it in mind that I would travel). My maternal grandmother, after whom I was named (Petronella), reminded me that a (suburban) vet’s life would be nothing like James Herriott. ( I read about the English country vet… I read a lot about a lot of things: great for the imagination - and for language – not so good for realistic career advice…) So I decided to study, to ‘try’ Drama Studies, just for a year, whilst wait-ing for a boyfriend to finish his army service, to then travel overseas - Europe, mainly. With both parents being actors, it was rebellion that stopped me, and my fiercely independent side, from considering acting as a career,… but there you go, I was in, and it was to be ten years before I ‘got out’ again. I finished my BA in Drama and moved to Bloemfontein as actor. Not well paid, but hard, rewarding work, doing children’s theatre (once with a live goose on stage), Shakespeare , touring the countryside, a one woman show about Anne Frank; direct-ing a 13 strong cast in a ‘Jolly Christmas Musical’: the set was scaffold-ing, the three wise men wore miners hats and did gumboot dancing. Lots of fun. Then a leading part in a television series came my way, and I moved to Johannesburg, which I loved. Back to civilisation, it felt, closer to the heartbeat of the continent. But then I got a taste for film-making, to tell stories from behind the camera. I left SA for America, to learn about film, travelling from East to West. I stayed a year, learnt more about

25myself than about films, which was good and it prepared me for this life, working with people, seeing the individual, making connections , putting myself in their shoes. How did you become interested in the work that you do now? I enjoyed acting. As a child of actors, I instinctively knew what to do; something would happen when I stepped on stage, I felt at home. Ener-gised, inspired. As if talking to each member of the audience, individually, but all at the same time. It can be magic. But it’s too full of lights. Attention to the outside of things. Then somebody close to me went through a diffi-cult divorce (is any divorce easy? I don't think so). But I saw how the child suffered: in silence. And the doctor told the mum her child had depres-sion. He was five or six. I thought that’s it. I want to work with children one to one as a therapist – not as an entertainer. But my training as an actor comes in very handy, as I have to improvise and take on roles as and when children tell me to. I believe in their world: play is serious business, not to be taken lightly. It’s Playing for Real, as somebody put it. So I went back to university, studied for another BA – this time in Psychol-ogy, then the MA in London followed, and here I am, ten years later: Petro-Nelise, Play Therapist.

What are you interests and hobbies? Good books, good coffee, good films, good food and my dog taking me for walks. Walking in the rain is better than staring at it through the window. I’ve recently taken up running, kind of, and I still like to climb trees, but not too high: it confuses my dog. Oh yes and writing haikus. Short Japanese poems. Three Lines. 17 sylla-bles.

What of your home life? As a therapist, I need to keep boundaries between my home life and my work. But I can say I am happy where I live: I can see trees and sky. I am well supported by friends and family. I am fortunate.

Any plans for the future? My hope is that blueboxandtail will become a place where children - and their parents - can find a place to be, to explore, to grow. To feel support-ed. Accepted. Parenthood is not an easy job. Being a child isn’t either. But I’ve never looked too far into the future (who can?). There’s too much to see. Here. Now. Here’s a haiku I composed over the summer one day: if i could i would turn a somersault in joy: i see you; you me.

Giving a massage to your partner is a great, inti-mate way for you to both relax together and en-joy your time as one. However, in some cases if you are not properly trained or have not looked up any massage techniques you may actually cause more harm than good to your partner. Below we have pointed out a few hints and tips for you the next time you want to treat each other to a soothing mas-sage, so hopefully it will be a relaxing and wonderful experience for you both. Set the Mood When giving someone a massage you should always try to set the ambience of the room, so it is as relaxing as possible for them. Things like burning candles and essential oils such as sandalwood and lavender will fill the room with calming smells that will help lull them into a cocoon of pure relaxation. Performing the massage on the floor is actually better than on a squishy bed, just make sure you make it extra comfortable for them with lots of soft, fresh quilts and fleecy pillows – magic! Techniques Make sure you have plenty of wonderful aromatic oils and that you warm them up with your hands first. Run your hands up and down the whole back gently, in soft sweeping arcs and motions. Steadily start doing this more and move slowly around the body. Get your partner to tell you what feels good and at what pres-sure they like it, you’ll soon find a spot like the hands, feet or back where they will be dopey with relaxation and putty in your hands. Don’t ever press too hard (unless your partner says so) or dig your fingers in as this is where you can cause pain and damage to the muscles.

Health Problems If your partner has any back or muscle problems, try to stay away from that area as you can cause more harm than good in the long run. Always listen to them and do not continue if they seem to be in a lot of pain, as some forms of massage are good if it hurts but not if you are not specifically trained.

Don’t despair with massage and at first if you don’t succeed try, try again! What better way to bond and connect with each other than to give one another the gift of massage? Not only will you feel more relaxed and happier but you should also feel closer to each other as well. Still don’t feel sure? Vanilla Moon offer couples workshop to learn to massage each other.

Changes Welcome Hypnotherapy: Stop smoking in October

Are you one of the six million people in the UK who want to stop smoking? Well, this month is “Stoptober”* and so it is your chance to save your health and your wealth! After all, even if you smoke just five cigarettes a day then you will be spending, on average, £730 a year on the habit! Just stop for a minute and think about all the things that you could spend that money on, perhaps you would like to go on a family hol-iday? Put money towards a car, or save up for the MOT? Perhaps head off for a weekend away? However you decide to spend the cash then surely it has to be bet-ter than spending it on a habit which is likely, ultimately, to cause pain and death. It’s been estimated that half of long-term smokers die prematurely and so lose an average of ten years of their life for this expensive habit. Liane Ulbricht-Kazan is a fully qualified and insured clinical Hypno-therapist practicing at the Nailsworth Natural Health Centre, where she helps people quit in the course of a single two hour session! She explains “Firstly, we check that the client has a strong inten-tion to quit. Then we look at how the brain works in relation to smoking and why the person smokes, taking into account their life context. We discuss the inner dialogue; the inner voice, which en-courages smoking and the one, which says stop. There is a lot we can do to remove these contradictions, and finally, with the appli-cation of hypnosis, we create a place in the mind, where smoking doesn’t exist at all.” The number of ex-smokers in the UK is greater than the number of people who actually still smoke, and although around 10 million people still light up that number is falling as 60% of smokers want to quit for good. Liane is a member of professional bodies such as the NCH and the CNHC and has both the HPD and DHP qualifications in Solu-tion Focused Hypnotherapy.

by Jon Mason of Highfield Garden World in Whitminster

A little time spent in the garden in October will paydividends come spring time. Here are some tips forjobs to do during those last few mild days of the year, whileplants are dormant and the soil is still warm.

Stand back and think about which branches help give the plant its shape. Use thosebranches to give the plant the shape you want. Remove overgrown and smallerbranches, as well as any which are dead or diseased. Always cut with sharp secateurs, just above a “node” (the point at which one branch or twig attaches to another).

Plant drifts of daffodil, tulip and bluebell bulbs to guarantee a springshow of colour. October is also a perfect time to relocate any plants,as well as to introduce fruit trees. From pears to plums and applesto apricots – there is a fruiting plant to suit whatever pot or plot youhave. Why not try something new!

Give your garden sheds, fences and furniture some care and attention before thecolder months arrive. Check for signs of damage, rot and rust, treating each as you gowith specialist products. Painting wood with preservative will help extend its life. Whynot choose a new colour such as blue or green, and give your garden a weekendmake-over?

Cut back dead plant stalks and sweep up fallen leaves to avoid allowingdiseases to over-winter. Alternatively, pile them into one designatedarea to make your own little wildlife haven. Also, raise your pots up offthe ground on bricks or ‘pot feet’ to avoid water-logging and frostdamage.

Come and see us at Highfield for more advice and ideas!

Sheepscombe Primary School News

Sheepscombe Primary School is set within a beautiful valley and prides itself on teaching and learning with children’s ideas at the heart of the themes taught. Children’s suggestions are gathered and questions generated which the teachers develop and plan linked to the National Curriculum. This leads to very fluid and exciting learning for the children with the context being one which they are not only interested in, but have been heavily involved in the planning of.

This term Class 1 are doing a theme entitled ‘Making Waves’ which is based on learning about fish, marine conservation and sea rescue. In order to have a real context for their learning they recently visited The Sea Aquarium in Weston- Super -Mare to both generate and answer some questions. A fantastic day was had by all and it was a great start to some new learning.

Class 2’s theme is ‘Roll up, Roll up’ where they are exploring the history , technology and mystery of fairgrounds and circus’. They have already begun to write some amazing poetry in relation to this and have planned for a circus skills day with a visitor in the next couple of weeks.

We pride ourselves on our underpinning values which have recently been demonstrated so well by Class 2 when they went on their team building day at the very start of term to the Forest of Dean . During the day they took part in a multitude of activities to encourage co-operation and thinking skills. Our weekly Forest School sessions at Ebworth enrich children’s experiences of the world and are another way they explore and demonstrate the school values.

Our School is also celebrating a recent grant for the installation of new playground equipment and markings on the playground. This has added a new dimension to the school and has been enjoyed by many already!

Should you wish to find out more about us we are holding an open day on

Thursday 16th October

from 2pm- 6pm for prospective parents so please come along and see what we get up to.

Primary School &Little Lambs Nursery

Sheepscombe Primary School provides ‘memorable learning opportunities and pupils benefit from an exciting

curriculum’ as stated in the recent (April 2014) Ofsted report which gave the school a

‘Good ‘judgement. We are proud of the fact that pupils behaviour and attitudes to learning are

‘often exemplary’.

We believe that values underpin all that we do withchildren and parents as well as the wider community.

Respect for one another is key as is trust and co-operation. We value the children as individuals

whilst ensuring that they know we care for them and want to develop their own personal potential.

We are very proud of our links with theNational Trust Ebworth Estate. We work

closely with the National Trust wardens to planprojects and activities. Each class regularly

walks up to Ebworth and uses the Yurt as a classroom.

Mrs Bennion is an accredited Forest Leaderand all our teachers relish the opportunity to

take the curriculum outdoors.

On ‘Fish Wednesday’ pupils enjoya hot lunch cooked at the Butchers

Arms and served in school by parentvolunteers. Vegetarian alternativesare available. Through the winter, arota of parents is drawn up to bakepotatoes and bring them in for the

children on a Thursday.

THE BRIEF

CONSTRUCT A BRIDGE OUT OF SPAGHETTI, STRONG

ENOUGH TO SUPPORT A 250G BAG OF SUGAR.

MATERIALS

Spaghetti, small rubber bands or bag

ties, sticky tape.

THE METHOD

Think about bracing strands together

for strength.

Some shapes are better

at absorbing loads –

triangles are particularly

strong.

Rubber bands make for

good junctions.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

Bridges manage two important forces:

compression and tension – pushing

and pulling.

Too much of either and they buckle

or snap.

Through trial and error,

you’ll become profi cient at

working with spaghetti.

THE BRIEF

USE A CARDBOARD BOX AND CARDBOARD STRUTS TO CREATE

A MARBLE RUN. THE MARBLE MUST RUN FOR 60 SECONDS.

MATERIALS

Large cardboard box, cardboard

struts, sticky tape, marbles,

scissors (with adult supervision).

THE METHOD

If you can’t fi nd cardboard struts,

you can make your own by folding

four inch strips of cardboard in half to

create a V shape.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

To help you to control the time your

marble takes to run its course you’ll

need to consider a few factors:

POTENTIAL ENERGY

= MASS x GRAVITY x HEIGHT

The heavier your marble, and higher

your slope the more energy your

marble will have.

FRICTION

The rougher or stickier

the surface, the slower

your marble will travel.

ANGLE OF THE SLOPE

The less steep the angle of

the slope, the longer the marble

will take to reach the bottom.

Ian, engineering analyst at Dyson

THE BRIEF

CREATE A COLOURFUL UNDERWATER VOLCANO.

MATERIALS

String, scissors (with

adult supervision), an

empty salt shaker, a

large jar, food colouring.

THE METHOD

Cut a two foot length of string with a pair of

scissors. Tie a knot around the neck of a salt

shaker with one end of the string. Double-knot it

to ensure the knot is secure. Repeat this process

with the other end of the string, resulting in a

handle to lower your shaker.

Empty and clean a large jar. Fill the clean jar

about three quarters full with cold water.

Fill the salt shaker with hot water (with adult

supervision) – as hot as you can get from your

tap – to just below the neck. Add three to four

drops of red food colouring.

Hold your salt shaker over the mouth of the jar by

the string handle. Slowly lower the salt shaker

into the jar until the shaker is completely

submerged and resting upright on the bottom of

the jar. Observe how the coloured water erupts

from the shaker into the cold water.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

This shows how convection currents work.

A convection current is the way that heat

rises and falls in liquids and gases.

Hot air balloons

use convection

currents. As hot air

rises, so too does

the balloon.

We all have stories to tell, the pity is that some go unnoticedand unprinted. We’ve been printing books for some time now.In the past few years we’ve done them on local history, novels, illustrated children’s books, guides, and family books that are perfect for recording close family stories. These have been as few as 20 copies.

With modern printing methods we can now print and produce just a few copies. These are ideal if you’d like to try your idea on the mainstream publishers, or just for those few exclusive people who you may like to write for.

Not only can we print your book, but we can advise you on the best way to prepare it for print, or we can do the whole of the design and artwork for you from scratch. We advise on the best binding methods for the books as well as suggestions for marketing, and we can even build you a simple website for it too.

Before we print we talk. So if you have a story to tell and you want to get it into print call me: Paul Davies, on 01452 300158 and lets make your book a reality.

Everybody’s got a book in them.
