INTRIGUE of Stroud ... Touch & Feel !
A warm welcome to Intrigue of Stroud in Kendrick Street - the new face of
the twice popped-up Bowl of Beauty.
Caroline Ractliffe, is hugely excited to be opening her new shop INTRIGUE in June and has elderflower bubbly to tempt you all to visit.
Caroline says “I feel strongly that, now more than ever, if our towns are to survive the creeping online shopping threat, the independent shops need to give a fun and interesting shopping experience to our customers. We need to make it worthwhile for shoppers to suffer the inconvenience of parking their car, or getting on a bus, and ensure that customers can ‘touch and feel’. These senses will be the high street saving grace - a service the internet will not be able to replicate I hope! Ladies please visit for real life retail therapy - alive and kicking!”
INTRIGUE has a Camden Stables Market ambience with colourful Gringo garments, sassy summer dresses, tempting Turkish journals, British leather belts and bags, a new collection from Thailand, and many great gifts and greeting cards.

STEAMED UP DOUBLE GLAZING?Don’t replace the Frames... just the Panes!
Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Paul Spiller feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although
that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service Stroud and the surrounding valleys and
Paul is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family
of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Paul a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Stroud’s funeral director, Michael Gamble, has once again been named one of the UK’s best funeral directors following an assessment visit by the Good Funeral Guide, an independent funeral consumer advocacy organisation.
In its review of Michael Gamble Funeral Directors the Good Funeral Guide says: “A small husband and wife team which works hard to offer a good, hon-est service”. It goes on to say: “they go the extra mile, and they enjoy doing so. Every client is special”. Find the full review here: http://www.goodfuneralguide.co.uk/funeral-directors/michael-gamble-funeral-directors-ltd/
The Good Funeral Guide assesses select funeral homes according to strict cri-teria which focus on the experience they offer to bereaved people. Michael Gamble Funeral Directors has been inspected to ensure that clients are treated with courtesy, listened to with empathy, offered a full range of choice, charged fairly and empowered to play whatever part they want in creating a send-off for the person they have lost which accords with their values and wishes.
The accreditation process also involved spending time behind the scenes in order to ascertain that those who have died are cared for with the utmost ten-derness and respect.
Charles Cowling, author of the Good Funeral Guide, says: “Choosing a funeral director can be very difficult because they all look much the same. But they’re not. Some, a precious few, are truly out-standing, and Michael Gamble is one of them.
“The team at Michael Gamble Ltd are unsung he-roes doing a magnificent job, and the people of Stroud deserve to know this. Bereaved people need to do their very best for their loved one. They de-serve the very best funeral director.”
Michael says: “Clare and I are thrilled and proud to receive this award from the Good Funeral Guide. We, at Michael Gamble Funeral Directors, are dedi-cated to providing meticulous attention to detail, together with courtesy, re-spect and politeness. We provide families with the practical guidance and emotional support at a time when grief and intense feelings of loss can make even the most simplest of tasks overwhelming.”

Where did you start life?
I was born in Nottingham and brought up there. As a boy my passion was football, I could have played it all day every day. I played amateur football for the county and had a trial for Notts County but my serious footballing career ended when I broke my leg badly. I returned to my football roots when I played for Randwick, 40 years ago. We had a great time and I managed to score 6 hat tricks in 6 consecutive weeks. A rare feat!
How is it you are now in Gloucestershire? I went on holiday with a friend, camping in the Isle of Wight. We had a Triumph Herald and were camping at Niton near Freshwater Bay. I met my wife Anne there who was also camping with a friend, they just had a set of thumbs and rucksacks-so we invited them to join us and then spent the holiday taking them round the island. Anne and I fell in love with the island and with each other. We decided we wanted to move to the island and live there. Anne was a teacher and could find work quite easily but as an electrician it wasn’t quite so easy for me as there were only two electrical contractors on the island and I decided I didn’t want to get the ferry and commute to Southampton every day,
What happened next? Anne invited me to come to Gloucestershire where I discovered what a wonderful place it is. I was very happy to move here and we have lived here ever since.
We got married and had our honeymoon in the Isle of Wight-where else! We stayed in a boarding house in Ventnor and one evening we went out to the cinema and came back rather late, about 11.00pm. to find the landlady had locked the door. She lived at the back and did not hear us calling her. Eventually, I decided to climb up the trellis on the front of the building to reach the veranda so we could get in. I was about 8 feet off the ground when the landlady arrived. What a telling off I received!

The following year we went back to the Isle of Wight and on this holiday Anne became pregnant with our first daughter, Victoria and on our subse-quent holiday two years later on the island she became pregnant with our second daughter, Rebecca. How many more children we would have had if we had kept visiting the island I can’t imagine!
Another memorable holiday was when Anne and I took the girls to Euro-Disney near Paris, We were camping on a site in a park and as my daughter Victoria had just passed her test I let her drive to Disney from the camp site, leaving our caravan behind on the site. We started to drive back to the camp site late in the evening when I realised I had forgotten where it was! We drove around for hours going on and off the motorway-because I had not been driving I had not been concentrating on the route, I had been too busy directing my daughter! The only landmark I could remember was a windmill on top of a hill. About 6.30 in the morning after driving around all night we met a calor gas delivery man who was able to direct us to the right camp site after I described this landmark in my pi-geon French. The girls were in tears by the time we found the caravan! We then had to drive straight to the ferry as otherwise we would have missed our crossing home. Because I was rushing I went through the wrong motorway access gate, it was only for cars. The plastic barrier came down on the trailer link between the vehicles and smashed it to pieces but I just drove on so we didn’t miss the ferry! I slept for hours when we got to Dover!
Where have you worked in Gloucestershire? After we settled in Gloucestershire, I worked for Clarke Electrical Engi-neers for 3 years and then became a self-employed electrical contractor-doing a lot of electrical work for Anne’s father Richard, of South Brothers in Tirley. After that I became a sales representative for an electrical wholesaler-Electrical Conduits and then later joined Newey & Eyre as Branch Sales Manager. I also worked for Phillips Lighting as an area sales representative. Phillips taught me about lighting design. I also be-came Branch Manager of the new branch of AC Electrical in Bristol. This gave me the desire to do my own thing and in 1986 I started my own electrical wholesale business concentrating more and more on all kinds of lighting. My particular favourite is garden lighting. We have just rede-signed our lighting showroom so please do come and see us and the range of fittings we stock.

The Cotswold Gardening School Wants Your Garden!
The Cotswold Gardening School is looking for local project gardens for their new One Year Professional Garden Design Diploma Course. The school is building upon the success of its popular Ten Week Courses in Professional Garden and Planting Design and Professional Horticulture by launching a new One Year Diploma Course in Profes-sional Garden Design.
The school's Principal, Caroline Tatham, also runs a busy garden de-sign practice and is a qualified and experienced lecturer. She has built a garden at The Eden Project and won several awards for her design, including for a collaboration at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show. She has also appeared in the ITV series ‘A Garden For Eden’. The New One Year Diploma Course launches this September and is taught by Caroline with other visiting lecturers who are experts in their chosen fields. A highly intensive and enjoyable course, Caroline’s strong background of lecturing at Central Saint Martin’s School of Art in London as well as The English Gardening School means that The One Year Diploma in Professional Garden Design has a strong em-phasis on both creativity and practical garden design. There will be four live projects over the year, designing real local gar-dens for real people meaning that students will graduate with a portfo-lio of work and practical experience ready to get started with their new career in garden design. The course includes everything needed to set up a successful and professional garden design business, with no previous experience necessary. The school offers a wide range of garden design courses and creative workshops in a converted old dairy building set within the nine acre grounds of historic Gossington Hall, currently undergoing a
comprehensive renovation and the work in the garden is fund-ed by profits from the school.
Caroline has served on the Committee for Students and Colleges for The Society of Garden Designers and ar-ranged placements for past stu-dents at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show. The Cotswold Gardening School prides itself in of-fering quality learning in a fun, friendly and relaxed atmosphere and class sizes are limited to small intimate groups with refresh-ments provided. Our students love spending the day with like-minded people in a beautiful tranquil setting with qualified and ex-perienced tutors passionate about sharing their knowledge. Many who come to the school are new to professional creativity and soon realise that they love it!

Caring for yourself is often the first thing put on the back burner when you are caring for someone else. Whether you are a busy mum, or caring for an elderly or ill relative, don’t forget to take some time out for your-self to care for you! We know that busy carers and mummies won’t be able to take the time out to spend days away at a spa resort, but we’ve got lots of ideas to keep you feel-ing like you with a tiny bit of pamper time with Vanilla Moon. Stay Healthy! Rushing around combined with the stresses of work and worry can mean that you leave yourself running on empty, grabbing take away food and using caffeine as a means to boost your concentration and stave off tiredness. Make sure you get your five a day; swap morning toast or skipping breakfast for wholegrain cereal with two pieces of fresh fruit with some fresh juice. Try to keep caffeinated drinks to before 3pm, drinking tea or coffee later than this may affect your sleep. Swap for decaffeinated or fruit and herbal teas. Camomile is great for helping relaxation in the evenings and is naturally caffeine free. Get yourself a working routine! Wherever possible, try to plan out your day, getting up and getting to bed at the same time. This improves your ability to wake and also programmes your body to sleep at bed time. Making a list of tasks for the next day and keeping a diary can help you to stay or-ganised with minimum fuss, freeing up more time for yourself. Take a time out Set aside at least two hours of your week for yourself. Arrange for a friend or relative to have your children or keep an eye on your relative for a couple of hours. With another friend, you can easily arrange to swap responsibilities for a couple of hours so you can both get some ‘you’ time. Book a massage or manicure, visit the gym or just go for a walk, paint your nails or take a long relaxing bath with a book. Use this time wisely to de-stress, boost your self-esteem and feel good inside and out. A problem shared… Is a problem halved, so the saying goes. Invite friends for a cup of tea and share your burdens. Get in touch with carers groups in your area; talking to people in the same situa-tion as you will unlock tons of useful tips and information and will give you and your family a great boost of support. Even when you are tired and feel worn out, remember that a few kind words can make all the difference, so share them around with your friends and family and look for the positives in your life instead of dwelling on any nega-tives.

mobile internet is just a tiny part of my audience, so.....
WHY BOTHER?Nick Warner, of internet specialists Computancy in Bisley, says: “more and more of our clients are realising that they need to have a website that is responsive so it will be visible on all devices. All of our new website designs are built to be viewed correctly across different devices, browsers and platforms.
As internet technology moves on so quickly, we are now re-designing sites that were previously built as static sites only a year or so ago. Because of this we introduced a new monthly PAYG design & hosting package option that is proving very popular with smaller businesses. With these packages you know that your site is always up to date and will be re-designed every 24 months and all at a fixed, low monthy cost”
If you are thinking about a new business website, or updating your current one, Nick can be contacted on 01453 367063 with full details at www.computancy.co.uk

Every fur coat and every bit of fur trim is the result of tremendous animal suffering – and takes away a life. Millions of animals, including rabbits, raccoons, minks, foxes and even dogs and cats are killed in the name of fashion. They are anally and vaginally electrocuted, strangled, suffocated or drowned. Many are skinned alive.

Evesham Greyhound and Lurcher Rescue
The Evesham Greyhound and Lurcher rescue was set up in 1989 by Pip Single-ton who started bringing Greyhounds and Lurchers into her home in an attempt to stop them being destroyed. The Rescue grew and is now run by about 10 volunteers and has foster homes that look after and raise funds for the 70+ dogs being cared for at any one time. Hundreds of Greyounds and Lurchers need good homes every year, some are ex-racers, rejects from breeders and as both Lurchers and Greyhounds are predominantly working dogs, they are often victims of cruelty and abandonment.
Evesham Greyhounds and Lurchers live all over the country in foster homes where they are assessed before being re-homed. So no matter where you live, if you can offer a loving home to a Greyhound or Lurcher, please contact;

Have you got a book inside there? Then let sprinters
print it for you.Almost everyone has a book inside them, it’s just a matter of
extracting it from the grey matter and getting it into the print. With the latest modern digital technology we can print just a few
books or with conventional technology, thousands. Is it as simple as that? Well not quite.
You might have a great story to tell but it might need proofreading and editing, and once that is done it will
certainly need designing for the page.We have linked up with a local publisher and professional
proofreader to offer a complete package from the words in your head to the book on the shelf.
Alternatively if you want to print your book directly from your copy we can do that too, but the most important ingredient
before we print is advice, and we give lots of that too, for free.Who are we, and what’s our backgound?
Sprinters are part of Severnprint, one of Gloucestershire’s most established and respected print companies. Paul Davies,
who runs the Sprinters section, advises on the best way to print your book for the best results.
We do everything we can to make your ideas into a reality. In the first instance call Paul on 01452 300158 for a chat about
your project or even better come and see him at the Severnprint factory to see what we can do for you.
Alternatively take a look on-line at the Sprinters website where there is a special page on books.
Lets make your idea a reality.

Paul and Sprinters are part of Severnprint one of Gloucester’s finest quality printers and if he can’t answer your question he has lots of others behind him who can! Just ask.

Please mention The Five Valleys Directory when responding to adverts
aurie Lee said “I wanted to communicate what I had seen, so that others could see it”, and as you look around the Stroud valleys you can see why you would want to help
others understand the wonders of the area.
Whatever the season, our piece of this England is special . . . so special that to many it becomes ambition’s graveyard . . . How many have decided not to take that better job in Hull, Manchester or Luton (great though those places are) because our children go to our local primary school or it dawns on us that the quality of our lives would be less good somewhere else?
My company specialises in renting property (we are not estate agents) and I have to say that people are wanting to live in our area in ever increasing numbers. We now keep a register of people who desire to be a part of our community; people who want to have a part of what we see every day . . . and probably take for granted.
