Welcome to the September edition and it’s probably back from holiday and back to the school routine for lots of you! Septem-ber can be a lovely time of the year and often with a lot more sunshine than August so fingers crossed that we still have some bright, cheerful weather to look forward to - especially as we are off to Devon quite soon and were thoroughly spoilt last year by fab-ulous weather all week - we can only hope

Inside this month we have an interesting article by the experts from Changes Wel-come on depression and the causes that contribute towards feeling depressed plus some advice from Vanilla Moon on improv-ing our digestive systems. Looking after our minds and body in fact.

Thanks to the many businesses who have advertised in this edition and remember to please support them by keeping it local! Catherine

Lifestyle Bathrooms is a new venture for Rex Cart, who has over 30 years of experience in the bathroom industry. His business is based in Chalford, where he has lived for the past 8 years. Rex has strong links with Bath, where he has a warehouse, and supplies customers throughout the city. He is expanding his service to the Five Valleys area, as he has found there is a demand for his services here too.

Over the years Rex noticed a huge increase in demand for people who were looking for solutions to mobility issues. The population now has a larger proportion of older people, and there is frequently a need to adapt the bathroom to suit changing circumstances. Rex at Lifestyle Bathrooms offers a personalised service, and will visit your home to advise you on the options you have. He will look at your existing bathroom, and work out a plan with you using suitable products for your needs. There are numerous products available on the market, but Rex has the skill to select quality sanitary ware and furniture that will make the best use of your available space.

Changing your bath to a shower is the simplest and most common solution to mobility problems when bathing. It is possible to replace the bath with the same size shower, or you may want to take the opportunity of changing the whole layout of your bathroom. Anything is possible, and to suit all budgets. If you are keen to retain a bath in your house, there is always the option of a walk in bath. There are simple to operate taps, shower controls and wc flushing systems, all of which help to make life easier. Along with grab rails, non-slip surfaces and good lighting, these adaptations could revolutionise your lifestyle.

Lifestyle Bathrooms will supply your goods without VAT if you are disabled or have a chronic condition that would benefit from bathroom adaptation. They will advise on a case by case basis, but many people will find they do qualify for this substantial cost saving (HMRC rules apply).

Rex will be delighted to pay you a visit without obligation, so please give him a call on 07496 057281 or email on [email protected]

...we make saving money perfectly clear...

STEAMED UP DOUBLE GLAZING?Don’t replace the Frames... just the Panes!

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Paul Spiller feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although

that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service Stroud and the surrounding valleys and

Paul is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family

of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Paul a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Trust Your Tradesman!

If you’re planning a DIY plastering project there are a few things you should think about before starting—and the first is having your head examined!

Plastering is not a job for the uninitiated. Fact: most professionals have trained for years to become masters of their craft . Plastering is part- art, requiring tremendous eye-hand co-ordination, and part-chemistry. When you add water to dry plaster mix, you begin an irreversible chemical and crystallization process. The water and air content of the mix is critical, and timing is everything, as the plaster has to be ‘finished’ at just the right time.

The problem for Mr. DIY is that if it all goes wrong - and believe me, if you’ve never done it before, it will go wrong - no amount of paint or wallpaper is going to make that surface look good.

What plasterers do

They work both externally and internally. They mix and apply finishes to external walls using sand and cement, pebble-dash and stone-effect materials. Internally they mix and apply various types of plaster to walls, floors and ceilings.

Solid plastering is the application of a wet finish to an internal surface or a protective covering, such as pebble-dash, onto an external surface. The plasterer will use a range of hand tools and sometimes spraying equipment in the

case of pebble-dash.

Fibrous plastering involves making ornamental plasterwork such as ceiling roses, cornices, ornamental columns and architraves using moulds and a plaster and short fibre mix.

Dry lining is the construction of internal partitions using plasterboard or wallboards fixed to a timber or metal frame.

It really is best to use someone who has been recommended to you and whose work you’ve seen.

Failing that, contact one of the trade associations below. They will be able to put you in touch with someone local. All the organisations promote best practice and all will mediate in the event that you are dissatisfied with the services of any of their members.

Plastering is one of those jobs which looks blissfully easy but which, if done incorrectly, can cause endless heartache. You really are best to call in a professional.

As Stroud Plumbing Limited, I have as a regular and longstanding advertiser in 'The Five

Valleys Directory" always been satisfied with the help that I have received, and more

importantly the response that I have gained from the magazine itself. I would have no

reservation recommending the magazine to other small businesses ( as long as they are

not too similar to my own of course ) and feel sure that they would get a regular response

as have I. The 'Five Valleys Directory' is currently one of my preferred advertising tools.

The Five Valleys has been my chief source of new business for over 5 years now. Like

many other therapists I indulged in an expensive website with high hopes of an excellent

return....yet my clients inform me that is rarely their first port of call. I’ve also splashed

out on more glossy publications but somehow they don’t attract the local community in

the same numbers as the Five Valleys. It appears this small, attractive, yet very unpreten-

tious directory is always on hand when someone needs help. As for Catherine she

chooses to operate as an editor, primarily as a friend. Oh, she knows her stuff and she is a

true professional, but so are many others. No the difference is she understands how small

businesses work and the absence of staff to delegate to. Catherine would never make

demands, reasonable or not. Neither would she get uppity, or take you for a ride. What

she offers she sticks to and her word is her bond and well...what else is there to say,

Where were you born and brought up?

I am very much a local girl. I was born and brought up in Nailsworth on my parents farm together with my brother and 3 sisters. My dad still runs the farm today. I live next door to my brother and opposite my mum and dad, right on the doorstep of my riding school. I live and work horses 24/7.

What did you do when you left school?

I am and always have been pony made despite the fact that there was no interest from the rest of my family. I started off with a donkey called Lucy when I was 8 years old then graduated to my first pony called Lundi at the age of 10. Lundi was a rare breed pony from Lundi Island. I started having lessons at the Camp Riding School in Bisley where I joined the Stroud Pony Club. I competed in local shows and my biggest rival was Sam Tucker, we always vied for 1st and 2nd place with each other. Sam is now one of my Instructors at Barton End. At the age of 14 I got a part time job at the pet shop in Nailsworth where I developed an interest for small furry animals. I then decided to breed rabbits and guinea pigs to sell to the pet shop, so that was my first business venture. At the age of 16 I went to Hartpury College to do a National Diploma in Equine Busi-ness management. Living away from home for 2 years. I met my current husband whilst at Hartpury but we didn’t get together until 8 years ago. At 18 I went to work as a trainee groom at Hyde Riding Centre whilst working towards my teaching qualifications. I also went to work for Prin-cess Anne whilst training at Talland and Huntley Equestrian Centres.

What led you into the business you have now?

Whilst at Hyde I looked after a few horses on Livery at home and started teaching my friends to ride. I really enjoyed teaching so once I got my qualifications I decided to expand on my livery business and set up a riding school in 2000. I now have 3 donkeys, 50 horses and 20 liveries.

Any interests or hobbies

Horses, horses, ponies oh and donkeys. My leisure time, what little there is of it, is taken up with looking after the family and enjoying quality time with them where I can.

What of your home life?

As you can guess I am a workaholic, I am married to Nigel with two young children who attend Leigherton School. My daughter Jess is definitely following in her mother’s footsteps where her love of riding shines through and she can be found more often than not on the yard wanting to help out.

Plans for the future?

I would like to see myself continuing teaching and running Barton End but on a smaller scale, retiring some of our older horses that have been faithful friends over the years. I honestly can’t see myself doing anything else. I am surrounded by a great team of hardworking people who also share my passions. We are known for being a friend-ly, family run riding centre for all ages our oldest rider being 76! So whether you are a beginner, an occasional or a regular rider come and see what we have to offer.

A Peek into the Past On September 8th 1930 Richard G. Drew invented Scotch Tape.

Drew worked for 3M in St. Paul, Minnesota. Originally, 3M only made sandpaper, but during testing at a local car workshop, Drew observed that car painters had difficulty making clean dividing lines on two-colour paint jobs.

After two years of effort in the company labs, he invented masking tape (1925), a tan paper tape with a light, pressure sensitive adhesive backing. Five years later, he’d developed his invention further and Scotch Brand Cellulose Tape was born.

This was the first waterproof, see-through, pressure-sensitive tape. People loved the fact that it could help them make-do-and mend during the Great Depression and enthusiastically embraced the product. The introduction of the distinctive handheld

dispenser, ‘the snail’, in 1939 propelled it to iconic status. Even the popular US show Saturday Night Live got in on the act, parodying it in their 1978 sketch “Scotch® Boutique,” about the owners of a trendy new store selling nothing but Scotch® Tape.

Today there are more than 400 different varieties of tape sold under the Scotch and 3M brand.

Many people don’t appreciate just how complex the digestive system is and how necessary it is to our well-being. A healthy digestive system is essential for breaking down foods so that the body can get the nu-trition that it needs to stay healthy. A well-functioning digestive system is also vital to cellular repair and for giving us the energy that we need,

The digestive process The digestive process starts at the mouth; this is why it is essential to chew food properly. Chewing food correctly allows enough saliva to be produced allowing the breakdown of the starches that are contained within the food. Next, the food will move into the oesophagus before travelling to the stomach. Once the food is released into the stomach, the food is mixed with digestive juic-es and it is then passed into the intestines. Finally, the pancreas and liver play an important part in completing the digestive process; the pancreas produces pancreatic juices that help the body to break-down starches, fats and proteins and then the liver produces bile to assist in the breakdown of fats.

Problems with the digestive system Due to the complexity of the digestive system, it is not uncommon for people to develop problems such as constipation, indigestion, Irritable Bowel Syndrome or acid reflux etc. All of these problems can be painful and distressing but there are many things that people can do in order to help improve their digestive system. The following tips can help:

Drinking water can assist in relieving some digestive difficulties; it can help to prevent constipation and ease the digestion of food.

Increasing fibre is another way to help achieve a healthier digestive system and it also plays an important role in the prevention of diseases like dia-betes and some cancers. According to NHS guidelines, adults should be eating around 30g of fibre every day, however, many people do not do this.

Chew food properly and try not to eat when you are rushed or stressed.

Supplements such as probiotics and digestive enzymes can be useful for some people, however, if you are on medication or have a medical con-dition, then seek advice from your doctor first.

Stress can have a negative impact on our digestive system - find ways to reduce stress naturally such as adopting an exercise program or learn-ing meditation. In addition, massage is an effective way of reducing stress; it can also help to soothe aches and pains and ease tight mus-cles. EVERYBODY’S GOT A BOOK IN THEM

We’ve printed books on local history, novels, illustrated children’s books, guides, and even personal books perfect for recording family stories for future generations.

With modern printing methods we can print and produce as few or as many as you would like. We offer advice on how to prepare your book for print or we can design your book for you. We also offer advice on paper, the best binding technique and even marketing your book.

But before we print anything we talk, so if you have a story to tell call David Pealing on 01452 416391 or email [email protected] and let’s make your book a reality.

@severnprintwww.severnprint.co.uk 01452 416391

We all have stories to tell, the pity is that so many go unheard.
